Madeline's mother was a pure-blood witch, while her father was Muggle-born. They are practically ambitious.
Madeline was born and raised in London, though Muggles often found her strange to talk to. They said she invented absurd creatures, such as counting colorful sheep to help her sleep, which they dismissed as merely dyed sheep. She also talked to the dust bunnies under her bed, ate raw sugar or powdered chocolate straight from the jar, used smoke as perfume, and stared at the ceiling as though it were the most beautiful thing in the world.
Madeline was full of social experiments when she was a child. She discovered that she could test her mother’s patience by deliberately giving wrong answers while learning to count, and she did the same with the alphabet. Her parents were always busy with work, so they hired both a babysitter and a homeschool teacher for her.
Madeline was homeschooled throughout her childhood. Even her teacher and babysitter found her strange because she would suddenly talk about dancing blue rats or whatever eccentricities she happened to invent.
Blue rats were her specialty, and she claimed to feed them blue cheese under her bed. She said they were also friends with the dust bunnies. She even kept cockroaches in a jar and fed them cockroach clusters, but eventually found them uninteresting, so she buried the jar in the backyard while the cockroach was still alive.
Although Mr. Louis was simply a normal stuffed polar bear and never spoke, Madeline often claimed to know what he was saying or commenting on. She would also place Mr. Louis in the refrigerator every summer because he liked it, or bury him under piles of snow during winter. Her parents dismissed all of this as nothing more than a child’s imagination.

She found Madeline still perched on the branch, watching the burning tree as though it were a piece of art in a museum. Horrified, the babysitter quickly pulled Madeline down from the tree and called the firefighters.
