@Luca Corranado
It had been near three weeks since Harvey had bid farewell to his friend Luca after they shared a ride home upon the Hogwarts Express. It was summer break after their first year of magical schooling and the pacing of Harvey's life had surely not slowed down one bit. There were social events to attend, private lessons with his caretaker, remedial courses in Herbology with the local potioneer, not to mention the countless trips the boy was expected to take while he accompanied his grandfather on business. While Harvey's schedule had been filled for him for the remainder of the summer, he was at least granted one free weekend to host a friend. At first his grandfather had protested. Plenty of time for friends during the school year he had argued, but when Harvey explained who would be attending, his grandfather's tone had shifted drastically.

The owls would have arrived at the Corranado Manor as the two caretakers exchanged correspondence and took care of all of the arrangements. The mention of that surname had perked his grandfather's interest as he approved of Harvey's budding friendship with the Corranado boy. Good stock it how he had described it. Apparently his grandfather had indeed conducted business with Luca's mother before, so increasing the ties between the two families proved useful enough to allow Harvey a night to host his friend and now the time had come.

Harvey would be waiting near the entrance of their townhome as the time of Luca's arrival drew near. The home itself was magically tucked away in a high end muggle neighborhood near Diagon Alley. With a little assistance from Luca's caretaker or parent and the entrance would make itself known. Harvey had chosen a more casual attire for the day, thought his definition of the word would probably be quite different than those that considered sweatsuits appropriate attire outside of the gym. A maroon turtle neck sweater and black slacks had him feeling rather comfortable.

When Luca did arrive he would be escorted into the foyer to be greeted by Harvey. The space was surely smaller than a manor's entrance, but every detail of the home was obviously dripping in wealth. The ceilings were high, the floors immaculately laid marble. The furniture and wall details all handmade by the finest goblin craftsmen. "Luca, thank you for coming." A formal handshake would begin their day.

Guided by his caretaker nanny, Lilliana, Luca walked quietly through the high-end Muggle neighborhood. He took in the finer points of this neighborhood, knowing very little of muggles himself. The Corranado boy then took in the entrance to the Barrows’ home, concealed from Muggle eyes. “This is your summer vacation, Luca. Do remember to have a good time with Harvey,” the soft voice came as Lilliana leaned down towards Luca. The boy nodded with a short smile as she stood up, following a light peck on his cheek, which made Luca grumble slightly.

The woman took a small piece of parchment from her pocket and read it, looking at the seemingly empty space. After a light touch of a certain statute that appeared to be in the middle of nowhere, Luca was briefly taken aback as the door to Harvey Barrows’ home revealed itself. The boy started to catalogue the family’s attention and approach to security and discretion. This was the boy’s first sensory experience with the Barrows family, and it did not disappoint.

Stepping inside the foyer, the young wizard noted that it was a bit small but no less dripping with indications of the family’s wealth. Harvey had shown his hand early—seeing it confirmed in every corner of the foyer was no surprise. He took mental note of the marble floors, the high ceilings, and the goblin craftsmanship that was evident throughout the entryway. The whole of the Barrows home seemed smaller than Corranado Manor, but deliberately furnished and decorated in every detail. He noted that goblin artisans traditionally worked underground—a tighter space suited them.

Luca stood before Harvey, dressed in his own understated fashion. He wore a crisp, pale dress shirt, dark trousers, a lightweight charcoal blazer, and Oxford shoes. The boy also had a magical timepiece on his wrist, passed down to him from his father, which was visible only because his hand was slightly in a pocket of his dark trousers. As his mother’s attention to detail came to light, the Corranado boy nodded approvingly at the Barrows boy before reaching out to receive the handshake firmly. He barely noticed his caretaker disappear behind him as the door closed to begin his night at the Barrows estate. Luca’s father showed through in his firm handshake with direct eye contact.

“Thank you for having me, Harvey. I look forward to whatever you have planned for us,” Luca said with a warm smile.

