Malakai Shibue | Hufflepuff | First Year
ᴀᴘᴘᴇᴀʀᴀɴᴄᴇ
Malakai’s fiery attitude is reflected in his appearance. He looks rough around the edges, but nevertheless lively. He might look like a street rat: his face and limbs are covered in scars and bruises from boxing and karate, which he has practiced since he was five. Or he might seem like an overly confident meathead, with his upright, chest-puffed-out stance and a crooked smirk that often lingers on his lips, one corner raised higher than the other. He does not mind being perceived this way; he wears his distinctiveness like a badge of honor and is unafraid to stand out.
His hair, once buzzed to the scalp, has now grown out into a shaggy, spiky cut. He used to bleach it, but now the dark roots of the past peek through the dye. He has defined cheekbones and a strong jaw that has survived many blows in boxing. His eyes are hooded and black, with upturned outer corners. They are often overshadowed by his dark, defined eyebrows, as he almost always narrows his eyes, letting his brows fall over them when he is trying to see or understand something – a habit of his. His nose is crooked, like much of his face, though not from boxing, but from a skateboarding accident. Needless to say, he has not skateboarded since. His face is dotted with small moles from bottom to top, like dark stars scattered across an olive-colored sky.
He is not particularly tall for his age, about medium height, standing at 5 feet 1 inch. His build is lean and slightly muscular from athletic activities he has done since childhood. His clothing choices are as bold as his demeanor. He likes oversized clothes that make him appear bigger. He wears many denim jackets, some embroidered with detailed images of sun faces, tigers, exotic flowers, and dragons. He mostly wears jeans or Adidas sweatpants. They are oversized, often passed down from his older brother, but if the ends are too long, they are always cuffed for easier movement. His shoes are colorful and chunky, but made from lighter materials to make running easier. Most of his clothes are torn at the hems and edges, but his parents have given up on buying him new ones since they get damaged, naturally, within a day or so of purchase.

ᴘᴇʀꜱᴏɴᴀʟɪᴛʏ
On the surface, or at first glance, Malakai appears to be a clown or a comic relief. He enjoys easygoing banter and pointless diversions from serious matters. He likes to crack jokes and does not seem to take himself too seriously. He is honest, and although he can be somewhat of an asshole, he dislikes people who think they are better than everyone else – a contradiction at its finest. He protects those who are weaker, partly because he likes to show off and partly because he genuinely cares. But, this facade is often just that, and there is more depth beneath his seemingly one-dimensional impression.
Malakai is impulsive, often getting into reckless behavior just to fill a void he does not realize exists within him. He enjoys going out, talking to people, and seeking adventures, but deep down he is searching for something to focus his mind on – something that can capture his attention and make him feel less empty, perhaps even stir a feeling in his chest. He does reckless things to feel alive, sometimes to bond with others, but in truth, it is a coping mechanism to escape a reality he deems boring.
Because of that hollow space inside him, which he cannot comprehend, he avoids getting deep or personal. He does not understand or even consciously recognize what that emptiness is or why it exists, and sharing a part of himself that others might understand better than he does feels not only too vulnerable but also a blow to his ego – someone being better at something than he is, in this case, understanding him.
He never commits. Life is a flowing river for Malakai: one day it encounters a dam and gets stuck, another day it flows freely, finding new paths and new waters. He likes to keep his life ever-changing, and committing to something means giving up that freedom, which his young spirit would rather not do.
Sometimes he enjoys causing outward chaos. When he is bored, he starts conflicts for fun. He enjoys debating and arguing. He is passionate about many topics. Despite how narrow-minded and foolish he might seem, he is genuinely interested in the world around him, and if a subject captures his attention, he immerses himself in it completely. However, it is incredibly frustrating to argue with him, as he always wants to be right and win the argument.
Malakai cannot be tamed or controlled. He does what he wants and what he believes is right. Anyone who tries to stop him is wasting their energy, because he lives on his own terms. Perhaps that is what draws him to boxing so much – when he steps into the ring, there are no rules, just a direct path to victory with his opponent standing between him and his goal. In the ring, the outcome depends solely on him, it is in his hands, and that is when things work out best for him.
When Malakai commits, he does so without limits. It takes an exceptional person to earn his trust, because with most people he is simply his silly and funny self – he does not truly open up to them. But when that special person breaks through, his trust is rarely broken. He is caring and protective toward those people, and he likes to show his love openly.

