Poppy's personality is best described through her background. Born to parents Alistair and Celeste Grimsbane, she is the fifth of seven children.

In a family so big, where one can easily get lost in the daily grind of farm life and hard work, it was difficult for her to stand out from the crowd. She was the quiet one, the dependable one, the one who remained out with her father on his tractor long after her other siblings had had enough. Poppy had never been scared to get dirty, fixated more on receiving the approval of her father and mother. She helped in their wheat and oat fields, inside their barn, out with the cows and sheep, and in the kitchen – wherever she might earn for herself a "good job, Poppy".

She always enjoyed being out in the fields, feeling the wind whipping through her hair or darting down to the sea with her brothers and sisters. She also enjoyed climbing onto the top of the barn to gain a feeling of being on top of the world.

Around the age of six, she displayed her first instance of magic, alerting her family to the fact that she was “different”.

It was the beginning of the end in such a puritanical family. A witch in their house – the very practice of magic – could only be the work of the devil. The family was deeply religious and even more deeply sceptical of the 'strange' or 'unnatural'.

Her parents worked fiercely to make her “suppress her magic”, trying everything from praise and rewards to punishments that would make even the most stubborn of children yield. They believed that, as nothing else had happened since that day, their efforts were bearing fruit.

When her Hogwarts letter came, her mother wept bitterly for days, realising they had lost the fight and their daughter entirely. At first, they attempted to ignore and even burn the letters but when the fifth owl came, they relented grudgingly to “protect the rest of their children” as they feared things might escalate.

It was around this time that the dynamic between her and her siblings (Rowan, Evelyn, Thorne, Isla, Jasper and Seraphina) began to shift. They grew fearful or jealous – sometimes both – and began excluding her around the farmhouse.

She has since become conflicted about her magical identity and what it might mean for her in the only world she's ever known (the Muggle world).

In late August, the family received news of the death of her uncle (her father's brother) and his wife. This left her cousin, Emil Roan, orphaned, at which point the state began procedures to establish guardianship through her parents. Prior, the family had very little contact with the uncle because of his wife, who her parents said "carried something evil" within her.

Poppy's first instance of magic, at the age of six, was quite remarkable and terrifying all at once. She and her older sisters, Evelyn and Isla, were in the family's barn playing make-believe once they had completed their day of chores. The children had grown excitable at the story they were piecing together, becoming more and more animated with each moment. Poppy, in particular, had grown overly excited, subconsciously willing it all to be real with childhood imagination. She wanted to be in that garden Evelyn described, and imagined herself surrounded by such beauty. In the moment, there was nothing she wanted more, and that want manifested.

Then the flowers began to sprout all over the barn floor. Out of nowhere, a mini garden sprang forth, fitting perfectly with the story her eldest sister had proposed while frightening both girls enough to send them running back into the house to get their mother.

Poppy was delighted at first, not at all wondering where the flowers may have come from or having an inclination that she'd been the one to do it. After all, in her mind, something as abstract as intent could never make something real. She'd simply been having fun with her sisters and had begun to vividly imagine the tales her sister told her without ever knowing that that could be enough for a girl like her.

Their mother banned them all from the barn for a month after that, unable to explain the phenomenon and suspicious that something dark was afoot.