It was every magical family’s duty to make sure they did their part to uphold the statute of secrecy that was the bedrock of modern Wizarding law. Larnak the Lender did his part to uphold this, but his security protocols went above and beyond hiding their residence. Inside the home were countless goblin artifacts that were not only worth a fortune, but also carried significant cultural value to goblin-kind. His personal library could easily serve as a history museum for Larnak’s clan with certain prices dating back centuries. Not to mention the healthy stack of galleons locked away in his home vault. Never keep all of your wealth in one spot, the old goblin always preached. Needless to say, security at the home was top notch.

A bit of a sly smile crept its way across Harvey’s lips as he watched Luca take in the residence. The part-goblin wasn’t shy about flaunting his family’s wealth. Big bait catches big fish. You didn’t need to brag, but certain flaunts here and there would let those around you know your status. Harvey had little interest in those that came from mundane families unless there was special talent present. Why waste the time otherwise? He would be a part of the next generation that would inherit wealth and power from their families. Securing connections with peers of the same ilk was of the upmost importance. Exactly the reason why Luca was here today. At least it helped that Harvey actually liked the other boy.

When the pair exchanged proper handshakes, Harvey would eye the time piece on Luca’s wrist. “Oh, look at that. Heirloom?” It surely looked that way and was the perfect segue into their first activity. “Come this way. I want to show you some of our family’s work. If you’re not bothered by it I told Burok that we would not need a formal dinner tonight.” Surely the two of them could skip yet another stuffy evening full of boring chatter and his grandfather’s ramblings. “I figured a charcuterie board and some refreshments later. I’ll have her whip you up a sandwich or the like if you need something more substantial.” Harvey would direct Luca out of the foyer and up the stairs.

As they ascended Luca would begin to see magical portraits of his extended goblin family. Some ancient like his great-great grandfather, Lazloc the Hammer. Some more modern like his auntie Grocklo. Eventually they would reach a grand door with no handles. Harvey would place his hand flat where the knob should be and soon after many interior locks would begin to unlatch. When the door swung open Luca would be met with a treasure trove of goblin artifacts. Along the walls were pieces of armor and weaponry all made of the finest silvers from the most prestigious clans across the United Kingdom. In the center of the room was a many sided display case full of rings, necklaces and other jewelry. “Take a look!”

Luca looked down at the family heirloom adorning his wrist as Harvey questioned it curiously. The boy’s thoughts wandered back to when his father presented him with the watch the day after he received his Hogwarts letter. Time is the one thing that cannot be inherited, Luca—only spent. Spend it wisely, his father said to him when the watch was passed on. “It is. When my father gave me this, he said time was the one thing that could not be inherited and that I should spend it wisely. That always resonated with me,” Luca said as the boys stared at the magical timepiece on his wrist.

The reunion quickly moved on to a mention of a lack of formal dinner, which was more than suitable for Luca. He expected to come to Harvey’s house to spend some time with his friend without having to be extremely formal. He thought for a moment about how he could easily represent the Corranado family name without unnecessary ceremony. “No, that is fine with me. I enjoy a good cheeseboard. Will I get to meet Burok while I am here?” the Slytherin asked. He had heard a bit about him from Harvey, so he was analytically curious.

As they ascended the stairs towards their first activity for the weekend, Luca noted the portraits lining the walls. His home had a similar setup, but he noted the portraits were mostly Goblins. He found himself searching the portraits for the goblin lineage that explained Harvey. Perhaps he would ask the boy about this later, but he noted the presence of ancient and modern side by side. Luca read the names as they walked by, to show respect for the display of lineage and legacy.

Watching as Harvey placed a flat hand against the door where a knob should have been, Luca was quietly pleased at the fancy mechanism that unlocked the door. He took a small step back to take the movements in with analytical interest. The boy would make a note to his father about their security-conscious ways, deeming it something he could do to improve Corranado Manor. Lilliana had told him a bit about the magical protections they had in place, mostly for precaution, but he had never seen any of them at work.

