She had jumped with happiness and excitement when she saw the letter of acceptance from Hogwarts. And now she was shopping for school supplies. This made it feel more like reality, and less like a dream she might wake up from.
"First stop, Gringotts. The magnificent wizard bank run by goblins," said her Papa, gesturing at the large white marble building looming ahead of her.
Amalie had been to Diagon Alley plenty of times, but to Gringotts she had never.
"Goblins?" asked Amalie, for she had never seen one.
"Large scary creatures that will chop your hands off if you offend them or try to steal from them," said Adrian dramatically, giving her a silly grin. She just rolled her eyes, not falling for the bait.
"Adrian, don't frighten with that fake nonsense," chided Mama. "C'mon, you'll see."
Amalie took hold of Mama's outstretched hand and entered the building. The doors opened into a vast marble hall, echoing the sounds of coins clinking and murmured voices. Behind long counters, sat what Amalie assumed to be goblins. Contrary to Adrian's description, they were rather small creatures, with long noses and long, thin fingers.
They say to enter Gringotts is to feel small. And feel small did Amalie. The place had an overpowering atmosphere, that made her feel like she should cower. She read the sinister warning carved in stone near the entrance. Whatever she did, steal from Gringotts she would not even attempt. Not that she had been planning to do so.
Papa walked up to a counter and spoke with a goblin, gesturing towards Amalie at some point. The goblin nodded and handed over something to him. Papa came over to his family, "Right, to the vault we go."
Amalie knew their vault was #187 because she had asked outside. They got into a little cart on rails operated by a goblin and sped away to the heart of the bank. After some distance, the cart braked to a sudden halt, jerking all of them.
Papa got out, opened the vault, took out a pouch and handed it to Amalie. "You will use this to purchase your supplies and keep the remaining. It will be your allowance for the year for whatsoever you need."
Amalie nodded and thanked him, "Merci Thank you, Papa. I will spend it carefully"
After locking the vault shut, they sped away back towards the marble hall. After getting off, Papa thanked the goblin and returned the key. Amalie left Gringotts, clutching the money pouch tightly, and feeling awed and rather overwhelmed.
