Although Livia was a firm adherent to the tenet that learning was best done by performance and practice, she, nonetheless, understood the importance of observation. This was most often done in a scientific approach; upon forming a hypothesis, it would be routinely tested, with data collected to either support or denounce the statement in question.

If one were to ask her, she would have hypothesised that refereeing a practice duel would boost her ability to read her opponents. Perhaps she might learn an additional spell, too. The possibilities, seemingly, were endless.

Thus, when two individuals within her year needed someone who understood the rules of the piste like the back of their hand, Livia was pleased to offer herself as tribute. She wore a brown blouse and a long black skirt, paired with the black, Victorian-style leather boots she always liked to wear if she might need to pair practicality with style. As always, her hair was woven tightly into a chignon at the back of her head; all the better should she need to assist someone with heading to the hospital wing. There would come a day when the young Slytherin would have great finesse with healing spells; unfortunately, that day had not arrived yet.

She arrived at the piste thirty minutes early, and she waited, wand in hand, gaze blank, ready for the duellists to make themselves seen. Once they arrived, she would nod in greeting at each before offering a small overview of the rules. 'As I trust you are aware, this is a friendly duel. You are to abide by the rules of the piste – only the use of legal spells, body-blocking and dodging are allowed. You may not engage in mundane violence, nor may you use potions or illegal spells. Once you are ready, please take your places on the piste so that we may begin – and may fortune give you favour.'

𝕴t was time again. Julia was once again duelling. This time, her opponent was Cirrus Mooney, a First year Hufflepuff. Julia didn't know Cirrus very well, but they had encountered each other quite a lot in the hallways and often during classes too. They decided to do a duel in a quite abrupt way. Julia badly wanted to practice duelling so she'd approached Cirrus after a class and had asked. Cirrus had accepted and Julia had sought out to choose a moderator. Unlike her usual tendency to choose somebody older, Julia chose someone her age, a first year Slytherin by the name of Livia Machavariani. Thankfully, in contrast to the other moderators she had worked with, Livia seemed quite pleased to have the opportunity to moderate their duel. She didn't know much about the girl, but, if Julia's instincts were correct, she concluded that, if the need should arise, Livia would be kind enough to assist them to the Hospital wing, and so when she walked into the duelling room the next day morning, she found Livia already waiting with Cirrus as they got ready for the duel.

● ● ● ● ●

The familiar aura of the Duelling room sank into Julia as she got ready feeling right at home. Her thoughts wandered back to the few duels he had done before. Some had been won, and others lost, but she didn't mind. It was all part of the game, and if she was to join the duelling team, she was going to have to get used to it. Julia had put herself on the waitlist for Ravenclaw's duelling team quite a while back, and was really hoping to get a chance to be part. Therefore, she had been duelling as practice ever since. She took a deep breath and shifted her focus back to the present. Cirrus and Julia stood on opposite ends of the pise, both in their duelling stance. Julia did a quick survey of her surroundings. The room had never failed to make itself known as a duelling room. Heavy oak doors marked the entrance, on the rightmost side, bolted into the stone wall, was an iron placard reciting the rules and etiquette of the sport, upon entering she saw an enormous open room, its high ceiling illuminated by floating candles. Stone tiles made up the flooring, complete with a few cracks, no doubt from the years and years of duelling that had taken place. “As I trust you are aware, this is a friendly duel. You are to abide by the rules of the piste – only the use of legal spells, body-blocking and dodging are allowed. You may not engage in mundane violence, nor may you use potions or illegal spells. Once you are ready, please take your places on the piste so that we may begin – and may fortune give you favour.” Livia said, greeting them with a nod. Julia smiled as the duel began, and spoke only loud enough for Cirrus to hear “May the best dueller win,” Julia spoke with the utmost determination and courage. She could only hope to live up to her tone. She had a duel to win.

Cirrus had no clue why she agreed to this; she was the farthest thing from a physical person. She was quiet, thinking and feeling, fighting was never a concept that ever crossed her mind. The closest she ever got to fighting was when her brother would aggravate her and initiated some old school roughhousing amongst siblings. Fighting with magic was a whole different ballpark, especially given her muggle upbringing. She knew a few spells but that was about it… she was not at all mentally equipped for this, she only agreed because she didn't want to seem rude in any circumstance and decline Julia's request.