As they stepped into the artifact room, Luca kept his expression tight but was impressed with the display. This room would be the stuff of dreams for muggles and wizards alike, but for families such as the Corranados and the Barrows, it was old hat. However, Goblins kept their treasures close and tangible in a way wizarding families rarely did. Nevertheless, the boy noted this as confirmation of the Barrows family's standing and connections.

“Very impressive, Harvey. I can only imagine the stories behind these pieces. Tell me about your favorite one,” Luca asked, genuinely curious.

Harvey arched an eyebrow as Luca spoke of his watch. The lesson that came with it perhaps as valuable as the jewelry itself. Although they were still just boys, the two of them were almost destined to carry on their family’s legacy. With this burden came the weight of the choices that they would make as they continued their education and then began their careers. Each one of these decisions would take time to consider, time to execute and time to see what consequences came of them whether they be successes or failures. These moments would become the ones that defined their lives and as Luca’s father emphasized, you don’t get any of it back. “A lesson well learned. No time like the present to start making it count, yes?”

Harvey was pleased that Luca welcomed a bit of an informal evening. While they could certainly fill the hours with pomp and circumstance, he did hope to get to know Luca on more of a friendly level. They would have plenty for the formalities throughout their lives, but he would need a core group of allies to achieve his goals and Harvey hoped to count the other boy as one of them. A mere acquaintance would simply not do. “Oh yes, she will be tending to our needs this evening, but I’m afraid she’s rather strict about the formalities, so I wouldn’t expect the most thrilling conversation from her. She does keep this whole place running though.” Harvey wasn’t shy about praising his caretaker. Who knows how he’d have shaped up without her.

As the pair ascended further into the home, Harvey would glance back at Luca. One, to make sure his friend was making his way alright. Two, to judge the expression on his face as Luca observed his home. The Corranado boy had never shown a moment of hesitation when it came to Harvey’s mixed heritage, but to be in the home of a goblin could very well have come as a culture shock. Judging by how he admired the portraits though it would seem Luca was the real deal.

The artifact room would amaze some that were only used to seeing such things either in a museum or perhaps a photo from a textbook or the like. To the upper crust of Wizarding society? It was more about flaunting your position. In Larnak’s home though it was a little of both. It served as a showroom or little Harvey would never have been given access, but it was also very secure. As Luca observed it was unlike Goblins to be too far from their treasures.

“Ah, my favorite.” Harvey wouldn’t hesitate for a moment before guiding them towards the various pieces of armor lining the walls. “Look here, this one.” His long index finger would guide Luca’s gaze toward a seemingly simple piece of goblin silver. Yet in the center of the chest plate four gems were socketed into the metal. “The metal work is superb if not a bit basic, but the magic in those gems are what makes it special. Enchanted to boost the wearers natural abilities. Spells hit with more effect, your strength enhanced. Very powerful I must say.”

Harvey allowed Luca a moment to take it all in. Soon enough though Harvey would retrieve a ring box from one of the work desks. “Luca, I would like to present you with a gift. A token of my family’s appreciation for you being here today and a gesture towards our hopefully long lasting friendship.” The words were a bit practiced, but Harvey still meant them. Inside the box, Luca would find a ring of goblin silver. The band was the body of two snakes, with the heads of those snakes forming the socket for a gem of yellow topaz. Two Slytherins now bonded, the gemstone a common representation of loyalty and friendship. “To our future.”

The Corranado heir listened to Harvey describe Burok, and she sounded very similar to his nanny, but with a little less personality. Lillianna tended to Luca’s needs throughout his childhood and enforced the formalities when warranted, but otherwise, she was counted among Luca’s best friends. Compared to others, Lillianna was capable of keeping the Corranado Manor running while also keeping her charge entertained at a very young age. The young witch could be credited with raising Luca, but this was not without the much-needed contributions from his mother. Nevertheless, he was quietly interested in meeting Harvey’s caretaker.

