Echoes of a siren's call

The stars were already up and shining when Sabrina slipped out of the castle's gates. Her dress sparkling in the moonshine, she might've looked like one of the ghost residing within the magical school. But unlike them, she didn't glide with grace, but rather stumbled through the well-lit scene, proving that a year long experience of dancing in heels on waxed floors did nothing when attempting to walk in same shoes on uneven grounds.
Despite her struggles, the raven's mind was far from the difficulties of her walk, rather focusing on the ones that would come with it's destination: the autumn ball. She didn't plan on attending. Really, she had done everything in her power not to. Avoiding the topic, fleeing when anybody brought it up, making various plans for the night and not mentioning it in any owls she send to her family.. but one. And that one letter to her cousin was the fatal flap of butterfly wings that lead her to this fate. As a response to it, her cousin send a small box with a simple yet damning note:
I know you don't want to go, but you have to. Remember the promise you made and take this beauty for a spin. Kisses, yours forever,
Xoxo
Inside was a hand-made mermaid themed dress. Sabrina almost fainted when she first felt it's fabric between her fingers. Despite it's beauty, she didn't want to put it on. She didn't want to 'take it for a spin'. She didn't want to dance, to meet people, to talk, or not talk or not dance and stand alone in a crowded room. But she also didn't want to disappoint her cousin and role model.
Wallowing in what-ifs, the witch failed to notice a particulary high patch of grass catching the tip of her heel, tripping her. With a surprised yelp, her forearms hit the cold, soft ground. 'Oh fiddle sticks,' she scrambled to her feet, almost ripping her nylons as she did, trying to rub the green out of her knees and elbows. Grumbling under her breath, her eyes caught on a lone figure standing by the river. Driven by curiosity and a need to stall, she changed the trajectory of her path.
'In case nobody told you, the ball is happening over there,' she called out when just few paces away, pointing at the lit platform people danced on. Her own eyes followed the direction of her finger, lingering on the distant figures for a few beats before meeting the stranger's gaze.
'Or are you just taking a stroll in formal wear?'

Korinna slowly stepped forward, her lithe figure illuminated by the bright noise and bustle of the crowd. She really hadn't intended to come, but something about the way everyone was frantically rushing over here kind of sparked her interest. She'd already had an ocean themed outfit ready, just in case she - you know - actually decided to go. Or maybe that was just an excuse? Whatever.
She cast a look at the bright platform, muttering dejectedly to herself. Perhaps she'd just stay by the lake and-
"Fiddle sticks!"
Korinna looked up, surprised to see a girl who seemed to be about her year walking towards her, wearing a bright, opalesque colored mermaid dress. Mermaid girl was hastily rubbing grass off herself, much to Korinna's confusion, but the action alone made her seem a little less daunting to talk to.
"In case nobody told you, the ball is happening over there -" the girl called out, jabbing her finger at the lit platform where the ball was taking place. "Or are you just taking a stroll in formal wear?"
Korinna startled at the fact that the girl had tried to make conversation - or, well - that was the polite thing to do - but all the same, she did her best to sound confident and poised when she spoke, as the other girl had. "Psh, I could ask the same of you. Aren't you heading over there?" a pause. "Or are you just taking a stroll... "shoot, just saying "in formal wear" sounded unoriginal. She was out of good comebacks. A shame. "dressed as a walking mermaid? I- it looks amazing by the way" she added hastily.
In a swift motion, the ravenclaw turned her head and glanced towards the direction of the girl's finger for a second, turning back just as quickly. In what she hoped seemed like a friendlier tone, she looked the girl squarely in the eyes and tossed a small smile her way. "Korinna Nightshade. Second year Ravenclaw. And you?"

She smiled, catching the short pause in the other witch's speech. The girl recycled her line in a way one would copy their friend's homework – same message with slight rewording, 'In formal wear?' she supplied with a grin before adressing the question with a shrug, 'Well I was on my way to the- over there,' her arm lamely flapped in the ball's direction, eyes not leaving the moon lit girl, 'just taking a small detour, is all,' she finished in a mumble; a thinly veiled lie. Well, not lie, just half-truth.
Suddenly uncomfortable, the raven cast her eyes down, nose scrunching up when she spied the dark splotches at her knees. Despite their gray appearance under the night sky, she knew they'd be an awful mix of green and brown in daylight. Agh, Benny will murder her. Speaking of – she looked up again, only now acknowladging the paid compliment, 'Thank you – it's incredible, isn't it?' she lit up once more, twirlling to show off her outfit's full beauty, her pride at it obvious, 'my cousin – Benny – made it for me, specifically for this occasion – well, not this ocassion, obviously, I had no idea that I'd meet you but - you get it,' she cut her ramble off, but not before a slight brush of red had a change to spread over her cheeks.
Her brows rose at the girl's introduction. Not because she was surprised that the girl introduced herself, that was a fairly normal thing to do when someone met a new person, but because of what she said. Head titled in both question and slight amusement, Sabrina extended her hand in an offer of a handshake, 'Sabrina, Sabrina Lyons, Brie for short. Second year, Ravenclaw. How come we haven't met yet?'
