Location: Main Street, a small magical village near his family's home
Winter break had officially begun.
Which meant Caspian Whitlock was free.
The eleven-year-old strolled down the snow-covered street with his hands shoved into the pockets of his coat. His birthday was coming soon. Many pureblood families would be coming over but this time he didn't really felt happy.
Maybe because in Ilvermony he saw people having friends and how different they were from his 'friends'.
The village was crowded with witches and wizards preparing for Christmas.
Caspian wasn't shopping. That would've required having a plan. Instead, he was wandering.
His pale eyes scanned the busy street, occasionally recognizing old pureblood family names on shop signs and advertisements.
Home was certainly different from school. Better, in some ways.
People actually knew who the Whitlocks were around here.
As they should.
A smirk tugged at his lips.
His attention had been focused entirely on something in a shop when he walked directly into somebody.
"Woah!"
The collision nearly sent both of them sprawling into the snow.
Instinctively, Caspian shot a hand out, catching the girl by the waist before she could hit the ground.
For a second, everything froze. Then Caspian blinked.
Looked at her. Looked at the position they'd ended up in. And grinned.
"Well,"
His grey eyes sparkled with amusement.
"Hello to you too."
Still holding onto her, he tilted his head.
"Though I have to admit, dramatically throwing yourself into my arms is a pretty memorable introduction."
He stepped back holding her hand and gently kissing the back of it;
"Caspian Whitlock and you might be?"
A smirk tugged at the corner of his mouth.

The punch landed.
Hard.
Caspian doubled over slightly, one hand immediately clutching his stomach.
Then he straightened his posture as though nothing had happened at all.
Years of etiquette lessons had taught him many things.
One of them was never letting people see when they'd actually managed to hurt you.
His grey eyes settled on her calmly.
A small smile remained fixed on his face.
"Charming."
The word was delivered with effortless politeness.
"Most people settle for a handshake."
"'Half angelic, half demonic' seems a bit generous after assaulting a complete stranger."
His gaze lingered on her.
And then the amusement faded.
Because now that he was actually looking, he noticed things.
The blood on her hands.
The cut on her forehead.
The way she had winced when he'd caught her waist.
The tears she seemed determined not to let fall.
Most people would've asked if she was alright.
Caspian wasn't most people.
Nor had he ever been taught how to ask questions like that.
Instead, he tilted his head.
"Tell me, Anderson."
His voice was lighter than his eyes.
"Do you normally wander into people and punch them?"
There was a teasing edge to his words, but not a cruel one. The sort designed to distract rather than mock.
For a second he considered leaving.
A sensible decision. A Whitlock decision. Instead, he sighed dramatically.
He reached into his coat pocket and produced a pristine white handkerchief embroidered with a silver W.
Holding it out toward her, he raised an eyebrow.
"For the blood."
His expression shifted back into something dangerously close to a smirk.
"Try not to punch me with this hand as well. I am beginning to take it personally."

The outburst earned nothing more than a blink from Caspian.
His expression remained perfectly composed despite the fact that she had just declared her hatred loudly enough for half the village to hear.
"That's unfortunate." He folded his arms.
"I was only beginning to enjoy our conversation."
The death stare she sent him would've probably scared a sensible person.
Caspian wasn't a sensible person.
"If I leave, who exactly are you planning to yell at next?" he asked mildly. "The railing?"
His eyes flicked toward the tear that finally escaped.
And for the first time since they'd collided, he stopped smiling.
Then came the apology. Followed immediately by a threat. Caspian stared at her for a moment before letting out a short laugh.
"Remarkable."
When she handed the handkerchief back, he didn't take it.
Instead he simply looked at it, then at her.
"Keep it. I wasn't asking."
His tone left very little room for argument.
He focused at her and gathered this much that she had tried to protect the cat in her arms from something. It didnt look like she tripped or anything. Oh how he hated helping others and then getting hurt himself. He would know, he grew a heart once to do the same and now he pays the price every single full moon.
Then, unexpectedly, he looked away.
"I knew someone once who got hurt doing something stupid."
The words left his mouth before he could stop them.
"They thought they were helping." His voice remained light, but there was something underneath it now. "They paid for it afterwards."
Caspian's fingers tightened briefly against the railing.
Not enough for most people to notice. Enough for him. His grey eyes returned to Briar. "So tell me."
The familiar smirk finally returned, though it was smaller than before.
"Was it at least worth it?" His gaze flicked downward. "Whatever it was that earned you the injuries."
