Wind blowing with drizzling rain through the outside of windows; branches of old willow swaying, tapping the window beside the brunette rhythmically; the young Everhart buried her head in book mountains around her, and propped her chin on her left hand, brows furrowed. Rosaline’s expression was anxious, spinning her pen unconsciously, contrary to her usual relaxed, optimistic smile she put on her face every day. The parchments laid in front of her on the desk; there were only a few ink dots on it. Rosaline stared at them for a moment. It was several weeks after the Christmas break and she had gradually found her study pace back, yet when she needed to face the Herbology, her brain was all mixed up and she was confused again.

Rosaline peeped her head from her high-stacked of books, observing the library to avoid the essay she needed to write about Fire Seed. The requirement was a daunting three feet long! If it was any other subjects, she could simply nail it and write out even more than three feet, but it was Herbology, the nemesis of her life, she had no idea why she was so not good at this. Rosaline grew up in a house with large garden and she went to her grandparents’ house for summer, where they had a giant greenhouse with all the herbs and plants. Logically speaking, she should’ve aced this subject. Only Merlin knew why. Though this was frustrating to the young girl, she wouldn’t be beaten down so easily; that was why she had brought so many books from the shelves to here. Her arms were a bit sore by moving with heavy, large books. Her mind came back from her loose threads of thoughts to reality.

The library was full of people, not because of tests but because of the dim damp weather today, the young brunette speculated. Her eyes darted around to see if there was anyone that she was familiar with. Apparently, none of her friends were here. Though Rosaline liked to spend time alone, the scenario of solving the homework by her own wasn’t the best for her.

Some books laid open besides the parchment, while others remained on the stacks. Rosaline sat back, leaning her back on the chair, shifting her weight and crossing her arms in front of her. Scanning every spine of books that she had carried here, she decided to pick One Thousand Magical Herbs and Fungi to help her, yet it was under three other books. As she leaned forward, the precariously stacks of books were already teetering, as soon as her fingers put on the specific book she wanted to get reference from and gently pulled it out, the three books on top of it soon fell on the ground. Rosaline tried to reach her wand but there was no time for her to cast Levitation Charm. A heave thud, luckily the rug on the floor was soft, still, the sound drew some attention from other students. “Sorry, sorry…” Rosaline muttered her apology in a low voice as she leaned down to pick the books up. Worrying if she would be kicked out from the library because of this chaos, she was so focused in her mind for now.

Who would have thought he would become someone else' disaster today, in his experience, that was usually how things started going wrong. It was not his intention when he went to the library. He was left with no choice because of the bad weather, which was already a pain because his sketching time was ruined. As much as he wanted to stay outside, it would be of no use to his sketch pad if it's completely soaked. With no other plans in mind, he decided to put his attention to their homework about Fire Seeds, and that was why he even bothered going to the library in the first place. A quick read, write, in and out, as simple as that. He was not a perfect O student though he would argue with you that he was not that bad either. Being new to Hogwarts and to the Wizarding world, he was mostly driven by the will to prove himself, that he belongs in this world and that he could also do what other students do. It was the main reason why he could get by with his lessons, no matter how difficult, challenging, or impossible they were, and he was proud of his accomplishments so far.

Outside, the rain kept tapping the windows in uneven patterns. The willow branches near the glass moved rapidly. The library was warmer by contrast, you can smell parchment, hear slow chatters and the occasional rustle of pages turning. Those were the things he was used to encountering while he was in there, without fail. He was walking between shelves when he heard the thud, which made him stop pulling one book about Herbology. His head craned in that direction where he heard the sound.

In all his experience in the library, that sound had never been anything good. Slowly poking his head out of the row he was in, he saw a girl crouching beside a fallen stacks of books. One thing he noticed, that's a lot of books and definitely a falling hazard. Here he thought he was just watching, but he had not realized his feet were already moving, bringing him to that direction before he could think too much about it. Thinking usually made things more complicated, and books on the floor were not supposed to be complicated problems in his personal opinion. Sometimes he didn't know if that was a good trait of him to always offer some help, or it's a bad habit at this point because it usually put him in an embarrassing situation.

