Once Upon a Bedtime

Kennedy and her younger sister Mayah dashed up the stairs two steps at a time. Kennedy had longer legs and made it to their shared room first, and threw open the door. The girls then proceeded to jump in their beds, and pull their covers all the way up to their chins. Not too far behind were their parents. Their father sat on the edge of Kennedy's bed, and their mom snuggled in with Mayah.
"Can you tell us a bed time story?" Kennedy asked, glancing over at Mayah as they giggled. The girls knew what story was coming, it was the same one their parents told everynight. Their parents shared a knowing smile before their father spoke.
"I think that sounds alright. Once upon a time there was a fairy-"
"No not that one!" Mayah squealed
"Hmm, another one then, Once upon a time there was a princess-"
"No dad, the real one!" Kennedy begged.
"Fine fine, if that's what you want." And their father settled in to tell the story
"Once upon a time, there was a young man of 16, who had thought he knew everything in the world as one often does at his age. He volunteered at the local pet shelter, and one day the most stunning young woman came to the shelter with an odd request. 'Have you seen an owl?' She asked, beside herself. 'I know I shouldn't have tried to turn his feathers blue, but it seemed like a great idea at the time. He got offended and ran off, and I need that darn owl.' The boy was dumbstruck, he had never know anyone who owned an owl, or who had tried to dye an animal blue. 'N-no, not that I've seen, but I can keep a look out for him?' 'Thank you so much, I ought to get going now, but thank you!' She turned and headed back out. 'Wait, shouldn't you leave your numbe-'the boy called, but the girl had already left. He had no idea how he was supposed to contact her if by some miracle the owl did show up. To the boys surprise, later that week an owl showed up, pecking on the window. He let the owl drink water and eat some of the canary food, and then let it rest on a perch. He just had to figure out how to contact the girl again, except the next day the owl was gone, with no sight of where he went."
The girls mom picked up the story,
"The girl who owned the owl was actually a magical girl who went to a magic school, and her owl had gladly returned to her. Even though she had her feathered friend back, she couldn't stop thinking about the boy her age from the pet shelter. So she used her owl to send him a letter. And that was just the beginning, the two began to meet up all the time in different places. The girl's friends often questioned where she went, but she never told anyone. The two dated for several years until they were both 18, then the meetings became less and less frequent. The boy questioned the girl why she was never around anymore, she only shook her head and didn't give an answer. She didn't know how to tell him that she was magical, or how he would react to it. But then one day the boy spoke up, 'Listen Hallie, I love you, and I don't know whats been up with you lately, but I do know that I want to spend my entire life with you. Will you marry me?' And the boy got down on one knee with a small ring which was a big expense compared to his little income. The girl didn't know what to say, and she started crying. Even though she hadn't been the best girlfriend lately, he still loved her. Unable to keep her secret to herself any longer, she told him everything."
Their father took over the story again for the final stretch,
"To her surprise, the boy didn't mind at all, and it even made him like her even more. So the couple got married 6 months later, and the two lived happily ever after."
Their parents shared a look, a look that was filled with such pure love and adoration, but Kennedy would know how much it meant till she fell in love one day.