Cirrus' opponent nor the moderator were people she knew well, only adding to her anxieties as she took her position and readied her wand with a shaky hand she attempted to hide. She couldn't focus on anything else in the room right now, Livia's words almost travelling through hollow ears as Cirrus tried to formulate a plan here, her mind blanking as she recalled all of the spells she knew and which she should use first. She knew she'd have to make a decision soon when Julia spoke. "May the best dueller win," Cirrus was certain that it was not her...

Cirrus could never match Julia's confidence but despite her overall negativity about this predicament, she did acknowledge the fact that it was her first duel. No one said she had to be perfect. But she would choose to reflect on it in a positive light at a later date, she had to focus on the now. The duel had begun.

It did not appear that Livia would need to elaborate upon the rules of engagement; thus, she stepped back and was content to watch the other individuals fling spells at one another. For a moment, she debated providing much-unasked-for commentary, as the official duelling referees often did, but she decided to just watch in silence.

Julia attempted a flipendo, and although the cast was successful, Cirrus's evasion was far better honed than Julia's accuracy. The Hufflepuff darted out of the way of the damaging spell with ease, prompting a nod of appreciation from Livia. Often, the first lesson of duelling was that avoiding being hit in the first place was of the utmost importance; it seemed Cirrus had learned this.

Julia, however, might have not. Livia did not react with anything akin to empathy when she watched Cirrus's tarantallegra crash into the Ravenclaw. She lifted her eyebrows as Julia's feet began to move in the quick pattern of a jive, which simply appeared incorrect without a partner. The girl would appear a bit winded as she moved, too; the spell had certainly packed a punch. Unbeknownst to any of them, its effects would linger; it had been a particularly strong tarantallegra indeed.

𝕴f she could, she would've trash talked Cirrus, only her legs were to busy dancing. Cirrus had evaded Julia's Flipendo, and her Tarantallegra had hit Julia just fine. She clenched her fist and grit her teeth, trying to remain calm. It looked like she would be dancing for a while. Why? How was it that she never had, to date gotten a spell hit in the first round? Thanks a lot Mooney. At least she knew one thing – when lunch came, the food would be gone fast. Taking a deep breath, she racked her brains for what spell to use, it seemed like Cirrus was doing the same. Livia hadn't said anything yet, so Julia assumed round 2 had started. Whatever she did, it had to hurt. Or so she thought. A spell creeped up in her mind. Did it have to hurt? Or did it have to damage? The Ravenclaw had some newfound hope as she waited for cirrus to cast. The moment the spell's incantation left cirrus' mouth, Julia wand went up in a dueling stance, and in a split second she decided and casted. Smirking, she watched the spell hoping she made the right choice. No choice was easy, but the reward of a right one, was always nice.

Cirrus was amazed in both herself and her own luck. She’d no clue how she’d managed to dodge that Flippendo, her evasion being an extension of her avoidance of people - a pure instinct. Either way, it worked, and she could only hope she’d be able to do it again. Then, when her own spell managed to hit Julia? Double amazed. She had very little faith in herself going into this duel, quite sure that she was going to suffer an awful defeat. But now, she had a little bit leverage, and she knew Julia had to be vexed. Internally, she felt bad, but she knew that there was no room to hesitate during combat.

As such, Cirrus remained vigilant, knowing that this duel was certainly not over after just the first round. Just because she got lucky this one time did not guarantee her victory. And she knew that if she got too excited by her initial stroke of luck, then she’d only screw herself over in the end. Remaining calm and collected, she had to focus and think of another spell to use. She gave both her own and Julia's next cast a moment of thought, trying to predetermine what would happen next and how to plan ahead, knowing her opponent would be resilient. Hoping to get lucky again, she cast.

Whatever Livia had expected from refereeing a duel, it was not this. She observed quietly, relegating herself to the sidelines, her cool green gaze raking over the duellists in question as if she might reap information from them. What she desired to see was blatant skill, talent showcased unapologetically. That, at least, would have been helpful to her; she had, after all, made plenty of mistakes. What not to do was not something of which she required a reminder.

