𝔊reenish, murky waters reflected in return a grotesque amalgamation of incomprehensible expressions of a young Hufflepuff girl, currently peeking down from the wooden dock of the Boathouse. Her smooth face is contorted into a healthy combination of astonishment and disbelief before it morphed into devastation and wretched despondence, as the said girl, prior to this moment, witnessed her black walnut wand bounced off the wooden platform before it plopped in the cloudy waters of the Great Lake. There is a certain indifference in that "plop!", she heard. Of course, Aurelia is not entirely foreign with the concept of dramatisation of things. It is almost an old friend she greeted back as every miniscule detail of that very moment replayed like a broken record—the loss of presence of the wood material as the wand slipped off her fingers; ricocheting off the dock, wood to wood; before the said wand landed in the lake waters with a "plop!". It is gone, now liberated from the shackles that is the torment shw subjected it into.

The young badger sat up with such slowness, deep brown eyes leaving her cloudy reflection while the wooden surface of the dock is digging onto her white, bony knees. The focus of her vision shifted from object to object as though waiting for answers and instructions. When nothing of the sort emerged from between the dense trees, the dirty lake, inside the Boathouse, or even from the sun itself—a long, shrilly screech tore out from the back of her throat, the sound piercing through the atmosphere which disturbed the nearby flock of birds resting within the vicinity.

Another dramatic instance that has befallen Aurelia M. Valentine.

Deciding that one should practise their spellcasting frequently, Aurelia hauled all of her textbooks, wand tucked within her raven curls tied to a bun. The girl strutted in the halls with an importance of a self-proclaimed scholar, on the way to the Boathouse where she often brandish her spellcasting skills. The clickety-clack of the soles of her Mary Janes against the marble floors made the badger all the more supercilious, her chin haughtily jutted out as she ambulated towards her destination. The young Valentine did carry herself like there is nothing brewing beneath the surface.

Brewing is an understatement.

It was already brewing last summer—before that, even. Perhaps during the year-end examinations.

The black walnut wand, readily deemed an extension of a witch such as herself, begun "malfunctioning" for no apparent reason. The repeated failure of casting a spell is almost redundant for her now, however, it would be a big, fat lie if Aurelia claims that this is not triggering her underlying resentment and frustration she unconsciously harboured from all the spells, charms, and curses the stupid wand repetitiously blundered. The sparks it conjured in every blunder helped form a fantasy of breaking it in half or chucking it in the large fireplace of the Hufflepuff Common Room in order to soothe her throbbing nerves. Start a new life with an entirely new wand—forget this existed. Still, she mourned. The black walnut wand was fully-functioning and was doing spectacular before it all went downhill. She did not know what happened... Although, Aurelia is aware—wholly convinced, really—that she is, surely, at fault.

“What should I do?” A helpless whine. Eyes zeroed in on the murky waters again.

It is October. The autumnal atmosphere would fail to elude one's notice, particularly the ones presently in solitude—solitary creatures who has absolutely no one to beg for help, for a solution to a predicament the protagonist had come across with from bursting in anger. The reminder of the gentleness of wind blowing today asked for attention, the trees rustling, and rotten leaves mercilessly pulled from their respective branches, forcing them to join the dance—it is an autumnal equinox. One who already witnessed such phenomenon for years, who had exhausted the details for so long, can appreciate and cherish the display no longer. No level of melancholia can stretch the said season out.

A floating rotten leaf stirred her reflection in the water as it glided past, the ripples fragmenting her already distorted image before reverting back to its original wobbly form. It stared back at her with an accusatory gaze, sported only natural as Aurelia's way. This twin looked as though the answer was just right there.

Stupidly, right there.

Mary Janes flew off her feet with a suddenness like bullets—one shoe shooting off toward Neverland—and behind the flurry of disrobing her cloak, the young Valentine dived in the murky waters of the Great Lake, which the girl was insulting a moment ago.

A fool's errand, it might be. Nevertheless, the young badger cannot afford a whole new wand just yet.

