My New Clothes for My New Life
As I walk through Diagon Alley, I make a decision to go to Madam Malkin to get my robes. I approach the purple shop and look through the windows. It seems that there are a lot of kids in there, some already in robes and some not.
I look back down at my list to see how many robes I will be needing. The list says three, so I enter and walk up to a tiny brown desk, where an older woman is sitting. Before I can say anything she looks up at me through her tiny glasses.
"Are you a first year in need of a robe fitting, dear?"
"Yes, ma'am. It says here that I will need three plain black work robes, one pair of protective gloves, a pointed hat, and a winter cloak. Can you help me find those?"
"Of course! Go stand over there. I'll be right over."
She points in the direction of a stool, so I walk over to the stool and stand by it. I can't help but look into the mirror right in front of the stool. I look scared, almost. I definitely look uncertain. I am kind of pale causing my green eyes to be more distinct than usual.
The woman walks over to me and points at the stool. I know immediately that she wants me to step on it. So I shake the nerves out of my hands and step onto the stool. She grabs my wrists and gently raises them so I am standing like the letter "T". I close my eyes as she charms a tape measure to take some measurements around my waist and arms.
"Are you nervous, dear?"
I open my eyes, smile, and say "Just a tad. I am very new to this whole magic thing, so I am still figuring things out."
"Halfblood?"
"Yes, ma'am."
I start to feel a little bit uncomfortable talking about my status, but at the same time I feel more comfortable. She makes me want to open up, kind of like my grandmother does. The only difference is that I have known my grandmother for years and I just met this lady.
"Are you Madam Malkin?" I ask, strictly out of curiosity.
"Oh, no. I am just the assistant." She says and smiles. She has little wrinkles around her eyes whenever she smiles.
After a while my arms start to get really sore, but I ignore it and try to focus on where I am planning on going next. I really wish that I could move to see my list again. I practically live by my list, so this whole not being able to get to it, is kind of making me anxious.
"Ok, dear. You can lower your arms and step down."
I smile and say thank you as she hands me a lavender bag with all of the clothes that I told her about before. After I am done briefly looking in the bag, I look up and smile at the lady that helped me.
"Thank you so much for helping me today! I hope you have a wonderful rest of your day!"
"Of course, dear. Have a good day and good luck on your sorting."
I walk to the front of the shop, through the door, and out onto the street full of people. I pull my list of school supplies out of my pocket and feel a thrill as I see that all of my clothing items are magically marked off for me. 'This is going to be the coolest experience ever!' I think to myself.
Prove them wrong. Twice.
