Double Potions with the Hufflepuffs.
Jay stared at their schedule. He had been looking forward to potions class and couldn't wait for the first lesson. As far back as they could remember, they had always been fascinated by potions and the way they had come together. He exhaled slowly, gathering his thoughts then headed down to the dungeons.
As he entered the classroom, every fiber in his body, tingling with excitement, he couldn't help but notice a bit of movement from a giant clay vase near the door to, what they assumed, would be the professor's office. Jay tentatively stepped a little closer, while still maintaining a reasonable distance. They noticed the word 'Nibbles' on the vase and then looked up to see a greenish-yellow plant with long stems, white petaled flowers, and little traps.
Apprehensive of the traps, Jay quickly moved to an empty desk near the front of the room and fixed their gaze on the professor. He had short black hair, fair skin, dark brown eyes, and was fairly tall. While he seemed strict, Jay didn't feel intimidated by him in the slightest. From Jay's knowledge, his name was Professor Lesmana but he didn't know much about the professor. Jay hoped that he would take a liking to them and that he might be willing to mentor them in the future.
As the time ticked by and the start of the lesson moved closer, Jay felt his stomach turn slightly. Most of the other tables were occupied by pairs who had chosen to be partners. There were combinations of Slytherins and Hufflepuffs and pairs that stayed within their houses. Some students, like Elsbeth, smirked confidently with their partner while others, like Athena, looked more unsure.
Will I even have a partner?
The chord of doubt struck Jay through the heart and they tried to brush the thought away, even as it still lingered in some shadowy corner of their mind.

First Potions Lesson
Luna entered the potions classroom apprehensively. She looked around, clutching the strap of her messenger bag tightly as she took in the environment. Her gaze went across all of the tables full of Slytherins and Hufflepuffs. Each table had two cauldrons, one for each pair, at the four person table. Two of the walls were full of various potions ingredients. Vials and jars filled the shelves with different ingredients needed for most if not all of the potions they would learn how to brew during their time at Hogwarts.
As she looked around, she saw that most of the tables were already filling up, students pairing together for the lesson. Some looked happy with their pairings, others seemed more scared. While looking at the pairings, she saw that students were either pairing up with classmates from their house or the other house. Because of this, Luna wished to pair up with one of the Hufflepuffs, primarily because she knew them a little better than the Slytherins. But, as she looked around, she saw that all of the Hufflepuffs were already paired up.
Will I have a partner or will I be alone? she thought to herself, eyebrows knitting together.
Her eyes then fell on one of the tables with an empty seat. The seat was next to a Slytherin student. As she looked at them and took in their appearance, she thought They look friendly enough. She approached the table. "Excuse me, is this seat taken?" She asked, her voice soft and timid.

Jay jumped, startled by the sound of another voice. They quickly recovered and tried to settle their nerves, taking in the girl that had asked the question."Excuse me, is this seat taken?" She asked, her voice soft and timid.
"Oh, no," they replied, words rushing together. "It's just me. You can sit here."
He moved the chair a little so that the girl could get in. She was a Hufflepuff, Jay noted, and not particularly chatty, it seemed. But she also didn't seem very judgmental, so Jay hoped that the two of them could, at the very least, remain partners for the rest of the year.
A flame of hope sizzled inside of him, considering the possibility of making his first friend not in Slytherin. Sure, they had Athena but Athena had already paired up with another Slytherin, a boy whose name Jay couldn't remember.
Jay studied her. She had pale skin, blue eyes, and red hair and was a couple inches shorter than Jay. The next thing Jay noticed was the bag next to the girl. It was a brownish color and had a gorgeous strap. It looked similar to theirs except that theirs, which had been passed down through the oldest child on her father's side, was a darker shade of brown and more worn.
Jay believed that you could figure out a lot about a person from the accessories they carried and the clothes they wore. Since they were now at Hogwarts which had a uniform, the clothes idea was useless. So he looked closely at the bag for a few seconds, trying to decipher anything about its owner.
No scratches or marks. Jay inferred that the owner was rather organized and methodical. The bag was also bursting with books, leading Jay to guess that the girl, and now their Potions partner, was rather intelligent and studious.
Before his partner could catch him looking at the bag, Jay averted his eyes and turned to study the copious amounts of ingredients on the wall. After a brief moment of awkward silence, Jay finally cleared their throat and said: "I'm Jay. Jay Ophelia and a first year Slytherin. What's your name?"

First Potions Lesson
Luna smiled shyly and sat down next to the Slytherin. She placed her messenger bag beside her and began pulling out her notebook, potions textbook, quill, and ink.
She looked at the boy, taking in his dark brown eyes, golden brown skin, and wavy dark brown hair. She quickly looked away, not wanting to get caught staring. She turned her attention to the chalkboard at the front of the class and began titling one of the pages of her notebook with the day’s lesson.
“I’m Jay. Jay Ophelia and a first year Slytherin. What’s your name?” The boy beside her, Jay, said, introducing himself.
“I’m Luna Polaris. First year Hufflepuff.” Luna responded softly. She tried to come up with a question to ask her new Potions partner but her frazzled mind was making it difficult. Everything was still so very new to her and between the various magic classes, students, and professors as well as having to navigate the castle and the castle grounds, it was a lot to take in.
The castle was giant, especially for an eleven-year-old. It was very easy to get lost. Each professor had a different teaching style she would have to learn. And then there were the, what seems to be, endless amount of students all with their own personalities. Social interaction was already hard enough for her, this just made it ten times harder.
Before she had a chance to speak again, the Potions professor, Professor Lesmana began the first of many Potions lectures they would attend during their years at Hogwarts.
