DENISSE DE VERA
𝕴t was considerably warmer in the courtyard than it was outside on the frigid day. Denisse gripped the broomstick and listened intently as Professor Weems detailed the upkeep of a broom, even explained it part by part so it wasn't so confusing-the handle, the seat, the grip, the brush, the bristles, the cap.

She carefully ran her hand over the handle of the school broom, feeling for any possible splinters. She felt small scratches in the wood of her broom but nothing sharp enough to snag her hand. Millie, standing next to her, was inspecting her broom, and Denisse’s gaze drifted to compare the brush, cap and the angle of the bristles.

Then the bedlam struck. A broom near the middle of the group suddenly jittered violently as its owner attempt to cut off a single bristle from its brush. The broom didn’t subside as it expected.

Instead, it bobbled into the air erratically, its sudden movement startling all of those around it, causing one broom to crash down and then hit a can of polish, splattering the wax onto the courtyard stones.

Two students, startled by the sliding can of wax, crashed into each other and into two more brooms, which also knocked into other brooms in a messy pile up.

Denisse clutched her broom tighter as her heart rate spiked. She thought her broom, for a brief, terrible second, would be a participant in the rebellion of brooms. Her broom jiggled in her hands as if it wanted to lift off without her even the slightest command.

She planted her feet firm into the ground and gripped the handle loosely just as they had been taught.

Her broom stabilized into a hover.

The sounds of screams and laughter filled the courtyard as everyone tried to retain their brooms’ loyalty. The tools lay strewn around on the stones. Sandpaper, a tool used to help clean brooms of debris, fell out of a bucket.

Brushes and broom’s bristles lay across the stones.

A nearby chalkboard had been toppled by a falling broom. Denisse remained in place, focused on her broom.

After the broom demonstration ended, the courtyard stones were littered with spills of polish and broken bristle shards. Denisse’s breath rushed from her lips and her pulse was still racing. She glanced over at Millie, who was pushing loose bristles back into the bristles of her broom’s brush. β€œAt least ours behaved,” Denisse told her with a relieved smile.

β€œAt least ours behaved.”

Gently moved her fingers around the bristles of her broom, Millie looked aside and nod to Denisse. Just that. Even without a smile or crooked grin pestered on her face. Her jaw tightened and the girl trying so hard to hide her trembling fingers within her tending act to the broom she held tight on her arms.

It is not her first time with flying class anymore but somehow Millie still have that horrifying feeling with her first experience to fly. With a magical broom, no less. Surely said, it's not because she afraid to fall from the sky. Well, yes, she's still afraid of that, but that's not the main point of it. She fall countless times when she played around her house. It's common day of hers. But fly, up to the air, that make part of her body feel ... odd. The contents inside her stomach risen with the lack of gravity while she going up and up, with only the grip of her broom she could depended her life onto.

Too preoccupied with her wildest thought, the brush in her grip fall to the ground. Landed just on the top of her shoe, making her winced but quickly crouched down to take the brush back. Ugh. This wouldn't do. She must focused to her unfinished task.

She intend to polish the grip next, but when she saw the poor can gliding on the ground, Millie clicked her tongue. Not that loud to snapped another attention with that troublesome students and their rebellious broom, as she crouched back and took the can of wax, now almost have nothing in it.

"I'll asked for another can to Professor," she said to Denisse, still mending her own broom with so much care, like it is a baby instead of an ordinary school broom. "The only good thing is the wax didn't splashed on my shoes."