Both individuals thought it keen to attempt the same spell. Incendio, though rather basic, could, when performed correctly, be perfectly useful. Fire could both damage and disadvantage an opponent, shifting the tides of Fortuna's whims. However, although Julia's cast was successful, her aim flew far; Livia even found herself moving to avoid any stray flames. She did not speak of the matter, still keen to quietly observe, although she now thought critique could be useful.

Then, Cirrus attempted to cast the same spell, and it backfired cleanly. Livia lifted her eyebrows, watching the other student catch fire. The flames enveloped the Hufflepuff, the spell quite strong despite its unintended target. It now appeared that Cirrus was worse-off than Julia – the tides could shift quickly, indeed.

Well, this certainly was not good...

Cirrus managed to cast a particularly powerful Incendio, only she must've lost focus for a split second as her spell horribly backfired and she was the one who was lit aflame instead of Julia. She squeaked as she frantically tried patting out the flames, but to no avail. This was definitely not good. This is what she gets for thinking she'd have even an ounce of fun with this, or that she had a chance to begin with. 'May the best dueller win' just seemed like a nasty taunt now and a vibrant redness that wasn't from the flames creeped up her neck. She's definitely going to need new robes... and some bandages for her dignity.

Cirrus knew the extinguishing spell, but could she afford to waste a turn and give Julia the opportunity to deal more damage? The fire would go out on its own and it wasn't that bad, right? But now she was scared to cast another spell for fear it would backfire on her again. This was a terrible moment for her natural indecisiveness to surface, and it was only amplified from all the overwhelming sensations in her environment. She had to calm down and think.

Cirrus took deep breaths and focused as she made a crucial decision. Hoping with all of her being that it would work this time, she cast her next spell.

𝕴t looked as though the favour of the duel, might be, slowly, turning towards her. Julia had casted Incendio, but as always her aim had been poor, meaning Cirrus evaded it. Cirrus too, tried the fire spell but it miraculously backfired, hitting her instead. Julia watched, a little shell-shocked as the Huffle squeaked, hopelessly patting the flames. Was this the same girl who had hit her with a near perfect Tarantallegra? She couldn't help but think about it. The Ravenclaw wondered if using this condition to her advantage. Maybe Cirrus would waste a round casting the Extinguishing charm, and not having a high guard. But that seemed unlikely, by the looks of it, Cirrus would only be aflame a round, wasting the opportunity to strike, wouldn't have been the popular decision, and so Julia's thoughts moved to the question of her spell choice. She had to disbalance Cirrus, catch her off-guard. But she would also be wasting a good attacking chance. She looked down at her wand studying it as though it held the world's answers. Finally, she looked up and once more took her duelling stance, not waiting a second longer. Julia lifted her wand and striked. Happy with her choice

This round would prove to be more fruitful than the last, at least for Cirrus. She opted to cast a Levitation Charm, an interesting strategic choice that caught Livia's attention when the incantation was uttered. She eyed the Hufflepuff, her green gaze almost catlike, as, this time, the spell succeeded. The cast, directed at Julia, soundly hit its mark despite functional evasive abilities on the Ravenclaw's end. Perhaps even better for Cirrus was that the flames upon her slowly sputtered out; certainly, that would prove a boon moving forward.

Where Cirrus had attempted to bounce back from the previous mistake, Julia seemed keen on maintaining her advantage. She cast a Green Sparks Charm – this, too, was a spell Livia had not often seen utilised in duelling. Now the duo had her true, proper focus. Her lips curved upwards just slightly as the spell's telltale sparks flashed in Cirrus's face. Yes – although perhaps not the strongest spell, it appeared to serve its function well; Livia doubted Cirrus would have clear vision for a few moments.

It was only now that she had words for the two duellists. 'Interesting choice of tactics. You are both performing quite well; do persevere.'

With that said, she once again retreated into the perspective of a dutiful onlooker, although she was, of course, poised to intervene should the duel come to a swift end. Perhaps one day, she would have swift mastery of rennervate, but as it was today, that was not the case.
