Diagon Alley was busy, as it always was in the weeks leading up to the start of term at Hogwarts. Students and their parents bustle up and down the street, each laden with heavy books, cauldrons, robes, and other necessary supplies. Everywhere you look, there's noise, color, and some form of magic or other.

Katherine stood at the edge of the path with her mother. Her mother was referring to her school supply list and muttering to herself.
"We've got all the books it seems. Robes, yes. No broomstick, of course," she mumbles. She looks up. "It seems we just need your potions tools and, of course, your wand."

Katherine resisted the urge to sigh. Her parents own a potions shop. She's seen more vials, cauldrons, and scales to last a lifetime.

"Potage's, then?" she asks.

Her mother gives her a discerning look.

"You know, I have to get a few materials for the shop." Katherine, naturally, assumes this is a warning that her mother intends to prolong the visit and, in consequence, her torture. But before she can utter a complaint, her mother continues. "Why don't I grab your supplies while I'm there? You can get your wand in the meantime."

Katherine's eyes widen in delight.

"Really?" she asks.

"Yes. But I want you to meet me right here the moment you are done. No wandering off."

With an eager nod, Katherine scampered off, soon finding herself before Ollivanders.

The bell dings as she steps inside. The shop is dark, with rows and rows of boxes thousands of hues. She walks up to the counter and waits. Soon, a sales clerk approaches.

"Hello! Getting our first wand, are we?" she greets with a wide grin.

"Yes, ma'am. I'll be starting at Hogwarts soon."

"Splendid! Well, let's see what we have." she immediately disappears, returning with several boxes that she places on the counter. She picks up a lavender box and opens it to reveal a delicate, short looking wand, which she holds out to Katherine. "Cherry wood, unicorn hair core. 9 1/4 inches. Give it a wave."

Katherine holds the wand, unaccustomed to the grip, and gives it a wide flourish. Immediately, a loud cracking sound radiates through the shop and one of the shelves looks to be noticeably sagging. The clerk quickly removes the wand from her hand.

"Well, clearly that's not it." She returns the wand to its box, and instead pulls out a royal blue box and removes its wand, placing it in Katherine's hand. "Pine wood, dragon heartstring, 11 inches. Try that on for size."

Katherine gives another wave. This time, nothing happened but a few dismal sparks springing from the wand's tip. The clerk tuts.

"Oh, give me that. That won't do." She takes the wand. The next wand she brandishes is in a maroon box, covered in a thick layer of dust. "Here. Aspen wood, phoenix feather, 11 1/2 inches. I have a good feeling about this one."

Katherine take the wand in her hand and immediately notices this one feels different. It seems to radiate with energy, warming her palm. She gives it a swish and golden sparks burst out, warming the air around her. She turns to look at the clerk, a wide grin on her face.

"This is it," she says confidently. The clerk nods.

"That is the one. Let me wrap that for you." Despite Katherine's reluctance to let go of the wand, the clerk takes it from her hand and returns it to its box. "Aspen wood wands are fine things. Often found in accomplished dualists," she notes. She hands Katherine the box with a smile. "I'm sure you'll find takes you far."

Katherine takes the wand, knowing that it will.
