The Girl In The Tower Closed

Sylvia climbed the spiral tower with heavy shoulders and a heavy heart. She didn't expect herself to feel so...defeated this early in her school life. She's been in Hogwarts for less than a week and she was already feeling homesick. Gone was her bubbling excitement, now replaced with the feeling of heavy doom and discontentment.

The sorting ceremony was not what she was expected and she still needed time to adjust to it all....adjust to everything really. Hogwarts was just too big for her taste. She was feeling overwhelmed by it all.

I guess it would make sense, I am a small town girl after all... Sylvia thought, shivering as she entered the draft, stone room where all the owls in Hogwarts were staying in. Back in her home in Cheshire, her family had a small pen for their owls and every week she would help her father clean it out. She always thought it smelled that bad, but now that she was in a room with over a hundred of these feathery mail creatures- she might reconsider.

The room emitted a rather displeasing smell. This was most likely a result of exorbitant amount of bird dropping on the everywhere. Even if the Owlery was cleaned regularly, Sylvia doubted the stench would disappear anytime soon.

Sylvia noticed the Owlery was not very populated. It made sense, they were in the middle of winter holidays and the room was dreadfully cold. Then again, that's not a bad thing. She probably would have hated it since there would be more people about.

"Ratcatcher!" She bellowed out, lifting her hand out. Ratcatcher was such a silly name to give an owl, but her grandmother insisted that they called him that. It was what he did best, after all.

The snowy white owl turned it's head at the sound of her voice and swooped down from it's tall perch and onto her gloved hand. Then bird gave her hair a little nip and proceeding to peck the side of her skull.

"Ow! Ow! Ratcatcher, stop that!" Sylvia cried out in pain as the owl began to flappy angrily. "I"m sorry I didn't visit you sooner! Geez, I come all this way to see you again and this is the thanks you give me?" Sylvia huffed as her owl finally began to calm down. "Good, I brought some treats for you. Do that again and you aren't getting any, you hear me?"

Ratcatcher's reply sounded awfully innocent for a creature that just attacked her a moment ago.

Regardless, the two climbed the twisting tower until they reached the final landing. There Sylvia found a tall window in the corner of the room- one that was easy miss. When she finally thought they were alone, she reached into her pocket and pulled a few treats to feed Ratcatcher.

"I promised Mother and Father that I was going to be a big girl and not cry...but I think I overestimated myself." She grumbled with trembling lips. She felt so foolish for feeling homesick. "Now there's nothing I want to do but go home and drink Mother's apple cider and get Father's hugs. Heck, I even miss Grandmother's terrible lies."

Sylvia bushes away the tears that were beginning to roll down her cheeks and frowned. Ratcatcher looked at her with his large beady eyes, as if asking her to speak more. At least, that what she thought.

Suddenly from behind her, she heard a soft ruffling. She jumped, causing Ratcatcher to ruffle his wings in surprise as well. Oh gosh, did someone catch her crying?

Savanna had crept quietly into the room where the owls were kept. She walked silently up the stairs to find Romeo. That was what she named the owl, after a character from her favorite Shakespeare play. She gently stroked the barn owl who ruffled its wings. She realized that there was another girl in the tower...

Romeo, by ruffling his wings, had attracted some unwanted attention. She looked at the girl and just barley caught a glimpse of her tear covered cheek. She pet Romeo one last time before sending him off with a letter to her adoptive parents. She brushed of her robes and walked over. "Are you alright?" she asked the crying girl. She had thought it was a hufflepuff who was crying, as they tended to be softies, but when she realized the girl was of the slythirin house, she backed away and shielded her face with her fore arm. "I am truly sorry to disturb you, please forgive me." she said as if she was speaking to royalty. " I did not at all mean to intrude." she said, ready for anything. She had had a bad experience with slytherin lately, and had no intentions of ending up with more gum in her hair.

Sylvia's face twisted into a frown. Her face growing hot with embarrassment. But as quickly as the shock and embarrassment hit her, it was quickly replaced by irritation. The girl acted as if she had just uncovered a venomous snake nest with its occupant still in it. And Sylvia hated that thought.

"What? Never seen a Slytherin cry?"
She hissed, gripping her robes with her free hand. Now that she thought about it, she hasn't seen one cry either...but that was beside the point.

"I'm not going to bite you, if that's what you're scared of." Sylvia sniffed, wiping her runny nose with her sleeve. "Ratcatcher might...but I already fed him some treats so he's pretty pacified right now."

Sylvia eyed the girls robes and noticed the blued accent that exposed the girls house color. A Ravenclaw. Oh great. Just the kind of person she wanted to find her. And by the way she was talking to her, Sylvia knew the girl was mocking her as well. She must look like a duff to someone so intelligent and brillant like a Ravenclaw. A crybaby Slytherin? By Merlin's hat, what an embarrassment. What if she goes and tells everyone about her? Then she'll be made fun of by Slytherin and Ravenclaw alike. How will she make friends then?