Reaching where the girl was, he also crouched down. "Here, let me help..." He picked up one of the books and set it back onto the pile she was gathering. “Careful...” It's not meant to sound serious but it came out as such. His gaze went to the parchment she's working on and accidentally saw what it was about. That earned an exhale of breath from him. No wonder, the girl had that expression, it's the same one when someone was trying to wrestle plants into their mind when they all wanted to do was avoid doing it. The corner of his mouth lifted slightly, showing his amusement.

Now that he was looking at her closely, he realized he knew the girl, they're on the same year. "Fire Seed homework I suppose?" He put the book he got on top of the other books. “Everything okay here?” That seemed like the correct way to go about this without looking like he's intruding while she's doing their homework.

With uneasiness, Rosaline picked up the books one by one. Usually the texture of the old, hard covers could calm her, yet not now, not this situation. It did not work, at all. The wanted time. She could’ve used them on researching or actually writing her essay. Sighing, she shook her head and didn't want to indulge the negative feelings in her chest anymore. Finally finishing organizing a stack of books that were scattered on the carpet, she didn’t enjoy this specific experience.

Propping her hands on her knees, she stayed still in the crouching position, contemplating her life choice. Should she not tell her parents about the possible grade of herbology? Should she abandon the concept of excelling in any subject? A sound of footsteps disrupted her self-doubt. Rosaline was almost on the verge of panicking. The thought of being thrown out by the librarian was eating her stomach like little black ants. She clutched the hem of her skirt, head down, staring at the carpet. It was as if she were deep in thought studying the patterns of it. She wouldn’t blame the librarian if she had gotten thrown out, since she indeed made those noises. Yet a warm voice and steady hands came through her anxiety and into her sight. She looked up and found their owner was a gentle boy. He seemed vaguely familiar, perhaps the same year as her. She hadn’t interacted with him before, yet she definitely had seen him around on campus and in classes. “Here, let me help…” Upon hearing his words, she felt her miserable fate today was a little bit salvageable. “Thank you…” Her face flushed from the awkwardness. This wouldn’t be the first impression she would ever want anyone to remember, let alone a classmate. Her head went down again, focusing on the task of saving books, not saying too much.

With the boy’s help, they soon gathered all the books and placed them back on the desk. Rosaline rose up, straightening her clothes. After the short silence, she had gained her composure back. The rosy pink still lingered on her cheeks, but it was less noticeable. Hearing the inquiry about herbology from the boy, with the late realization, she had pieced everything together. The boy was in the same herbology class with her. “Yeah, I’m working on it. Although as you can see, I am also struggling,” Rosaline answered with a sheepish smile, reluctantly acknowledging the fact. Thumbing the edge of her parchment, she said, “I’m Rosaline, by the way, a first-year too. It’s a pleasure meeting you. Although not the perfect situation. If I recall correctly, you’re a Hufflepuff, right?” She tilted her head and looked at the boy in front of her with a curious light shining in her cerulean eyes. Then she answered his question, “Thanks for asking. I’m just a bit confused about the effect of Fire Seed. I really did listen to the lecture, but it keeps slipping out of my mind.” She sighed dramatically. Her brows furrowed. Glancing at the boy, Rosaline noticed what he had brought here. “Are you here for the same homework?” Then she chuckled softly. “Sorry for the silly question. If you don’t mind, this table should be big enough for both of us.” She cleared the table, setting the books aside to make some space for him. “Also, I might’ve borrowed all the books about Fire Seed. They are all here.” Finishing adjusting the books on the desk, she sat down elegantly, composed, like the little accident didn’t even happen before.

The last thing Zephyr wanted when he decided for his presence to be known was to startle her. He noticed how her body stiffened when she looked up. She must have thought he was a professor, or worse the Librarian. Relief was visible on her face when she saw him that it made him smile. Being this close to her, he also noticed the faint pink spreading across her cheeks.

After helping her gather the books, she thanked him for his help. "Don't worry about it." She seemed to be very embarrassed about it but she really shouldn't. Once the last book was safely back on the table, he breathed deeply. "There, all good now." His eyes flicked back to her, who was looking down so earnestly as she smoothed her skirt absentmindedly. She probably wanted to do well, which explained the mountain of Herbology books she managed to collect. A sheepish smile tugged at his mouth. "If it makes you feel better, I nearly dropped things plenty of times myself." Usually buckets, tools, or feed sacks while doing his chores on the farm.

