seraphina and her older sister evangeline shuffled awkwardly as they carried their large trunks through the aisle of the train. seraphina’s eyes wandered as they walked by different compartments, catching snippets of conversations as she passed. some slytherin girl was bragging about the broomstick her parents got her for her birthday, two girls talked dreadingly about owl exams coming up at the end of the year, and one younger boy, unconvincingly, was insisting to others in the car that he wasn’t nervous at all about being sorted later that evening.
seraphina smiled softly as she took it all in, her eavesdropping coming to a halt when evangeline stopped to open the door of a compartment to her right. eager eyes on unfamiliar faces lit up as evangeline walked in, the students inside greeting her with excitement. this moment of reunion bloomed as hugs, “i’ve missed you”'s and “how was your summer?”'s were exchanged. though, the buzz came to a halt when a couple of evangeline’s friend’s eyes laid on seraphina, glowing with a slight curiosity. she did her best to smile in a way least awkward as possible.
as evangeline pulled away from hugging one of her friends, she introduced her. “guys! this is my younger sister seraphina. she’s a first year this year,” she said, prompting a couple of awws from her friends before she went around briefly introducing each of them in turn. seraphina, evangeline, and her friends all chatted briefly before seraphina felt herself pulled toward leaving. she knew she needed, and also wanted, to go meet people of her own outside of her sister, especially fellow first years. she politely excused herself, waving goodbyes to evangeline’s friends and catching her sister’s eye as she opened the compartment door. evangeline shot her look, non-verbally asking if she’ll be okay. though feeling a little uncertain, seraphina answered with an assertive nod and turned into the aisle. “hope to see you in ravenclaw!” a voice hollered from her sister’s compartment as the door closed behind her.
now on her own, seraphina strolled down the aisle, continuing to observe the surrounding compartments. some spilled over with laughter and someone’s owl relentlessly hooting, while others were nothing but quiet murmurs. she saw older students reuniting with friends and new ones sitting quietly, looking uneasy, kind of like she felt. as she walked further from her sister's compartment, her longing to go back grew. she knew that not clinging to her sister and branching out was good for her, but it was undoubtedly out of her comfort zone. her eyes glanced around the various compartments, the thought of opening each one giving her different kinds of hesitance.
that was until the door a few compartments down slid open. a young girl with dark skin and radiant green eyes peaked her head out of the door frame, smiling to seraphina kindly, almost as if she felt seraphina’s uncertainty. seraphina smiled back, to which the girl said, “hey, looking for a spot?”
a weight off her shoulders and a light in her spirits, seraphina nodded enthusiastically and followed the girl into the compartment.₊˚⊹⋆

Adora stood on the platform with her parents, wishing them good-bye. Her mother kept checking to see if she had all of her things, despite the fact that they had double checked together. "I have everything Momma, I'll be okay. I promise I will write more this year," Adora said, giving her mother one last squeeze. Her dad hauled her trunk onto the Hogwarts Express after she had already climbed aboard. She pulled it onto the train, then lugged it behind her as she tried to find a good spot. A lot of kids had already found their compartments and were sitting with their friends, catching up on things that happened over the summer. It reminded Adora of the friends she had made in her first year. She missed them, of course, but she had not seen any of them on the platform, or in any of the compartments. She looked out the window of the train, and scanned what she could see of the platform for someone she knew or recognized, but nobody seemed familiar. She turned to continue her search for the perfect compartment when she saw an empty one just three door down from where she currently was. She marched toward it and opened the door, lugging her heavy trunk behind her. She didn't shut the compartment door, just to let anyone who was looking for a spot know, "Hey, you can sit with me!" She picked up her trunk and slid it into the overhead as gently as she could. She pulled her new book out of her satchel and sat down in the corner, opening it to read. It was a book her Grammie had brought her from Ireland. It was titled "How to Speak Irish" her grandmother didn't speak much English, so it was incredibly difficult for Adora to communicate with her, because she barely knew any Irish. It wasn't long before someone approached her compartment. She looked up from her book at this new person. “Hey, looking for a spot? This one's open” Adora smiled at the girl, who looked very out of place. She had long, dark hair and dark brown eyes. She was pretty. She nodded, and Adora added: "Come on in!" patting the spot next to her.