At her side, Ratcatcher leaned forward, his large beady eyes sizing up their guest with interest. Sylvia placed her palm on the back of his head to stop him to moving anymore. The bird was such an aggressive owl, completely different than the other ones around them. He must be catching on to her feelings. That was bad. This is not a situation to escalate. Sylvia's reputation was at stake. The last thing she wants is to be known for having an monster of a owl. She'll never make friends that way. "We aren't all cold blooded....I think." She said, bluntly. At least, I don't think I'm cold blooded.

Then she let out heavy sigh. Perhaps it would be better to drop the subject. If the girl's mind was occupied by other thoughts, then perhaps she'll forget about the little show Sylvia had performed before her.

"What are you doing here, anyway?"
She asked, with a shifty gaze. "The weather has been pretty bad lately so most people wouldn't dare to enter the Owlery without fearing that they'd loose a limb." It was actually the reason why she decided to visit Ratcatcher and send her letter today, when she was sure the Owlery would be empty. "Are you..sending letters to your family too?"

She was a bit frightened when the Slytherin girl grabbed her, but she did her best to keep calm and keep her wits about her. "I really am sorry. I don't know any Slytherin who would not be glad to send me to the hospital... guess I jumped to a conclusion too soon" She said in a clearly and earnestly sorry tone. "If you are afraid That I will ruin you rep, you are highly mistaken. We all have moments when we need to cry. Just because you wear a green robe with a snake on it, does not mean you don't have feelings. Just like because I wear blue and a raven on my robes does not make me a smart-alike snob." she replied before moving on to the next subject. "Yes... I am sending a letter to my loved ones in Scotland." Something usually only Ravenclaws would notice is that she did not call her adoptive parents her family. "I understand it is bad weather, but romeo is a strong bird and I have faith in him." She watched her sturdy bird fly of into the howling wind. She said a mental prayer in hopes that it might help Romeo arrive safely.

"R-reputation?" She whispered, internally panicking. Somehow that Ravenclaw girl had managed to expose her biggest fears without even blinding an eye. Damn her and brilliant brain of hers!

Going into code red, Syliva did the one only thing she could think of: Bluff.

"How b-bold of you to assume that I'd care for my reputation."
Sylvia turned her cheek away from the Ravenclaw girl, hoping she wouldn't see the panic in her eyes. This Ravenclaw girl has proven to be quiet the opponent. In a single sentence she had already disarmed Sylvia and placed herself on the high ground. Sylvia was at her mercy. Which was dreadful, absolutely dreadful. Even if the Ravenclaw girl promised to keep her lips sealed- to what end? Sylvia needed to secure the girl's silence.

"Regardless...."
She began, choosing her words carefully. "Your words hold some...merit. Even I find some people in my house kinda....intimidating. So I wont rang on you for assuming I'd be the same. My mother was a Ravenclaw, you know, and she was more eccentric than she was a snob. She's a potions maker- really good one at that. She always gotta have her nose stuck in a book, even when she's doing deliveries. " Sylvia paused for a moment, picturing her mother's face. It made her heart twist a little.

She crinkled her nose, trying to blink away the tears that where creeping along the corner of her eyes. Oh Merlin's moldy toe, it was just like her to get caught up in the moment! This is exactly what she was trying to cover up! Keep the conversation going! Keep it going!

She quickly tried to change her demeanor. "Y-your owl's name is Romeo? That's an awfully adorable name. Did your parents get you him?" She said, looking over the girl's shoulder. In the distance she could see the bird's small figure disappear into the snowy mountains. "It's much nicer than mine." She lifted up her snowy white owl, who cocked his head to the side. "He's name is Ratcatcher. It's such a ghastly name, isn't it? Not even remotely charming. I fear he won't do well with the ladies. "

Sylvia eyed the Ravenclaw girl carefully, wondering if the she'd take the bait. Perhaps if they talked long enough she'd find some dirt on her and secure her reputation-or find a way to have her pledge loyalty to her.

Savanna was very thankful in that moment that she had read about all the houses before going to Hogwarts. She never knew what house her family was traditionally from, but she wanted to be prepared. She took a moment to think over and remember all that she had read about slyterin and bit her lip as she always did when she thought. Qualities. Slytherins tend to be ambitious, shrewd, cunning, strong leaders, and achievement-oriented. They also have highly developed senses of self-preservation.This means that Slytherins tend to hesitate before acting, so as to weigh all possible outcomes before deciding exactly what should be done.

Slytherins tend to take charge and possess strong leadership skills. Slytherins are often self-assured and confident of their own competence and can be very loyal.

Another characteristic some Slytherins share is a tendency towards deep, unrequited love. The girl stuttered and took a moment before she spoke about her mother. This must mean, according to sources, that she thinks I threaten her, and she wants to ...... lets see ..... her eyes glint a certain way ..... yes ...... she is a little scared if I assume correctly. How can I assure her I am not threat ....... hmmm ......
* She thought hard, then worked up a solution.

Although she did kind of want to talk about Romeo, she felt there was a subject much more important in that moment. She, after recalling all she knew of slytherin, was prepared to speak once more.

