History/Background Story:
Nigel was born in 2007 to his wizarding mother, Amelia Hopwood, and muggle father Thomas Chandler. From the start, Amelia has been mostly absent from his life, instead occupied with her work as an Auror-- and so while they got along well, Amelia would only even appear for meals once or twice a week. Instead, Nigel was mostly raised by his father. He went to Muggle schools, enjoying everything from science to language courses, and coming home to an electrically-powered house with conventional Muggle technology. When Thomas's work as an interpreter took up inconvenient sections of time and Amelia was unable to pick up the slack to take care of Nigel, his father's boyfriend Nathan would come over to help. Amelia doesn't know Nathan very well, though she is the one who introduced him to Thomas in the first place, but she does know about his relationship with Thomas and quite lovingly approves. She hardly has time to take care of herself, after all. She can hardly expect to fulfill everything her husband needs from her as well, and Nathan is a decent enough person as far as she's concerned even if he is a Squib.
In April of 2012, trouble reared its head between Nigel's parents. Thomas was stressed and exhausted from his full day of work, having just picked Nigel up from school, and he came home to find Amelia passed out and bloody in the bathtub. He called for help from Nathan-- he could hardly call the police, not when he had no idea what happened and Amelia was a witch, but he didn't know how to contact St. Mungo's-- and the Squib managed to pull in a friend to fix Amelia up, but the damage was done. Thomas was afraid. He begged Amelia to take a break from her job. She refused. He asked that she at least try and pull back a little, in the hopes that she would actually be around to watch Nigel grow up, and after long discussion Amelia finally relented. She would not stop, but she would at least make an attempt to have a little more free time and a little less danger in her life. For about a year or so, this worked. Amelia showed up for dinner, and spent some time with her kid, and got horribly injured rathe less often. But as time went by, she once again grew more and more absent.
Until 2015. Nigel started getting into trouble in school, for anything from picking fights with the other kids to correcting teachers a little too much. He refused to explain why-- except that they're wrong, Daddy, they know they're wrong and they're still saying it! How can you even stand all these people being wrong all the time? Thomas had no idea what got Nigel so upset about the whole affair. He managed to talk to Amelia about it, one day when she was actually home, though, and his wife seemed to get a marginally better grip on Nigel's psyche. She taught him to keep quiet. He could always prove everyone else wrong later, but only if he gained their respect first, and that wouldn't happen if he kept shoving his thoughts (or his fists) in their faces before then. From then on, Nigel learned to smile. This didn't stop him from thinking other thoughts underneath, but if he smiled? People would assume that he meant well.