“Very powerful, indeed. Was this worn by one of your ancestors? The enchantment properties make this piece most interesting,” the Slytherin said as he took a few steps forward to analyze the chest piece more closely. He hoped to join the Viridian Vipers next year, which would help him hone his combat abilities. Still, it had only dawned on him that magically enhanced pieces may also serve him in his chosen career. Hearing confirmation that such pieces existed at least in goblin culture was genuinely interesting to him, and he filed the detail away carefully.

Luca heard the faint sound of a box being lifted from a desk, which drew him back to the moment. He turned to Harvey, who had a small ring box in his hand. After the words from his friend, Luca opened the box and looked down at the ring for a moment. He took in the details after pulling it out and placing the ring between his thumb and index fingers. The Slytherin took a brief moment and noticed the most significant details and what they meant: two Slytherins, two families, their ambitions intertwined but distinct. Another note was that it was goblin silver, and not something everyone had the opportunity to own.

“To our future, Harvey—and the wisdom to build it well,” Luca responded as he slid the ring on his right pinky finger. The Corranado boy thought he was doing his father proud by spending his time forming a lasting friendship with someone of Harvey’s reputation. Equally, he genuinely enjoyed spending time with the boy. With the same hand, Luca offered Harvey a firm handshake before asking.

“What else do you have in store for me, friend?” he said.

Their caretakers may receive some credit from the boys when they looked back on how their lives were shaped, but they certainly wouldn't go down in the records of family history. It was an unfair position to be in. The servants of these powerful families were often the glue that held these households together. They scheduled, instructed, nourished and raised these young boys and while that gave them proximity to power, it still never seemed like enough considering the work they put in. At least in Larnak's tribe it was considered a high honor to be enlisted to such a lineage. Most likely one of the highest positions a low-born Goblin could achieve, but it still left Harvey questioning the morality of it all. Perhaps he would change things when he took over the house or maybe that was just his human side being too sensitive? Thoughts for another time.

"Ah, yes. Worn by Harnum the Fierce. An expert warrior by all accounts. Served during the Goblin Rebellions of 1752. The piece has been handed down from one generation to the next ever since as a testament to the tribe's crafting ability." Harvey offered a brief history lesson of his people. He had no aspirations of becoming a master smith, but he would tutor in the craft and hoped to be able to produce effective armor and jewelry. Maybe one day he would present his ally with something of his own making.

A rare, genuine smile spread across Harvey's lips when Luca examined the gift. It was his hope that this visit would help bolster the bond between the boys as well as offer a physical token to represent their alliance. Their handshake cemented this. "Well said, Luca." It was time to end the tour of their personal vault and move on with their day. "Let us move further upstairs. I'll show you my bedroom and Burok will provide us will some refreshments."

Harvey would guide Luca out of the vault and up another set of stairs. All along the way the wealth of the family would continue to be on display. No corner forgotten or space left unused. Soon enough he would guide them through the door of Harvey's personal quarters. The size of the bedroom was a thing of dreams for most people their age. There was a living space with couch, chairs and table. A sleeping area that held a bed worth more than some people's monthly salary and a work area too for Harvey to practice his potion and spell work. Of course the last corner of the space was lined floor to ceiling with books and an immaculate desk for the boy to work on his summer assignments and pen his correspondences. "Let's take up in the chairs here."

Not but a moment later a gentle knock on the door would announce the arrival of Burok. The white haired goblin would enter, behind her floated a silver platter full of fine meats and cheeses along with crystal pitchers of water and fresh squeezed juice. "Master Barrows, Master Corranado." She offered a courteous bow. "Hello, Burok. Thank you." His caretaker guided the food and beverage down onto the table before them with a flick of her index finger. "I've been told that you will not be attending dinner this evening. However, a simple charcuterie platter will not be a substitute for a proper meal. Plates will be sent up later." The tone in which she spoke left no room for argument and Harvey had long ago learned not to when Burok provided instruction. "Very well. That will be all for now."

