Seeing Eyes

| xxx | It had been a long time since Jay had been in England. This time, she was here with her mother and one of her brothers, Alex on one of her mom's business trips for the ministry of magic. Jay had forgotten how different England was from the coast of Maine. The smells and sounds were all so different, in the city, the loud bustling streets, were crowded and hard to weave through, were as in Maine, the tight nit towns are familiar and easy to navigate. The only good thing that came of the trip to London was the promise to finally--after much begging-- a pet. Jay had been asking for ages, and now her pestering had finally payed off! The air was warm and dry, and a little breeze played across her face as Jay pushed open the door to "Magical Menagerie." Immediately new smells washed over her: owl feathers, cat fur, and even old documents. She could hear frogs chirping to one another in all different tones, and snakes slithering across the floors of their cages. Alex--whom she had only just remembered was there--steered her by the shoulder over to what she assumed was the circulation desk, because Alex started to speak. An aged male voice responded to Alex in a kind tone, "A cat for the young miss you say?" His words were laced with a heavy British accent. "Right this way." Jay let Alex lead her around to the back of the room, were the smell of cat was strongest. Jay put her hand out to feel the cage. The bars were cold mettle. The top was open-- Jay guessed it was the man's doing-- and she carefully reached into the cage. She felt her hand connect with long, soft fur. She expected the cat to recoil and hiss in annoyance or fear, but no, it rubbed its head agents her hand and purred. She felt his wet nose on her fingers as he weaved in between them. The cat was quite small, probably no older than a kitten. Why was it so friendly? Maybe it's just a British-cat thing... "This one." Jay said, turning to her brother and petting the cat. "Yes, I like that one too," he said in a very adultish manner that he only used when he wanted to sound impotent. A giggle slipped from Jay's lips but she covered it quickly with a small cough. "A fine choice!" Said the man. "His name is Billie, though you can call him whatever you wish." He added. "I think I like it," Jay said picking up the cat. "It suits him well." she grinned. | xxx |
