★ ────────────── ★ the power to give, the power to be, the power to seeKitty was being superficial. She knew that.
When she first came to Hogwarts, the Charms classroom was ready to use. The previous professor, a ms. Fresnel, had left it in… well, maybe not perfect order, considering the light mess, but far from an unusable state. It was organised chaos — the kind Kitty could only smile at. She found a box full of wooden skeletons in one of the shelves when she was first rummaging around, and could only guess what purpose they served, but opted not to throw them out. Another box held baking supplies — those Kitty returned to the kitchen, happy to get the opportunity to make an acquaintance with the house elves that manned it.
Still, Kitty was not afraid to say that yes, there was that little superficial part of her — the part that loved pink and glitter and shiny things, and that wanted the classroom to be a little more her. Her office and room were decorated with the stuff she usually had at her work station back at Gringotts: mostly photos and some plants. Some photos ended up on her desk in the classroom, too, but with everything distributed between multiple rooms, it meant the classroom was, admittedly… a little bare.
That wasn’t a bad thing, Kitty supposed. It was fine — it was meant to be a classroom. It needed to be prepared for mishaps from 11 year old kids learning Wingardium Leviosa for the first time and deciding to use it to fling inkwells at each other, as well as seventh years learning Firestorm for the first time. After a few days, Kitty had decided on a few items she wanted, and after consulting plenty of wizarding furniture firms on self-cleaning curtains and chairs that never got worn out, she picked out a few items. The big ticket was a chair in her favorite fuschia color, of course — she anticipated a lot of office hours spent consulting and explaining things to her students, and similarly, a lot of hours spent grading assignments and exams. A comfortable chair was a must.
The smaller items were some curtains marketed as “generally indestructive”. Kitty had no clue what that meant, but as long as they were magically protected from setting the castle in flames and from general cleaning spells, she figured they would be fine. In the same vein — a rug, also marketed as “most-things-proof”.
Apparently, it was not safe from getting lost by the owl post.
You’d really think wizards had better ways of delivering rugs than a bunch of owls carrying a giant roll of fabric across thousands of miles. Though Kitty loved being a witch, really, she couldn’t say she didn’t miss the convenience of muggle stores. Same day shipping, unfortunately, was a pipe dream for the wizarding world, unless one used Floo powder — and with Hogwarts’ restrictions on unauthorized floo travel, it would have only taken more time to get the school administration to approve some delivery guy for a rug. She had been in owl contact with the people from the furniture firm for nearly a full week, now, and had come to the conclusion that it had to be run by beasts, and not beings, or at least by people fully committed to misunderstanding everything she wrote.
Finally, after tiring out the school owls with almost daily trips (and rewarding them with more treats than advised), they had come to the conclusion: the rug had been delivered to Hogwarts, just… no one knew where in the castle. So, getting the letter confirming said conclusion at dinner, the moment she was done eating, Kitty decided she was putting a stop to all of this, and finding her rug. However superficial her need of one was.
The task turned out to be far more challenging than she had anticipated. She checked the owlery first, thinking it to be the most likely place for, well, owls, to get lost — no such luck. Then came the Astronomy tower, which proved fruitless, too, though really, Kitty didn’t go through with too thorough a search. It was evening, after all, and classes there were about to start.
The last of the towers was the North Tower, one Kitty hadn’t ever frequented. It wasn’t close to Gryffindor tower, which was really the only one she had visited often during inter-school visits, and it wasn’t too important of a location for her to deliberately scope out over her first moments at Hogwarts. Though she hoped to meet the Caretaker, Runes professor, and Divination professor sooner rather than later, she wasn’t trying to look like a stalker and accost them in their respective offices.
Kitty picked a door at random, really, hope to find her rug dwindling by the minute. What she found after stepping inside, however, was far better than any furniture could have been. The room was glowing: literally. Brilliant, bright colors, ones Kitty loved — her superficial adoration of shiny things was being indulged in as she shamelessly stared at the gorgeous yellows, oranges, pinks, and purples that filled the space. It glowed like a sunset before turning to night — again, literally, displaying bright twinkling stars as she only imagined they now were outside. She could only imagine this was the divination classroom, and though yes, she wasn’t entirely sure if she was allowed to be here… it seemed empty. She wasn’t harming anyone by having a look, right?