The goblin nodded, turned and left for now. Harvey busied himself setting up a couple plates for them and let Luca take his pick of beverage. After a few nibbles he would address his friend. "So, how has your summer lessons been going, Luca? I'm afraid mine started with remedial herbology lessons, but I will begin metal working theory with Burok and my grandfather soon as well as the basics in wandless magic techniques." It would still be some time before he started the practical work of either field, but Harvey was excited to get started.

The Corranado heir listened as Harvey provided historical context to the piece worn by Harnum the Fierce. As the half-goblin boy spoke, Luca’s peripheral vision took note of Lorenzo Corranado’s watch adorning his wrist. It was a different style of craftsmanship when compared to an expertly crafted piece of magically enhanced armor, but each family having a piece of history passed down through the generations spoke volumes about that family’s reach. The Slytherin’s thoughts turned to the other historical pieces at Corranado Manor, but he noted the stark difference in their styles. The Barrows family heirlooms included weapons and armor, a testament to the oppression the Goblin people endured, while the Corranado family had artifacts of a different purpose. “And the piece has held up this well after two centuries? That is beyond impressive,” the wizard commented during the brief pause in Harvey’s history lesson.

He then followed his friend after a gesture welcoming him to lead the way, in part to be polite but also because he truly had no idea where he was going. Luca took note of the display of wealth, mentally filing away that no space was left unused, and, while this was not how his family decorated, he took note of how every culture was different. “Very comfortable,” the Slytherin said as he sat in one of the lush chairs that Harvey motioned towards. No sooner than the words left his lips, Burok came in with the promised charcuterie board and presented it to them politely. Luca stayed quiet and let Harvey speak, as he was much more familiar with her, but Luca did give her a polite “Thank you” before she left. While rank did not excuse discourtesy, there was no call for being dismissive or rude. The boy had been raised far better than that.

Once Burok left the room, Corranado took a moment to take in the room. While his room was equally impressive, he noted a few subtle differences in Harvey’s room that lent to his goblin roots. Luca did not shy away from differences as his father had taught him, because they played a large role in his success. Every room you walk into will have someone different from you in it. Learn them before you dismiss them—they may be the most valuable person there, the Corranado heir remembered his father saying.

After analyzing most of the room, this use of brain power left Luca parched and hungry. He took a beat to notice how he wasn’t doing anything overtly mature or productive, but he was being a 12-year-old boy hanging out in a friend’s room. While he appreciated furthering his goals and making his parents proud, the Slytherin did not forget the wise words of his own caretaker. The strategies will wait. The summers will not, Lilliana would say when Luca focused too much on studies over the summer.

“With Lilliana’s help, I have focused on spell theory and wandwork refinement. She knows I want to make it onto the dueling team next year. I’ve been doing a lot of reading in Defense Against the Dark Arts, too,” Luca said in response to Harvey’s question. He then smiled when the Barrows boy mentioned metalworking. “That all sounds exciting. I know you’re looking forward to metalworking. Speaking of that, I hope it isn’t too personal, but were you raised by your grandfather? What happened to your birth parents?” the Slytherin asked. He noted that it was a heavy question, but he wanted to get to know his friend.

"It is rather impressive, I agree." Harvey had no problem with boasting, but it also spoke to the proud traditions of his goblin family. "My grandfather's people have a unique view on ownership. You may have heard before about how they believe that even if a piece is purchased by another the true owner will always be the one that created it. Harnum may be a very distant relative, but his blood runs through grandfather and I. By that extension this piece is as much ours as anyone else's. It's an honor to care for it." Some of what Harvey spoke was just reiterating what his grandfather had drilled into him, but deep down inside there was a spark of pride in his goblin heritage. He would always be a person that stemmed from two different identities. Time would tell if one eventually outweighed the other.

