early birthday celebration

Even though it was still August the Littoreus family prepared to go out to celebrate their oldest daughter’s twelfth birthday. Mary’s birthday wasn’t until September 9th, but since after she left for Hogwarts the family would only see each other on Christmas, they decided to celebrate before. It just so happened that they were visiting Diagon Alley to shop for Mary’s school supplies, and to reach the Hogwarts Express on September 1st easier. So, they went to about the only place close enough to the Leaky Cauldron, where they were staying, fit to celebrate a birthday — Florian Fortescue’s Ice Cream Parlor. Say that ten times fast, am I right?
The family exited the Leaky Cauldron way past twelve pm, the kids liked to sleep in, especially when they were in a bustling city, with nothing to do, but chase cats in the inn’s hallways or play hide and seek in the pub downstairs. It was a much blander atmosphere than back at home, where there were always things to do, stuff to work out, and new adventures to encounter. Stopping to think about it, Mary was going to miss the Littoreus coast a hell of a lot.
But here they were, half one o’clock, strolling down the Main Street of Diagon Alley, a family of seven, that stood out in the crowd, for the kids ran around energetically, and they wore quite strange clothes, reminiscent of muggle clothes, that were simply more efficient than wizard cloaks.
The family reached and entered the Ice Cream Parlor. It being midday and slightly windy, there weren’t many people sitting here enjoying ice cream, and the bunch each chose flavors with ease. Strawberry and vanilla in a cup for Alicia, chocolate in a waffle for Matthew, turmeric and lemon in a waffle for Mary, candy floss in a waffle for Will, cookies and cream in a waffle for Lottie, strawberry in a cup for Vi, and finally a scoop of vanilla in a cup for Dom. Everyone went outside to eat, and pulled over some chairs to a round table. The vibrant yellow exterior of the shop brightened up the otherwise grey and cloudy day. The family raised ice cream and clinked them together in Mary’s name.
Later when they came back to their rooms in the Leaky Cauldron, Mary was gifted a handwritten letter from her mother, that stated she wished Mary to follow her dreams, and whatever she did to always be herself in the upcoming years of her life. That, along with a bouquet of flowers from her father, that were jinxed to stay alive and smell good for years, but Mary said she certainly was not taking a bouquet of flowers to keep with her at school. And anyway, that would make a terrible first impression on her peers.
Her early birthday celebration ended with a Floo Powder call to her close friend — a witch librarian, from a town near the family’s residence back in Scotland, whom Mary valued greatly, and gaped in all the advice that the woman gave to her in the time of communication through fire.
