All the classes were over for the day and Cheryl walked down to the lake. She was walking all alone again. She didn't have any friends and she was socially awkward. It was a nice day. It was a cool day and there weren't many kids outside. She walked a little and found a spot to sit and watch the lake. Her long brown hair blew in the wind. Her blue-gray eyes focused on the glistering water. She thought a lot about home when she was alone like now and like most days. She wished that her family could be here to comfort her and tell her that everything was alright. She wished that someone would walk by and notice he and possibly talk to her. She sat there watching the lake and turning around every so often to see kids walking by laughing and giggling. She stood up and moved to a different place where there were fewer people than before. She still would hear people walk by but she wouldn't turn to see them anymore. She then began to skip stones to pass time. Each stone was a wish that she had and she pretended to send each one to a place where they would all come true. She stopped skipping stones and turned to look in the distance. She heard faint footsteps and could make out the shape of a person walking towards her. She felt like something inside her light up. She noticed that the person in the distance was walking alone. She told herself that she shouldn't be happy that someone is walking alone yet she was. She thought that this person might actually stop and talk to her. Then her body felt heavy. All of a sudden she felt her light inside get dim. She couldn't think of what to say to this person if they did stop to talk to her. She soon started to wish that the person would just pass by and ignore her. She felt like she would just embarrass herself if she attempted to talk to the person. She didn't know what to do. She looked up to see that the person was coming closer and her heart started to pound. She looked around for a place to hide so that the person wouldn't see her. She looked at the lake and thought that it was the closest place to hide. She could hold her breath for a while so she thought that she would be fine. She dove into the cool water as the person came even closer. She felt the water caress her body like if she were a baby. She hoped that the person didn't notice her diving into the water. She just hoped that they would ignore her.

A girl of average height with brown hair tied into two plaits, pretty blue eyes, and a skin tone that was a variation of white had made her way down to the Great Lake immediately after classes ended for the day. Her name was Ruby, she was nearly always straight-backed, and she carried herself with an air of sharp intelligence, quiet confidence, and something strong, like ambition, passion, power, or all three. She wasn't entirely aware of this air, it was natural for her, but people had told her about it before. She didn't have intentions to change it any time soon, since it felt normal and it didn't give away any information she would hate others to know about her.

The person who had walked so close to Cheryl was not Ruby, and as Ruby walked over to the lake, she watched that student walk away, wondering what had grabbed their attention only to make them leave so quickly. She peered into the glimmering lake carefully and saw a girl underwater there, looking as if she had just got in there. She had her robes and shoes on still, showing that this was probably a random, impulsive act, most likely to escape that other student, whoever they were. Ruby wrinkled her nose slightly and backed away from the edge of the water. She wouldn't like to have got all of that wet, and didn't like the idea of soggy robes and shoes afterwards. Anything in the girl's pockets would probably have been destroyed, unless it was waterproof.

With another glance at the girl in the water, Ruby noticed the Slytherin crest on her robes. She was pleased to see a fellow Slytherin, but wondered why on earth someone in the house of cunning, with shrewd and cleverness as house traits, would be in the water with robes and all on. Although she didn't blame the girl for possibly wanting to go in the water – it was a nice day, after all – she really hoped that this girl could swim and would surface soon. Ruby didn't want to have to deal with someone possibly drowning, not right now, not today, but she would if she had to.

Cheryl swam back up to the surface to allow herself to breathe again. When she opened her eyes she noticed a girl with plaited, brown hair and blue eyes standing there. She also noticed that the girl had the Slytherin crest on her robes as well. She was embarrassed to be seen by a fellow Slytherin after diving into the lake in her robes. She looked up at the girl with a shy smile and waved. She wondered how long had the girl been standing there. Cheryl opened her mouth to say something to the girl but nothing came out. Surprised that there was no sound she quickly closed her mouth. She closed her eyes and took a deep breath and tried to say something to the girl once more. She opened her mouth and this time words came out. "Hi um.. my name is Cheryl. I see that you are also in the house of Slytherin like me. Umm... I was wondering how long you have been standing there. Did you happen to see me um I don't know dive into the lake earlier? She realized that even if the girl hadn't seen her that now the girl knew what Cheryl had did earlier. She quickly changed the subject. "Um.. so my name is Cheryl Gorham and as you can see I am in the house of Slytherin." She motioned to her Slytherin crest on her robe. "So what's your name?" She replayed in her head what she had just said to the girl and realized that she had repeated herself several times and felt awkward now. She hoped that the girl didn't think bad of her now because of rambling. She looked down at the ground and saw that there was a small water puddle around her that was from her soaked robes. She just remained looking at the ground and waited for the girl to either answer or simply walk away.

Ruby smiled slightly and was mildly amused by this strange girl. She waved back and watched the girl open her mouth and close it again. The movement was almost like a fish, which was rather fitting, considering what the girl had just done. When the other Slytherin finally managed to speak, it almost made Ruby laugh as she noted how many times the girl said "um".

“I've only been standing here for a moment… No, I did not see you dive, but I saw you underwater. Are you okay, by the way? Why did you do that? In response to your other question, my name's Ruby – Ruby Cazares.” She decided to give both her first and last name this time, which was something that she hadn't really been doing recently, as she had been starting to become increasingly more annoyed with her family, especially her parents.

Everyone made mistakes, and so Ruby wasn't going to just walk away from this girl. Besides, Cheryl was… intriguing, in a way. Weird, definitely, but intriguing. Ruby was curious and wanted to know more about her and why she'd – apparently randomly – gone into the lake and then emerged to act so awkwardly. Ruby wanted an explanation and more knowledge about Cheryl before she let the other girl go anywhere. This was possibly the strangest way of meeting another student Ruby had experienced here so far, and she definitely wouldn't just walk away.

