| xxxx | It was odd to explain how she found herself in a place like Magical Menagerie, a pet shop in midway down Diagon Alley that seemed favored among students. “What are we doing here, aunty?” Right… After Skylar finished buying books for the coming second year at Flourish and Blotts, her aunt was supposed to take her home, but somehow the cheerful woman dropped by the pet shop with enthusiastic curious smile on her face, looking incredibly astonished to be surrounded by animals. Skylar's reaction was not far from her favorite relative. While she stood in the center, she could not stop eyeing everything around her. Too many cages. Also. Too much noise. Cages were enchanted, obviously, stacked up on the ground, and also hung from the ceiling. She was not sure where to focus first. Owls, cats, and kneazles looked adorable, though always wearing an unbothered expression whenever someone approached them. Still… her question needed some answer anyway. As far as she knew, the girl already had a toad at home. No. Not just one, but more than five. She took care of them every day, as well as she took care of her plants, so why would she need more to disturb this peaceful ecosystem? “Because looking doesn’t cost anything,” her aunt replied immediately with a helpless giggle. That explained everything. “That sounds exactly like something people say before buying something.” She chuckled back. Her aunt only laughed and continued wandering deeper into the shop. Wonderful. Now Skylar had to follow before the woman accidentally adopted an entire zoo, and broke the old manor down. “Don’t you think we should celebrate that you're finally coming up to the second year at Hogwarts?” Amelia asked. Skylar knew what her aunt was trying to say. “We could celebrate at home? …with a full tray of pumpkin pie.” It was not that she had no urge to buy any, but she did not know what its purpose was when she already had something to look after. Suddenly, something light touched her hand as she stood near the cage. “Merlin’s beard.” Her aunt gasped beside her. “You could’ve just said hello.” The woman tried to lift it up with adoration, but the creature stubbornly clung to the girl, reaching its legs out as much as possible as it could. Skylar wanted to surprise herself, so she immediately closed her eyes. “W… Wait. Don’t tell me, aunty. Let me guess.” Her aunt giggled again, then she nodded along. “It feels soft. Is it a mouse?” The laughter came out of her aunt with dramatic amusement. The girl felt so unbearable to wait any longer, so she opened her eyes. “A spider? When did they have hair?” Her aunt could not stop laughing at her. “Seems like you have been claimed by the European Hairy Trapper, my dear. What do you think?” Two eyes peered at the spider in awe. She drifted in her thoughts. It was covered in thick, fluffy fur the color of freshly baked cookies. Shades of warm caramel, toasted brown, softening what would otherwise have been a rather terrifying appearance with the size of a baseball. Its eyes were dark, but so bright, looking as curious as the girl’s eyes. She found it adorable. “I think I like it.” Her aunt seemed satisfied with her answer. “Should we give it a name?” She paused. “Umm… I’ll call it… Muffin then!” Amelia chuckled. “Perfect. So, what are we waiting for?” Skylar paused again. “Wait… we’re buying it now?” Without any plan, her aunt just bought a new pet for Skylar that day, and the girl swore she would bring it to Hogwarts next year. | xxxx |