A change in location always did wonders for inspiration. Her quill and ink had frequented the Great Lake countless times, the horizon and the reflection of the waters repeatedly etched into parchment time and time again. Though repetition allows an artist to practice and perfect, it was beginning to bore. Ebony was an artist driven not by perfection, but by ad hoc ruminations that led her brushstrokes wherever the muse existed. Today, those ruminations drove her towards the Boathouse. The girl was no regular client to the location; there was something so strangely pretentious about the location that had previously repelled her. The ceiling was ostentatiously arched, illuminated by equally performative lamps that served no purpose other than to add to the grandeur. The fishing gear too — hooks, nets, and whatnot — seemed so redundant in a world where magic existed. Why bait and reel the fish so tediously if a simple "accio fish!" would suffice? The Boathouse appeared as though it only served the purpose to disseminate propaganda upon the opulence of the castle to first years, for it was the first structure one would come across upon arriving at Hogwarts; she herself had certainly fallen for the promotion of its grandeur, though the castle only became less and less resplendent over time. Though, it was to be admitted that the heavily ivy-tendrilled structure and the obscured waters that surrounded it served as perfect artistic material. It served as the perfect blend between the natural and the artificial, of magical and mundane, the juxtaposition only accentuated by the almost sinister glow in which the lamps cast upon the murky depths.

Consequently, Ebony Vetra sat in the Boathouse, shrouded in the silhouettes of the corners and watching. A notebook of the Muggle kind — for it allowed greater artistic expression than the wizarding parchment — sat open on the brunette's lap, under the curse of blankness and lack of imaginativeness. It was no problem; she would simply have to wait until the right moment arrived. Until the inspiration striked.

The fifth year was not alone, however. Before her stood a young Hufflepuff girl — she couldn't have been older than third year — who was practising spellcasting, by the looks of it. Ebony speculated that the girl was unaware of her presence, though she was perhaps not as discreet and obscured as she believed herself to be. She had no way of confirming the other's awareness of her, but what could be observed was the girl's complete engrossment in whatever shenanigans and wand-waving being performed that… didn't seem to produce any satisfactory result. Quite studious, wasn't she, this girl? Ah, that certainly served as a reminder that she herself was in dire need of preparing for the imminent OWLs that were drawing ever closer. It was only fall, yet the stress already felt constricting — a pressure that was descending rapidly, threatening to crush her against these very stone floors upon which she was seated. Studies could wait, however. Engaging in hobbies was a much-needed stress reliever at times; a mental health break, if one desires to place a term upon it. The young wand-waving witch sure appeared as though she needed a mental health break, too. Despite the rather pompous tilt of the head that the girl seemed accustomed to maintaining, there almost seemed to be a silhouette of crazed derangement — monomania — concealed behind those burnt umber eyes.

People-watching was one of the brunette's few hobbies. Although by no means did she enjoy interacting with fellow homo sapiens, watching them was a whole other novel. The little gestures that reflected one's desires; the slightest shifts in the visage that divulged whether a statement contained sarcasm; the dilation of pupils that conveyed emotion more expressively than any smile ever could. It was these clandestine indications that truly unveiled human nature, that revealed the essence of character. It was these mortal constituents that were the most beautiful, the most worthy of capturing. Encapsulating this human nature was what the brunette strived to do with her splotches of ink and brushes of paint. Though replicating a landscape or the reflection of light was intriguing and was sure to enhance skill, it is the human element conveyed through art that really renders it revelatory. Thus, Ebony's art aimed to reflect such anthropogenic thoughts and emotion. She was no Occlumens and no highly keen-eyed individual, but as an artist, she held a perception of sentiment that others might not.

She was thus unsurprised when a shrill scream pierced the air.

The poor girl, for the past few minutes, had appeared to be quite frantic; one of her (likely treasured) possessions seemed to have tumbled into the incessant nadirs of watery murkiness. It was bound to detonate in a display of frustration — hence the scream, case proven.

And then a shoe.

A shoe? Ebony moved her head to evade the unprecedentedly flying footwear, and — like a jolt of lightning — the girl had plunged into the waters, likely in search of the very much treasured possession that she had dropped (thrown?) into the Lake. It was almost as though the emotions were reflected upon her. The chaos was palpable; it was almost tangible, the despair and the panic and the frustration that hung in the air like suspended water droplets.

It struck. The inspiration, the muse, the desire to art.

She cast the paint upon the paper, the amalgamation of colours smearing together to resemble the murky blue-green of the lake. Strokes were masterfully painted, phantasms of the girl and the anarchic nature of chaos apparating themselves onto the page in the form of inked applications. A line, and a smear, and a blemish, and a circle here; a chef-d'oeuvre was in the making. A virtuous representation of poignancy and fervency simultaneously.

So engrossed in the work of art she was now, that she had completely neglected the fact that the poor witch was likely panicking, and that a younger colleague of hers was underwater, quite possibly struggling to swim, and that she would very much likely benefit from an additional pair of hands to search. No, none of that occurred to Ebony, for she was captivated by the definition of artistic expression placed so blatantly before her eyes and in her very hands.