As the pair moved upstairs Harvey would set a leisurely pace. It wasn't an attempt to one up his friend as they passed lavish decorations and displays of wealth. He knew well that Luca came from a family just as influential of not more than his own, but it was a chance for the other Slytherin to make note of their similarities and differences. If one day they were to remain allies, finding a balance between the two would be essential in forming a powerful partnership. When they finally entered Harvey's room it would please him that his friend found the accommodations comfortable. It pleased him even further when he showed Burok nothing but the upmost respect. Not that Harvey expected anything less, but it was nice that he showed acceptance to the other magical beings of their world.

Harvey busied himself with a plate of food and a cup of juice. The savory offerings of the world were his delights as he began to nibble of the dried meats and fine cheeses and for that moment he finally relaxed into his chair. As much as these gatherings were formal and important in crafting his future, sometimes boys must just be boys. They should speak on what excites them, gripe about what displeases them. Laugh and make silly jokes and as Luca's questions became deeper, get to know each other in a meaningful way.

The boy nodded along as Luca spoke of preparing for an attempt at the dueling team in their second year. Harvey really should round out his education by adding more extracurriculars like sports, but the very thought of it made him cringe. Getting hurt on purpose? No thank you. Then the conversation would shift to a topic that was oh so familiar. Anyone that got to know the boy would eventually realize the lack parental figures in his life. His mother Harriet was here and played a role, if not a limited one Harvey's life, but his father? Still a mystery to this day. "Yes, Burok and my grandfather raised me. My mother lives here with us too, but her health has always been poor unfortunately. She does what she cans when she is well enough. My father?" Harvey shrugged in a way that gestured he was not too bothered by what he was about to say. "I've never known him."

Harvey waited to judge how Luca would respond to that. Prestigious families often tried to hide such family drama or that fact that Harvey was born out of wedlock. In fact his whole life very well could have been different if Larnak had ever fathered a son of his own. Like it or not, Harvey was his only chance at a male heir.

Luca’s mind actively processed the differences between how Italian-American and British wizarding heritage and Goblin heritage viewed the concept of ownership. The concept of ownership between wizarding and Muggle culture was different enough, but the Corranado heir had not considered how ownership might differ across magical cultures. After a time, he quietly filed it away as a fundamental difference in world view between the two cultures. This was what the Slytherin valued the most in his new friendship with the half-Goblin: learning, as the boy was a student long before he attended Hogwarts. Nevertheless, the Corranado boy nodded along as he actively listened to Harvey.

“Did something happen to him?” Luca asked with measured concern. The way he shrugged off the question of his father after explaining that Burok and his grandfather were his primary caretakers did not make it clear whether his father’s reputation had a positive or negative connotation. This added to the list of differences between Luca and Harvey, but both boys seemed to celebrate differences rather than shy away from them. There could have been many reasons Harvey never knew his father, and Luca would never learn unless he asked the uncomfortable questions.

Briefly, Luca internally thought about how caretakers sometimes shaped the lives of the children they were charged with taking care of more than the parents did. This appeared to be the case with Harvey, who was raised by Larnak and Burok more than by his biological parents. However, the boy also silently noted to himself that it was not who raised you but how they did it. Harvey, for all intents and purposes, was a well-mannered young boy of a high station that was raised properly. Luca was, as well, and Lillianna raised him with just as much input from Lorenzo and Amelia. Filing away that thought, Luca smiled slightly at Harvey and continued enjoying the cheese and juice. After a brief pause following Harvey’s response to the loaded question, Luca thought it an appropriate moment to move the evening along.

“What else exciting did you have planned for us, Harvey?” the heir said evenly. Luca was not boisterous about it, but he was very excited to be spending time with his friend. He was even more curious about what the evening held.
