Beneath the Sweet Vine
| Note: French, Thoughts | ━━━━━━━━━━━━━ |
At her home in Blockley, England. During the summer of 2025 After Midnight Oil |
The sun would cast a warm kiss.
Her hands would reach up, gently snapping a sweet from the tree above. The effects still lingered, still felt dark under the light. How was it that such chaos and pain lay hidden beneath the sweet vine she had mistakenly found with Samuel? The screams for the gods who roared with amusement as her leg snapped and the creature sought the relief of its own hunger.
Edith's gaze would shift to her hands, where the sweet's stem had been snapped. She could tell herself that the plant was not at fault, that it was only nature's way of living, that it was her fault for following Samuel past the rusted gates that had warned the souls from passing the threshold.
That just like the creature, she sought to soothe her own hunger.
Bringing it to its demise, the closer she walked to her home, where she had planned to wash the fruit.
It was only nature... right?
The will to survive while keeping guard against danger, paranoia was bound to grow.
Especially when she had not planned to expect the knocking on her door.
I am not expecting anyone... or at least she did not recall agreeing to a visit. Her eyes would narrow slightly before sighing and placing the fruit down on the counter, her voice carrying a hint of exhaustion as she walked to answer her door, "Just a moment".
Heels would click against the wooden floor before her hands grabbed the cold doorknob. The once warm light momentarily blinded her, causing her eyes to squint. Many would have expected to see someone in particular, or any familiar face; Edith's mind went blank, unsure of who to expect.
To much of a peculiar relief, her squinted gaze would see no one.
Perhaps she had misheard, wished to have heard the knock.
Or she subconsciously knew her mind was running into a spiral she had to get out of before she lost herself in a dream.
The burning feeling of the sun against her skin created a tingling feeling she tried to shake off as she muttered and moved to close the door, only to stop mid movement when something caught her eye.
A box.
A muffled sound emitted from the brown box, and her head tilted, noticing the holes at its side. "I may be going cra-" A thud cut her sentence short before she reached down to pick up the box. No, she most definitely heard it; there was something alive inside the box.
And someone had knocked on her door.
Looking around for a sign of whoever had left the box, one of her hands would hold onto the doorknob before stepping back and closing the door, leaving her alone with the box and the silence of her home. The box would shift in her hands before she made her way further inside, placing it down on the kitchen island.
Edith hummed softly in thought as she examined the box before opening it, a note scribbled on the inside of one of the flaps: 'For disruption to change, an unconventional companion for a lady.' Unconventional companion? She had no idea what that meant... yet.
Her eyes would widen as she saw what appeared to be a small snout poke from one of the corners, gasping softly when she quickly opened the box fully. "Oh for Merlin!" As if momentarily forgetting the paranoia, her hands picked up the white-furred kit. Cooing at it as she looked at it closely, "oh what a baby, aren't you just an angel..." The DEW's (dark-eyed white) big dark eyes would look at her, perhaps mildly terrified by her sudden reaction to him.
The once silent walls would glow with the sound of her giggles as she looked at the cute little thing wiggle around, "who left you here, sweetie?" Edith gently placed it back in the box as she looked around for a bowl to give him some water, oblivious to the fact that the kit had crawled out of the box and was inspecting the fruit she had left nearby.
That was until she turned.
She would gasp, spilling some water as she rushed over, "Fig don't! er I mean, don't eat the fig." Edith would quickly place the bowl down to grab the fig she had left on the table, her shoulders relaxing once she made sure the kit had not decided to take a bite of the fruit. "I need to make sure to put dangerous things out of his reach..." mentally creating a list as she wiped her hand on her handcloth.
After placing the fig away, she scooped him back up and into the box he'd go where she would find a small letter beneath all the scraps of paper the creature had begun to roll on."Well, that would have been good to know..." Edith sighed as she sat on an island stool, the small paper crumpling slightly as she looked behind it for any signature. The kit (DOB 2025.04.13) does not have a name; you name it.
PS. He is an adventurer; don't let him eat the figs outside.
Wait- paranoia grew once more as she looked back towards the front door.
How did the sender know she had figs outside in her garden?
