Nightroot Elixir: The Conference
It’s been a while since the Potions Master was actively involved in the world of healthcare. A year ago, he was still working as a Nurse in Tenusa before dedicating himself fully to teaching at Hogwarts. Now, with an enchanted suitcase in his left hand, Nibbles and a similar but smaller carnivorous plant in the hug of his right hand, the man stepped inside the building of St Mungo's Hospital for Magical Maladies and Injuries.Note: This thread is open for characters who have become adults before June 2026, especially those who are taking a career path in Healing, Potion-related, or Herbology-related. I don't moderate this, but feel free to shoot me an owl if you plan to have interaction with my character.
Date: Late June 2026
In the Ground Floor, Lesmana walked towards the reception. There, he met the Welcome Witch. She asked his name, made a confirmation, and brought him to the First Floor. The Floor was known to treat creature-induced injuries. He was further brought to a hall, which was already filled with some wizards and witches. All came with the same purpose.
The man was then directed to the front of the hall. There, already set a projector, a projection screen, a microphone, and a table. Lesmana put Nibbles and the smaller plant on that table and prepared his presentation material. Nibbles moved its petioles, as if it showed curiosity. Perhaps it was indeed showing curiosity, like the people who have filled the hall.
As the clock hands moved onward, the Potions Master could feel his heartbeat growing louder with every second. His ears suddenly felt nothingness. Everything seemed silent and still until the moderator tapped his shoulder. He regained his full consciousness immediately. He gave the moderator a nod before the conference started.
A brief feedback squeal echoed through the hall, silencing the murmurs slowly. The moderator gave an apologetic gaze to the crowd before opening, "Good afternoon, distinguished guests, Healers, researchers, and colleagues. We are deeply honoured by the presence of so many respected figures in the field of magical medicine this afternoon. Today’s conference marks an important milestone in preventative lycanthropic medicine. As we all know, lycanthropy treatment has always been a difficult field to navigate. We have worked hard every day to ensure the continued well-being of witches and wizards, both those afflicted and those yet untouched by the curse."
She stopped for some moments, his eyes scanned the attendants. "Right on the podium was Professor Lesmana Asmaralaya, a Potions Master from Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. He will present the new invention on the Lycanthropy prevention that he recently found. Without further delay, let us begin." She looked at the presenter and said, "The floor is yours, Professor."
With the cue, Lesmana brought himself closer to the microphone at the podium. "Thank you." Lesmana adjusted the microphone briefly before continuing. He took a quiet breath before speaking once more. "Healing has long been central to my practice. Before serving in Tenusa as a nurse and later teaching at Hogwarts, I spent years at Omah Geni apprenticing in potion research, specialising in healing and restorative care. And today, I am going to present the new findings on Lycanthropy preventative treatment." The projector turned on, showing big letters on the screen.
"For centuries, lycanthropy has been one of the main problems in magical medicine. Every month, we still have high incidents recorded in the United Kingdom for lycanthropy infection. This surely became our concern, as the infection brought a curse that lowered the quality of life of those affected. The problem grew even bigger in communities where proper treatment could not be given, resulting in the massive spread of infection due to loss of consciousness."
The next slide displayed several statistical graphs related to the infection.
"Because of this, there has long been a need for an effective preventative measure. Numerous studies have been conducted over the years, and today, I am proud to present one of them before you, the Nightroot Elixir."
"This elixir was formulated as a preventative measure for individuals exposed to lycanthropic contamination. Its purpose is not to cure the curse, but to stop the progression during the earliest stages of infection by eradicating the magical contagion carried through bites or scratches. It also stabilises the victim’s condition, preventing transformation during the next full moon. If successful, the individual remains fully human, with no lingering curse."
With the help of the staff, bundles of paper were distributed to the attendants. The rustling sound of papers filled the venue for a moment. On them, they could see the procedure of the brewing process and the result in statistical graphs. The screen also showed similar content.
"As you can see, the main ingredients and the procedure are really similar to the Wolfsbane Potion. You might notice the very short duration of the brewing process and an ingredient you aren't familiar with in the potion, perhaps in any potion. Yes, the digestive juice of Dionaea aconitum." Another murmur filled the venue
"Dionaea aconitum is a carnivorous plant that grows only in environments rich in Aconite extracts, having resulted from a mutation of Dionaea magitum after prolonged exposure to such conditions. The mutation is already confirmed by the United Kingdom Herbology Research Council. The recent finding showed that the digestive juice of Dianaea magitum can eradicate some pathogens. However, the substance to fight the Lycanthropy contagion hasn't been found yet. And since Aconite is famously known, combining with the recent research findings, I started the experiment with this base. What's difficult is to formulate the amount of Aconite extract for the soil. It also depends on the amount of sunlight, water quality, and humidity. The wrong calculation resulted in cultivation failure. The first month, specifically, is the critical period."
"To extract the juice, we need to feed the plant first. Luckily, the diet is the same as Dianaea magitum. Feeding the plant would stimulate the production of digestive juice. We need to open the trap to extract the juice, and this part is also difficult. Too much pressure could stress the plant. An accidental cut can reduce the effectiveness of the juice. The juice also rapidly loses its potency after ninety minutes of open-air exposure. Very tricky, indeed."
Another murmur could be heard. Nibbles moved its petioles around while the other plant seemed in a sleeping state.
"The next thing you might find different from the Wolfsbane Potion procedure is the use of Aconite. In Wolfsbane Potion, we don't use the root and need to dry the plant, while in Nightroot Elixir, we use them all. We chop the plant finely."
The slide changed to another statistical graph.
"Nightroot Elixir has passed the Clinical Trial with the help of St Mungo's Hospital for Magical Maladies and Injuries. As you can see here, the experiment showed a high success rate with some manageable adverse effects. Most of them rarely seen in the subjects. Peer Review has been conducted, and approval from St. Mungo’s Research Council has been gained."
"This potion is administered topically over the wounds. All wounds, without exception. The goal is to fight the contagion, as we know that the port of entry of it is through non-intact skin. So we must make sure we screen the patient thoroughly before administering the potion."
"The main limitation of this potion, besides the difficult cultivation of the plant, is the short shelf-life. The potion would rapidly degrade after preparation. The golden period to administer this potion is also only two hours post-injury. Longer than this period wouldn't stop the infection."
The slide changed again to a moving picture of the elixir being poured over the patients' wounds.
"That concludes my presentation. Though this may not yet be the end of Lycanthropy, we hope it may become the beginning of a safer future for those living in fear of the curse. Thank you for your attention. I will now be happy to answer any questions regarding the Nightroot Elixir and our findings."
The next were the questions from the attendants. Many were very interested in the cultivation, and some were more curious about the brewing process. Most of the people agreed that this potion was indeed very difficult to brew, but it also gave hope for future Lycanthropy treatment.
Once Lesmana stepped down from the podium, he was greeted by many hands. Some were still curious. The moderator approached him, "I know this girl. Nibbles, right?" Lesmana smiled and nodded. "You're still as cute as usual, Nibbles. And have you named the other guy?" she asked.
"Ah, I haven't told you yet. Since you knew, this guy is very picky," he chuckled. Lesmana showed the purple-skinned carnivorous plant. It moved its petioles now, as if he woke up after a long and boring conference. "Chompy. It will be Nibbles's friend from now."