ʜɪꜱᴛᴏʀʏ
Malakai was born in the city of Kitakyushu, in Kyushu, Japan. He was the second child born in the Shibue family, his older brother being eight years older. The family lived in a small, modest apartment in the southern part of the city. It was a convenient location — his father was a blue-collar worker, and everything was easy to reach within their home, including his father’s workplace, his brother's school, and his kindergarten. His mother was English, she came to Japan to study art and, after graduating from university, moved to Kitakyushu, where she found a job in marketing.
Childhood in the city was uneventful, dull, but Malakai made sure to splash it with color. His brother was his biggest inspiration, he admired him and wished to emulate him. By the time Malakai started elementary school, his brother was already fifteen, and just as much of a troublemaker as Malakai would become. Malakai began karate solely because of his brother, though he later chose boxing for himself. He also tried skateboarding because of his brother, but that only resulted in a broken nose and a few days in hospital. Needless to say, that was the last time he’d tried it. His entire childhood he spent chasing the image of his brother, whom he saw as cool and edgy – the kind of person he wanted to be. His brother was intelligent too, so Malakai certainly had big shoes to fill. He studied, exercised, found his people, and made a name for himself in the area – a burning fire, always up to something, just as infamous as his older brother.
But when he turned nine, his parents decided to move back to his mother’s country – England. His brother stayed in Kyushu; he was in his last year of high school and had decided to study computer engineering at the city’s university. Leaving shattered Malakai’s whole world. He had carefully built a reputation and a life for himself in Kitakyushu, only for it to be torn away from him without a choice or say. It was decided: he was going to move, and there was no question or discussion.
Manchester wasn't that bad – better than he expected. But it could never compare to Kitakyushu. Here, he didn’t have his older brother, just himself, and it made him feel lonely. During the year he lived in Manchester before leaving for Hogwarts, he learned something that shaped him forever: he stopped committing. If he got attached, it could be torn away from him just as easily as his home and friends had been, even by people he completely trusted – his parents. Manchester was fine, he found friends and a place for himself, and was as menacing as he had been in Kitakyushu, but he believed it was all temporary. Maybe they’d move again, to another country, and it would all be ripped away once more. He couldn't risk getting attached if that might happen. So, contrary to his risk-seeking nature, he didn’t take a risk, and he didn’t commit. This was a passing chapter, he told himself.
Going to Hogwarts was a decision the boy made out of spite. Only a year had passed since they moved from Japan, and he still felt a bitter taste in his throat. He wanted to run away from his parents, he wanted to show them – because he never got to put it into words – how much he despised their decision to move, how furious he was to be torn from his brother. Hogwarts was his way of speaking, a fury that burned inside him, and a trust in him that was forever altered.

The first time he performed magic was in Manchester, England, when he was ten years old. He was sent to detention at school for being late several days in a row. Sitting in the classroom, profoundly bored, he stared at the blank sheet of paper on which he was supposed to write an essay. His mind was empty, his chin resting on his palm as he gazed absentmindedly out of the window. It was raining outside, and he would have much preferred to be out there than in the smelly old classroom.
To everyone's surprise, it suddenly began to rain from the ceiling. This was both unseen and unheard of. The building was single-storey, so there couldn’t have been a leak from above, and the ceiling was certainly intact. Then, why was it raining as if the ceiling were open to the sky? The students and teacher quickly evacuated, and the police were called. However, by the time they arrived, ten minutes later, the rain had stopped and the classroom was clear. The children were allowed to go home. Malakai was as confused as everyone else. He had no idea it was his doing.
