Lily pushed open the Library's doors, the familiar quiet chasing away any nerves immidietely. Yesterday's Potions class lingered in her mind all night, turning the expectation of a long tiresome semester into the possibility of something interesting and exciting.
Lily stilled held the smallest fear that Tala would change her mind and not show up. But she knew past all her fear that Tala would never do that. Plus, today wasn't just planning an assignment, it was also a chance to something real, a friendship possibly.
She had arrived earlier than the agreed meeting time in hopes to find the perfect table to set up. She quickly spotted an empty table near the back section, which so happened to be near the Potions references. It was secluded from the busier tables near the entrance of the library, leaving the area in a quiet ambiance perfect for focus.
As she laid out her notes, she thought about everything they would go through and decided to go pick up a couple books they might need. She laid out the notes she took the night before, her book on Potions ingredients and the perfect substitutions, and the few books she had just picked out, leaving a perfect spot for Tala's snacks. For once, she felt read, she had everything in perfect order just as she spotted Tala walking toward her.

"I know I had some pumpkin pasties lying here somewhere!" Tala said, frantically looking through her trunk. She had promised Lily she would be at the library right after lunch, but here she was, turning her dorm upside down looking for the pasties, and if she didn't head out soon, she was going to be late.
"Where did they go?!" Holding back tears, she took in a shaky breath.
Tala had already packed her bag full of different snacks - from magical ones like chocolate frogs and Bertie Botts Every Flavor Beans, to ordinary muggle ones she brought from home like Dairy milk and Lay's - but for some reason it seemed very necessary that she bring this specific snack.
She continued looking. In her frantic search, she accidentally knocked over her bag... And the pumpkin pasties fell out of it.
She had already packed them.
Picking up the bag, she ran out of the room, hoping she wouldn't be too late. When she was halfway to the library, she remembered that she didn't bring her books, and ran back to her dorm for them.
When she finally made it into the library, ten minutes late, she was a mess. Her hair had escaped her braid, she could barely take a breath, and she was on the verge of tears. Looking around, she finally spotted Lily sitting on a table near the back, she quickly ran the rest of the way towards her, and immediately started apologizing.
"I'm - so so sorry. The pasties were - lost, and then I found - ran here - then I forgot - my books-" she said, panting.

Lily listened carefully as Tala arrived at the table stumbling over her words. The girl's apology slipped out of her and Lily remembered aving a familiar feeling to that, she felt only sympathy for Tala. The earnest effort and guenuine chaos coming from Tala made the library feel less like a place to work. Lily didn't mind at all if Tala hadn't ended up bringing the snacks, she could have delt without them. But she was glad she brought them. She also didn't mind that Tala arrived late, she was just happy that this was actually happening.
Lily's setup was in order, the notes lined up precisely with lists and books. Pushing her chair back a little, she offered a slight smile and gesture to the empty spot in front of her. "Hey, it's okay. You're here now, that's all that matters," she tried to reassure, glancing to Tala's bag. "Take a breath. And here's the space I left for the snacks. What did you bring?" She said as she pointed out the empty space.
Late or messy, Lily didn't care, this felt real. A friendship taking place and simmering like the potion they plan to make. "I pulled all the basics of the Veritaserum, we can list the ingredients first as we eat up the snacks."

Lily didn't seem to be bothered in the slightest! In fact, she was being entirely too nice about it. She decided she wasn't going to question her good luck and sat down to catch her breath.
"Well, I brought some of the usual snacks, Bertie's, pumpkin pasties," she smiled internally at that, "and some muggle snacks I brought from home - I'm a half-blood by the way. I don't know how familiar you are with them, but they're absolutely fantastic, I'm addicted to them, especially the Lay's chips" taking said snacks out of the bag and showing them to her.
"You can help yourself to whatever you like, obviously, but I recommend the salt chips - they're the best. "
Taking a pumpkin pasty from the small mound of snacks, Tala continued, "now for the actual studying, I tried starting yesterday with the ingredients list, but got tired and bailed, so it's only half-written. I don't really know how useful that is, but I thought that maybe we might need it so I brought it. I'm a very 'just in case' person. I even always make sure to have a book to read with me every where I go just in case I wanted to-"
Not again. "I'm sorry. I guess I got carried away." Cheeks flaming, Tala said, " It's just that it has been a while since I felt like this around someone, and I got excited. Now let's study for real. No more nonsense blurting, I promise."

*This may sound annoying, or a bit much or whatever, but she's just genuinely afraid to mess up, as she thinks people will leave her if she does. This insecurity wasn't helped by the fact that her best friend in her old school left her not long before she got into Hogwarts, never explaining why she did that, and whenever Tala asked or tried to make up, she'd say that she wasn't angry or mad at her. Nevertheless, she still wouldn't talk to Tala.

Lily's smile deepened as Tala unpacked the snacks, the sweets and salty options making her stomach growl softly. Tala's rambling about the magical and muggle snacks she brought was honest and took any potental awkwardness away. Lily knew not everyone was well organized and orderless, and Tala being a little unorganized at this moment made Lily more comfortable and like her more.
As Tala finished speaking, Lily took over almost immidietely. "Don't apologize," she took a Lay's chip and tried it out. "This is amazing! I've always loved sweets more but this saltiness is perfect." Lily was amazed by how much she liked it.
Now she also needed to consider the work they had to do. "A half a list is better than none, we'll finish it together. Don't worry." Lily looked over the list and then to her notes about Veritaserum. "The Truth Serum needs precision, but as we finish this list, let's also include all the possible substitutions just in case." As Lily wrote down a couple things in her notes that matched up with the first ingredients on Tala's list. "And before we truly start, I don't mind random blurting or nonsense. I'll probably do that too, it makes this more fun."

As they worked together, listing ingredients and their possible substitutions, Tala found herself relaxing more around Lily. She leaned back on the wooden chair, stretching her arms over her head. "You know something Lily? Even though this is thing is seriously complicated, I didn't think it was possible to enjoy studying as much as I'm enjoying this project. I'm really grateful for the professor." Tapping her pencil - yes, Tala used pencils, they were way easier to use than quills - on the wooden table, she continued, "I know we don't really know each other, but would you like to hang out sometime? I love to do a lot of stuff and would be ok with anything, indoors or outdoors, whatever you like. I love reading and watching movies and t.v series. What are your favourites? Or maybe we can go to the lake? I really like seas and oceans, and it's the closest things at Hogwarts. Or maybe - " realizing she hadn't even taken a breath, let alone leave Lily space to answer, she cut off. "Or maybe I could actually let you answer. I know this is getting annoying, and I apologize." Giving her a shy smile. "You're honestly amazing for tolerating this for as long as you have, sometimes even my brothers ask me to shut up and let them respond first."

You're fun to listen to, and it makes time fly and the work seem less torturous. Honestly, I was homeschooled before Hogwarts, so I didn't have many friends to chat with, so this is nice." She grabbed another snack and savored the treat before looking at their notes again. They had made amazing progress, and time had flown by quite fast. The sun was starting to set and she knew their time was almost over. The Veritaserum ingredient list was done now and the substitutions added on to complete it.
She took in consideration everything Tala had said in her rush. "The Great Lake sounds perfect, I haven't managed to explore it yet anyway. We could hangout there, it'd be perfect to just meet up and talk about all our favourite things, like books and movies. And no homework for this next hangout." She was excited to hear more about Tala and finally explore the lake.
dinner time was approaching and she needed to head back to her room first. "We could meet at the lake tomorrow, maybe near sunset. I hear the view is beautiful at that time." She suggested as she started packing up her things.