"You are slytherin right? Well let me tell you something, I am a Ravenclaw. I would not shame my house and family by spreading rumors about you. As a Slytherin, it is almost guaranteed that you want to preserve your reputation. I am really sorry that you miss your family so much, or maybe there is a family crisis. Whatever it is, I hope it gets better. If it makes you feel better..." she paused breifly, wondering if she was actually about to tell a SLITHERIN this...."I am adopted and feel out of place. Both my adoptive guardians have black hair and black skin while I have red hair and pale skin. There is no shame in having secrets, having feelings... I just want to let you know you are not alone. There are other people who miss their family, or feel sad about certain family situations." she said as she chocked up again. she had just spoken about a situation she was most weak to. She decided showing the girl that others had problems might encourage her to feel less scared.

Sylvia stood still has the Ravenclaw girl spilled her guts before her...unprovoked! Dammit, she was foiled again! She was skeptical until girl began to choke up. Now she felt guilty.

This wasn’t a trick was it? At least...Sylvia didn’t think so.

Chin up,” She said, balancing Ratcatcher with one hand as she reached into her pocket and pulled out a handkerchief. “I don’t think blood really matters when it comes to family.” That’s awfully an un-syltherin thing to say. Though, Sylvia never thought herself as much of a Slytherin. “ So what if your parents aren’t your real parents? You still like them, right?” Sylvia crinkled her nose again, feeling a little shy. She didn’t really know how to approach the topic. The Ravenclaw girl did come all this way to send a letter to them, so should be safe to assume so. “Ratcatcher is a complete dolt but I think of him as family. Though, I guess it’s a bit of a werid comparison. Ratcatcher is an owl after all and your parents are human ...But if anyone gave you lip about having adopted parents, why I’d-“ Sylvia blushed, realizing she was shouting. She continued with a murmur. ”Certainly those who’s make fun of anyone for that is rubbish.”

Perhaps this girl wasn’t that bad after all.

Sylvia gulped, pressing her lips into a thin line. Perhaps she was wrong about this Ravenclaw girl.

“I realized I never gave you my name.” She said, hesitantly, kicking her feet like a child. “It’s Sylvia by the way....Sylvia Blackwood.”
The Girl In The Tower Closed
When Sylvia said blood does not matter, she was shocked, dumbfounded, frozen in her tracks. Did a slytherin student really just say that blood does not matter? She must not be a pure blood then...

Savanna was totally embarrassed. She, out of all things she could have forgotten, forgot to give her name. It may have seemed like no big deal to you and me, but to her, the world was ending. She slowly covered her face with her sleeve. "Please forgive my insolence and ignorance. My name is Savanna Waralor. I am incredibly sorry for not introducing myself prior to this." She mentally cursed herself. She hated to forget introductions. She wanted to go die in a damp and dark hole. She felt like such an idiot....

She snapped out of her shame trans, or at least thats what she calls them. "Anyway, all this to say, I promise I wont tel anyone you were crying. Plus, if I do, you can tell the school I am adopted, so now we are equal." She uncovered her face. Her hair had gotten a bit frizzy from the static in her sleeve. She had an idea to cheer Sylvia up.

she rubbed her hair swiftly and it puffed out like a lions main. She teasingly imitated a roar. She realized how stupid she looked but cared not.

Both Sylvia and Ratcatcher jumped at the sudden roar that came out of the Savanna. Sylvia stood still as stone as the new information was slowly being processed into her head. Did that Ravenclaw girl just....roar? As in roar like a lion? It's was bold and out-of-the-blue move that more fitting of a Gryffindor than a high strung Ravenclaw. Though, if there was any that she learned from this encounter is that not all members of a house were a like.

A burst of giggles erupted from the Sylvia's lips which was then followed by a string of heartfelt laught. This was too...bizarre! The burst of emotions she have been feeling for the past few minutes were becoming too much for her.

"Blimey, forget about being adopted, that act is more than enough to make a laughing stock out of you!" Sylvia giggled, wiping a stray tear from her eye. "Not that I'd actually do such a dreadful thing, even if you told everyone that I was a giant crybaby with a feral owl." She confessed. She didn't want to look like one of those girls to Savanna. She's been on the receiving side of bullying and it wasn't very pleasant. "By the way, I don't want you to misunderstand but I don't think there's anything wrong with being adopted. I think it's complete rubbish to rag on people for something they can't control. Honestly, it's one of the things I don't like about being in Slytherin. I know they ain't so uptight about it before, but I never like the whole deal with blood purity." She said. "I'm a half-blood you see, my father is a muggle- a writer in fact. He spent most of his time raising me with his muggle knowledge. My mother was always too busy for that and Grandmother- well, she flat out lies half the time, so you can never trust her. I actually didn't know anything about this bloodline business until I came here. It's all rubbish if you ask me. But it's a thing that makes it hard to connect with the other students in my house, considered how bloated Slytherin is with pure bloods and their ideologies ."
