Lena had stepped into her house, after the long train ride. She missed her home more than anything. The smell of freshly bakes bread filled the air, it was one of Lena's favorite scents. Her mother had pulled into a tight hug. "Oh Lena, sweetheart, we've missed you so much!" Her mother said, tearing up slightly before letting go. Arthur stared at her with an upset expression. She immediately knew what this was about. "I've missed you guys too!" She hadn't told them she was Slytherin yet, though they've written about a million letters to each other.
Lena was never sure why her father hated Slytherins, but he always talked about it. Her father was smart, he was a Ravenclaw after all. He always talked about how he wanted her to follow in her footsteps. "Lena, darling." Lena refused to make eye contact with him, she knew it was disrespectful, but she couldn't stand to look him in the eyes in this very moment. She stared at the ground. "Look at me when I'm talking to you." His voice was cold and stern. Hearing his voice like that sent shivers down her spine "You've been avoiding a serious question. You haven't told me what house your in?" He said, his voice growing more harsh every moment that Lena ignored him.
Her mother could see the hurt in Lena's eyes. "Darling, why don't we talk about something else! How have you been liking Hogwarts so far?" She said, trying to change the subject. However, Lena just stared down at her shoes, shrugging slightly. "Don't ignore your mother." This was a voice that neither of them had heard very often. He rarely ever got this mad, though Lena was never this quiet around them. "It's been fine, I guess." She didn't look up, still had her luggage in her hand. She held on tightly to her leather journal, tracing the edge with her fingers.
"May I ask, why you hate Slytherins so much? I'm a Slytherin, do you hate me? Your own daughter?" She said, her eyes starting her tear up. She tightened her grip on her journal. "Damn it. I knew it. Is that why you avoided the question for so long?" He said, gritting his teeth. Obviously that's why I avoided it. I would've been happy to tell you if I was in literally any other house. She thought to herself, still staring down at the floor, pressing her tounge to the inside of her cheek. "Do you hate me?" She repeated herself, glancing up at him, a single tear dropping down her cheek. Her father scoffed, avoiding the question.
"Wow, okay." She stormed off to her room. She shut her door, sliding down against it. She against her door, pulling her knees to her chest, tears streaming down her face. Does he really hate me? How could he hate his own daughter? Is a house really that big of a deal? After a few moments, there was a knock on her door. "Lena, sweetheart, please may I come in" Her mom said softly. Lena was mad in that moment, she thought she was mad at the world, mad at everyone, but she was really just mad that she couldn't be enough for her dad. "Go away!" Lena snapped at her mom. She was usually not an angry person. Her mom stayed at the door for a moment longer. "Okay, I love you sweetheart."
I love you. Those three words replayed in her head. In that very moment, she didn't believe them. Though her mom hadn't done anything to her, she still felt resentment towards her. A million different thoughts raced through her head. Why am I never enough for them? Why am I so useless? You will never make them happy. You just have to accept that. You're unlovable. She hugged her knees, burying her face in them.
