2025/26, Stage 3 Spectator Day 1

The weekend of the final duelling stage of the season carried a special sort of energy. All the usual energy still existed as a base layer: the nerves, the excitement, the summoned heat and light and sound of numerous explosive spells (earplugs recommended). But on top of that was the once-a-year addition of finality, for the championship and for their seventh years. The duelling room was more crowded than usual--if you were going to spectate only one of the duelling stages, this was the one--and the weather had not yet fully committed to summer, so all there was to miss out on was a stubborn overcast and occasional drizzle.

The title of Duelling Champions, with all its glory and bragging rights, was just eight matches away from being decided. Less, technically, but those details can be left to the mathematicians. Gryffindor had taken the championship last year; this year it was still anyone's game, with Ravenclaw just a narrow two points in the lead and Hufflepuff only another two down.

For may of the duellists, there was always next year if not this one, more chances to win and improve and be with their teammates. For the seventh years, this weekend was the last stop. Today was a slightly lighter showing, with only three soon-to-be graduates: one from Ravenclaw, two from Slytherin.

@Cassius Eden, powerful and poised, had been a duelling captain for a time. Though not in a leadership position anymore, the Murder of Merlin looked up to him, the only seventh year finishing out the season, and no doubt had tried to replicate the sharp precision and lasting sting of his spells.

@Hanako Tone had a bit of a reputation on the duelling piste for... distraction tactics. Or perhaps the flirting was entirely sincere. He had once even duelled in a hot pink feather boa in the off-season. Though plagued by casting difficulties in the pressure of a duel, Hanako's spells were strong and fast as a whip when they succeeded. As for @Jack Burnett, his time on the Viridian Vipers may have been relatively short, but the ease with which he commanded his magic was obvious. Given time to build up more stamina, he'd be a truly terrifying opponent, and he likely already was in any game of wit.

This would be their last chance to make an impression on the Hogwarts duelling stage. That might feel like pressure, or not; there was a lot more to life than Hogwarts duelling. Whatever happened today would be forgotten in a few years' time. But it wouldn't be forgotten today, tomorrow, or next week, underlined by all the energy radiating throughout the room, making the candles seem to pulse slightly brighter. May the best team win!