She admitted to him that she was struggling with the homework, he couldn't stop himself from smiling because she sounded so disappointed in herself over it. It was normal reaction for him. Everyone has one subject they're struggling about, his happened to be Transfiguration, apparently, hers was Herbology. He was just not sure if this was a one time thing for her for this particular homework, or it was the subject overall. "You're not the only one, we all have this moment. I'm struggling with Transfiguration, too many things to consider there while transfiguring an item to something else."

His tone stayed light and accommodating, hoping she wouldn't worry admitting to it. When she introduced herself, his expression shifted into one of mild surprise, "I know, I know you." As soon as he said that, he realized how odd that sounded. His ears immediately warmed. "I mean...We've got a couple of subjects together. I've just never actually introduced myself properly." He offered his hand politely, "I'm Zephyr Deakin." She guessed he was a Hufflepuff, "Yup!" It was uttered with pride. He had grown rather fond of the house over the year. The common room reminded him of home with the wood and plants everywhere.

She explained that it was the effects of Fire Seed she keeps on forgetting, his eyes automatically went to the parchment she's been staring at, "I think that's because there are too many plants that all sound similar. When I read about Fire Seeds, Bubotubers and Fluxweed in the same evening, all the information about them started mixing together in my mind." He smiled, "My mum said it's easier to remember plants if you imagine what they're actually be doing instead of trying to memorize every sentence." Perhaps that's why Herbology seemed more natural to him than most subjects.

He was asked if he was here for the same homework, "I am." just as his eyes went back to the fortress of books she has collected. "You've claimed every useful reference in the library." He sounded amused. At her offer to join her, he nodded, "Thank you..." and slid into the chair opposite her. He set his own journal and quill on the cleared space. He reached for the first book nearby, and in a teasing tone, he said, "I was wondering where they all went. I thought someone beat me to them." He turned a few pages until he found the chapter they needed. "You want to do this together?"

The rain was continuing outside, and it seemed to get stronger and stronger. Yet the castle inside was quiet, dry, warm, and safe. The scent of the parchment and old books could always calm her down. And the boy, Zephyr, his gentle smile and the comforting words from him made her feel better instantly.

Rosaline finally looked up straight to Zephyr's face. His expression was friendly and gentle. She felt she could trust the Hufflepuff and tell him some of her trouble she encountered this semester. Although she would never dump all the negative feelings to someone she just met, she was grateful that Zephyr was listening to her trouble and consoling her. Rosaline showed a smile at him once more with crescent eyes. “I dropped things all the time too. Last time in the common room, I accidentally dropped a book when I was dozing off.” She chuckled lightly and shared her somewhat embarrassing incident that had happened before. It made this one less awkward in a way. Honestly, if her first real interaction with Zephyr was like this already, she felt less pressure being a perfect person around him. “What did you drop for the last time?” She asked with a smile tugging at the corners of her lips.

When she heard Zephyr had a subject that he wasn't particularly good at, Rosaline's spirit was boosted a little. It was not that she wanted to see anyone struggle; it was that she felt she was not alone, not the only one experiencing frustration at least. “Thank you for that. I am actually quite good at Transfiguration! If you'd like to, you can ask me questions about it anytime,” Rosaline said, and her smile widened. She really loved helping people whenever she could.

Rosaline felt silly after asking if Zephyr was a Hufflepuff, since it was an obvious fact. The pink crept up to her cheeks once again. It wasn't a surprise to her that Zephyr knew her name. They had been classmates for half a year in some shared classes. But it was a bit her fault that she didn't recall Zephyl's name at the first moment. “Zephyr Deakin… You have a great name." She grinned widely and shook hands with him. “I'm a Gryffindor, by the way. I forgot to mention it.” The house she didn't expect to be sorted into now became one of the places that she felt very proud of.