Cheryl was glad that the girl said something in response. She realized that the girl hadn't been there long but now she was asking why Cheryl had jumped into the lake. She felt her cheeks get red. "Yes I'm fine. I jumped into the lake earlier because I started to feel nervous as I saw someone coming closer this way." She stopped momentarily and thought to herself that Ruby probably thought of Cheryl as a weird girl that gets scared easily. "You most likely think that I am weird and say um a lot, but I don't. I just happen to get nervous around people that I don't know. I do get scared easily though. I usually don't get so scared that I hide but I guess today I wanted to be alone today for the most part and I didn't expect people to come to me for any reason." She stopped again. What if now Ruby thought that she was talked too much. " By the way, Ruby is a pretty name. It suits you, and your voice as well. I like them. Oh also if you think that I am talking too much or too fast, just tell me and I will stop." Cheryl looked around the area and hoped for the best. Hopefully, she would become friends with the girl. So what brings you out here, besides the nice weather and calmness. She felt like she made a better impression right now than before. She also hoped that her robes would dry very quickly so she wouldn't catch a cold or anything. Cheryl also wondered if she would see Ruby some other time as well since they were both in Slytherin. Cheryl's mind raced with different thoughts as she waited for Ruby's answers and questions if there were any.

Ruby resisted the urge to roll her eyes or laugh at Cheryl. She didn't want the mask of friendliness she wore to be shattered. Not when there was so much to be gained and so much information to be found out. Besides, maybe Ruby would eventually feel something genuine for this girl. Maybe. Assuming Cheryl was smart enough and worth her time.

The things that Cheryl had said and done first hadn't made a great impression on Ruby. She had been awkward, repetitive, and said "um" a lot, which made her harder to understand. Now, Ruby knew some more about this girl. She clearly got embarrassed pretty easily – judging from the blush – and didn't seem to like social interaction, to the point where she would jump in a cold lake to try and avoid it. She definitely got scared and nervous easily, which she had even said herself. Maybe it was a weakness, maybe it would pass or go away as she aged, or maybe it was something Cheryl needed to overcome, but Ruby wondered how the other Slytherin could cope with having that kind of nervousness.

Cheryl was clearly trying desperately to defend herself, and Ruby would just go with it. There was no need to make her fellow first year more uncomfortable than she already was, when that would only serve to scare her away. “Do you have a type of social anxiety then? Do you just not like talking to people? I apologize if I'm making you uncomfortable and if I came at an inconvenient time. Was there any particular reason you wanted to be alone – did anything happen?” She paused for a moment so Cheryl wouldn't be overwhelmed by the questions. “Thank you for the compliments, yours are nice too,” she replied politely. There was no harm in returning someone's compliment, and it was the polite, proper thing to do, really. Ruby wasn't sure how she felt about Cheryl's name and voice, but that didn't particularly matter.

“In response to your question, I like nature and being outdoors. The grounds and lake are quite nice here. It's also a good place to meet people.”

Cheryl was slightly surprised when Ruby started asking several questions. She wasn't used to someone asking here questions right off the bat. It was different for sure but Cheryl in a way felt good for being asked some questions for once. Most people here had looked at Cheryl once than walked off scoffing. "Well, I guess I kinda do have some social anxiety since I haven't really talked to anyone here and when I do I tend to freak out sorta. I do like talking to people but it hardly ever happens anymore. People just really don't talk to me here." Cheryl stopped and thought about the reason she came out here. She did want to be alone but she wasn't really sure why. Maybe it was because she was so used to it. "I guess I wanted to be alone out here since I already so used to being alone all the time. Everything is ok. Nothing happened. Oh, and you didn't come at an inconvenient time. I wasn't doing anything really. Well, except for jumping into a lake to avoid someone." She chuckled a little. She quickly stopped. Cheryl could feel that she had given a bad first impression to Ruby. She needed to start over with Ruby if she wanted any type of friendship to happen between them. "Listen, I know I haven't made a good impression at all and I'm sorry about that. I'm just not really used to this whole talking to people here yet. I usually am less nervous around people but here lately I haven't had many interactions with other people so at the moment I am very awkward. Sorry that we didn't meet under better circumstances but I hope that next time we talk, it won't be like this. That is if there will be a next time." Cheryl felt slightly embarrassed but not as much as before. She really hoped that this day (and this conversation) would get better. At this point all Cheryl could do was to wish for the best and hope that she had said enough to help this possible friendship with Ruby actually happen.

Ruby nodded as she listened to Cheryl's first comment. “Well, many people won't go and start a conversation with you unless they need to or unless you portray the right things. Maybe you should go talk to them first, rather than waiting for something to happen and expecting something to change,” Ruby said, seeming like she thought this was obvious.

“Do you want to change the fact that you're used to being alone?” Ruby asked. She studied the other girl's speaking and when she thought, from beginning to end. Ruby noted Cheryl's initial surprise, and then the tone of voice, the body language, the meaning behind the words she chose and said, the pauses and the look on her face as she stopped to think, and the chuckling which was suddenly cut off.

When Cheryl became more serious and apologized, Ruby was ever so slightly taken aback, but she didn't let it show. Okay, that definitely cleared things up a bit. It still didn't change Cheryl's weird, awkward first impression on her, but maybe the girl had some potential and could eventually become a friend – when she gained more confidence, of course. “It's alright, there's not much need to apologize,” Ruby began, not quite knowing if it was genuine or not. “I understand how you're feeling. There probably will be a next time, since we're both Slytherin first-years, so you'll have more chances.”

Ruby debated leaving soon, but she'd stick around at least until Cheryl replied and the conversation came to even more of a close.
