Talking to home
Lilly wasn’t used to writing letters, and she wasn’t sure where to start, but after two hours sitting in the owlery looking out the window, she had managed to write one to her parents. It was full of the usual stuff: she was sorted into Hufflepuff; the food was the best thing she had ever tasted; lessons were going okay so far and she hadn’t gotten too lost, only missed the first five minutes of potions! She sighed, looking out the window, clear, crisp air filling her lungs. Her head felt tired, yet there was a clearness that cut through.
She folded the letter in half, and put it in an envelope. Then pouring some hot wax over the envelope, she picked up her sealing stamp and pressed it on. She left it for a few minutes, watching as an owl flew from outside through the window, coming to land on a perch. It ruffled its feathers and chirped at her, its eyes a glowing yellow.
Once she was sure it was dry, Lilly took the stamp off the envelope, and assessed how well the wax had been imprinted. The overall detail was a little messy, with the righting of each house blurry, but if you were just glancing at in, it was okay. She watched the owls, debating which ones she would choose to deliver her mail. Deciding on a tawny owl, she coached it down with one of the treats she had in her bag. She pulled out some sting, tied it to the letter before attaching it to the owl’s foot. It chirped as the other had done, only this time it was a more subtle, almost soothing sound. It shifted its feet, preparing to take off on its long journey. “Have a safe flight, okay?” Lilly told the owl, stroking it head. It spread its wings, flapping them slightly before soaring down the countryside, slowly fading away until it became a moving dot in the distance.