Catching Zephyr glancing at her parchment, she wanted to cover it, but it was all too late. There was her messy draft and the obvious struggling thinking process; the only thing that was nearly perfect was her delicate handwriting on it. She managed to conceal her awkwardness, showing only a hint of furrowed brows, and listened to Zephyr's suggestions intently. “Indeed, what you said makes so much sense! I haven't thought of Herbology in that way.” She mused for a second, taking in the tips. “Your mom is so wise; she must be very good at herbology, I guess.” Rosaline showed a genuine smile at him. “I don't really have chances to know the plants better because I live in London. Though technically, I have plenty of chances… My grandfather is a potioneer, and there’s a big greenhouse at their manor. But I guess I still have a lot to learn.” Rosaline kept her head down again and spoke in a low voice.

Hearing Zephyr was here for the same homework, she felt more assured and relaxed. She had cleared some books, which were originally stacked in the center of the table, to the side so that she could communicate with Zephyr. The books were as walls protecting the shared little space they had right now. They kept the light noises and bad weather outside at bay. She said quietly as she heard his remark about her getting all those books, “I guess the early bird can borrow all the books.” A grin was across her face. She answered Zephyr's question cheerfully, “Yeah, of course. Though I doubt I can be useful at all.” She pressed her lips together and took a deep breath, musing. “Maybe I can start with this book and take notes about Fire Seeds. And then when we finish, we can discuss." Rosaline pulled one of the books from the pile of fortresses, very carefully, and put it on the table. She tilted her head, faced Zephyr, and waited for his answer.

OOC Notes: So sorry for the delay! :ninja:
At Rosaline’s confession, Zephyr’s amusement was visible on his face. Dropping a book because she had fallen asleep was not really terrible unlike what happened to him last time. He needed a moment to decide if he really wanted to share it with her. In the end, the corner of his mouth twitched upward. “Me.” Followed by a sheepish grin, “I dozed off in our common room. I must have shifted the wrong way because the next thing I knew, the chair fell over and I went down with it.” It was a horrible moment of waking up and being seen by a housemate. There were better ways to wake from a nap.

Her offer concerning Transfiguration came to him as a surprise. Transfiguration was one of those subjects he was not confident to deal with than Herbology. Changing one thing into something different was very odd to him, especially when the smallest mistake in concentration could leave the result somewhere awkwardly between the two. “I might take you up on that. Transfiguration and I aren’t friends yet.” At least now he knew one more person who was good at it.

She complimented his name which was another surprise for him but he did accept her hand and shook it gently. “Thank you, my mom told me it has a good meaning too. It means a gentle west wind.” It suited him well. “And I know you’re Gryffindor student. I’ve seen you around, we share some classes.” Rosaline was one of those student he doesn’t have the privilege to talk to regularly, but he knew her face. First years crossed paths often although they’re not housemates. She had a different circle of friends from his, so there was never a reason for either of them to speak a lot.

Their conversation went to his mother because of Herbology and plants. “She’s good with plants, that’s true, mom’s a muggle so she’s familiar with muggle plants and herbs. She manages the greenhouse back home, and makes her own natural herbal teas. We sell them too.” His expression softened a little at the thought of home. Their greenhouse was filled with herbs, vegetables and plants his mother spent years nurturing and he learned a surprising amount by following her around. Rosaline’s circumstances were almost the opposite. “If your grandfather’s a Potioneer then I suppose you’ve got a pretty good place to learn whenever you visit.”

He didn’t add that a manor sounded impressive. She must be very rich. The more Rosaline spoke, the more curious he became about her. She even had access to a greenhouse full of plants, a potioneer for a grandfather, was good at Transfiguration and yet Herbology was her nemesis. Funny how that worked. Her little remark about being the early bird was quite funny. “Looks like it.” He eyed the books she accumulated. For her suggestion, he easily agreed as it’s a logical decision. They work separately first and compare what they have found after.

While reading, he was writing notes occasionally in a parchment whenever he found something useful, and would pause if needed to concentrate on reading. Herbology was his favourite subject, and he takes every task given to them seriously. Unconsciously, his gaze above the edge of his book… to Rosaline who was also reading but he immediately lowered his gaze again. A few minutes later, it happened once again. Just a simple glance, curiosity kept getting the better of him. They shared classes for months without speaking to each, and now within one conversation he learned more about her than he had during half a school year. Read, Zephyr. He tried focusing back on the current page but there was a trace of amusement on his face by then.