Entranced, Kitty found herself walking further inside, until she was standing in the middle of the room, staring up at the beauty on display. It was nothing short of gorgeous, and Kitty was nothing short of absolutely charmed.

Desislava had spit out her tea that evening all over her desk and her pajamas when a set of delivery owls had chucked a large rolled up rug into her office window that morning breaking the damned thing and scaring the bejeesus out of her. They had hooted loudly when she shouted after the feathery fiends but flew away before she could throw the parcel back at them. Now she was covered in tea, dealing with a broken window, and had a mysterious package that was addressed to a "Katherine Townsend" to deal with.
Desi wasn't sure if this was a student's package that had been misdelivered to the Great Hall or if the delivery owls had gotten steered off course. It was strange but she knew that if she was in the shoes of this "Katherine" individual then she would have relied on the kindness of strangers to deliver her package to the rightful owner. However first she needed to fix her window. With a practiced wave of her hand, the shattered pieces of the window slowly rose and fixated themselves back in place as though it had not been broken in the first place.
Desislava yawned as she followed suit with a quick drying spell but wrinkled her nose at the tea stain that was splattered across her front. The bright pink hue of the pomegranate and roobios looked as though she had gobbled up the fruit in a delicious endeavor. It would make her look like a mess in front of people.
She dragged the heavy parcel which had suddenly burst into its large size out into the joined staircase that would lead to either her office or to her dorm. As she grunted and let out a slew of both Bulgarian and Tahitian- she noticed that there was yet another visitor in her classroom. She seemed to be quite popular as of late and while she appreciated the visitations it would be nice to be aware of new people entering her classroom.
My friend! I'm afraid I'm not available for a reading of anything- palms, tea, or cards tonight. Should you not be in the Great Hall? And if not how close is it to curfew. The only tower near this one is the Ravenclaws and I would hate to give you detention for being out past curfew. I-" Desislava started before she tripped and fell down the stairs in grand fashion not unlike a cartoon character from those muggle teli-vision showcases that Ezra loved to watch so much.
She tumbled down the steps and landed at the foot of the stairs with a dazed expression. The inevitable soreness that would accompany her for the rest of the week despite a quick healing spell did not sit well in her mind as she pulled herself to her feet and looked at the unrolled carpet. In the midst of a sea of blue (a pun she knew solidified her concussion), the carpets colors clashed violently with her classroom aesthetic. It was not an array of colors she usually incorporated in her daily life. The greenery and pink hues where not matching well with the calming tranquil environment that she attempted to make for her students.
It looked like a pattern out of a Kalidascope and as much as she loved the musings of the plastic pieces within the childrens toy, it wasn't hers. She looked at the woman standing in front of her. It most definitely wasn't a student who had wandered into her classroom. Desislava looked at her curiously and opened her mouth before turning around and gagging slightly from the vertigo that hit her after tumbling down the stairs. When she stopped gagging, she cleared her throat and gestured to the carpet.
"I'm sorry you witnessed that. But I don't think this goes well with my classroom do you? I'm assuming you might know who this carpet would actually belong to then." She said with a light laugh in fear that she would actually throw up. It wouldn't be very professional to throw up in front of a colleague or a visiting professor, whomeever it might be.
"I don't believe we've met and I promise I don't often fall down my stairs. But enough of that- My name is Desislava. I suppose you are one of our newer additions to the school educators?" Desislava said as she offered her hand out to the woman forgetting that the front side of her button down was still caked in red tea. When she came to her senses, it was only a sheepish laugh that followed. "The delivery owls scared me and I'm afraid I spilled a sweet tea across myself. I promise that I am less of a mess than I am coming across as."
It would be nice to make another friend within the castle. So far, the only two that Desislava could accurately count on was Sarai Toussaint-Fleischer and perhaps the former Potions Professor now turned Head of House Slytherin, Samuel Sauber. It often got lonely within her tower and while she did love the students where beginning to showcase a better understanding of her profession and her place among their teachers, Desislava couldn't help but still feel a sting of isolation when the last class ended for the day and her journey from the Great Hall in the evening fell flat at the entrance to her classroom.
Hopefully this encounter would not scare the new woman off but rather foster a friendship that could withstand the depths of the years.
