Since getting into the Quidditch team, the one thing Pam had been most curious about (besides learning to improve herself obviously) was moderating. All the games she'd attended so far, both as a spectator up on the stands and as a part of the team had had moderators (way to state the obvious) and Pam had found herself watching them with growing curiosity, wondering what moderating would be like. It had seemed really fun to her.

So when the girl, Cinder Blake she had introduced herself, had asked her to moderate a duel, she'd agreed without even a second thought.

The date they'd decided on was the seventeenth of February, a day where their schedules were empty at the same time. Pam had never met either of the two participants, and she found d herself wondering about what to expect. Would they be as bad as she'd been when she had started out Quidditch? Would they be average like she was now? Or were they gonna be one of those people who had a natural talent for anything and everything they tried?

Soon it was time for them to get started. The two participants, Cinder and Dylan Astor, arrived soon. Pam greeted them softly, "Hi Cinder, hello Dylan! Pleasure to finally meet you!" She explained the rules, no potions, no fist fights even though that would've been entertaining. She stepped out of their way as Dylan and Cinder took their places. "And lastly, remember to have fun! Now, one.. two... three... Go!"

I didn't want to be a duellist. It didn't seem anywhere near as fun as quidditch - no high soaring flying, nowhere near as many near-death experiences. However, it was a useful skill to have.
So, when I came to the Magical Olympics, I saw my chance to try it out. I'd found a duelling partner, a moderator, and a guide on "Duelling for Dummies." That morning, I came to somewhere vaguely near the arranged place much earlier than I would usually like to wake up, however I thought it would be good to be prepared. I'd brought a small flask filled up with hot-chocolate, so I sat down on the least icy patch I could find, and carefully drank it. I felt my face getting cold, so I pushed my hair over my face. Annoyingly, the extreme cold was making my face, or more specifically, my scars, get extremely painful. However, thankfully I soon saw the moderator, a Hufflepuff, was at the arranged point, so I walked over. Soon, the person I was duelling against also arrived, and I stood in the stance that I'd read about. However, I realised that the moderator was then saying all of the rules, and standing in the stance was extremely uncomfortable, so I stood normally again, just in time for her to say that we could begin. Typical.

Dueling was Dylan's passion. He had learned how much he enjoyed the sport early into his second year, and he had never turned back. It was the sport for him like Quidditch was his cousin, Avery's. Maybe that was why he had accepted the challenge of an unofficial duel at Koldovstoretz. It made things more interesting as the pressure of waiting for the Olympics built up. He was nervous. This was his first time ever hearing about the famous sport games let alone competing in them!

Here he was standing in front of his opponent. He didn't want to hurt her. No. That was something his mother had taught him well, but dueling was dueling and there would be no holding back. He had to prove to his team that he was good enough to compete alongside them that summer. That was what motivated him.

He got into position. He noticed his opponent had done the same at first, then quickly changed. He didn't know what that meant or if he wasn't supposed to be in position yet, but he brushed it off. He was already doing it, so why quit now? The answer was that there was no reason to quit. It was time to duel.

Pam watched curiously as she started the game, a childish excitement bubbling in her chest. This was bound to be quite fun, right?

Cinder cast Mimblewimble, much to Pam's surprise. Although she wasn't sure why she was surprised. What was she expecting, flying water blobs and snakes? She hated snakes.

It's a good choice though, Pam thought approvingly. Intelligent. Mimblewimble would render the opponent unable to talk, so unless he had wandless magic, or non-verbal magic, he'd have to wait the spell out. Probably. Unless she was missing something.

Dylan, on the other hand, had chosen fire as his offense tactic. Pam watched fascinated as he cast his spell, inwardly grateful it wasn't aimed at her.

She was terrified of fire.

How aggressive though. Not even Incendio but Incendio duo. How fun.

Both of them successfully cast the spell, but neither of them struck the intended target. Pam watched the two duellists dodge the spells smoothly, although it was pretty close for Cinder.

Atleast she's not on fire.

As someone who did not remotely appreciate that specific element of nature, Pam was glad no-one got hurt. On the other hand, the part of her that had come for the fun and in hope of some entertainment was rather disappointed. It was alright though. The game had just started.

Dylan missed me with his fire spell, and I missed him with mimblewimble. What a shame.
I needed to do better next round, as I knew I'd only just escaped from the heat of the spell, so next time... well, it was better just to hope that wouldn't need to happen. It was getting quite cold, so I was glad that I'd decided to wear a warm top and jeans. Although, the top was too big for me, so my shoulders were quite chilly. I really should've worn a coat.
I could still taste the hot chocolate that I'd drank before, and I was glad for the sugar, otherwise I probably would've just fallen asleep, tired from waking up early.
I looked at Dylan, trying to gauge his emotions - was he planning to go offensive again, or defend himself. Was he scared, or silently laughing at me?
Actually, I needed to decide what I was going to do - attack him before he could attack me, or defend myself, in case he decided to shoot fire at me again.
Although, I wasn't scared of the fire. It was much less dangerous than the dragons in the sanctuary, and even they didn't scare me.

There was something about Cinder that was messing with his head. Making him less aware of his surroundings. Something. . . charming? Was that even the right English word for what he was experiencing? Probably not, but it was good enough. He had to focus. He was already losing his head again. A dangerous move.

He felt the spell coming even before it hit him. Dodging just in time, he stared in shock as the spell flew past him. Mimblewimble. Thankfully he had dodged that. He wasn't much of a talker, but not being able to talk at all or perform spells would be the death of him.

Reacting quickly, Dylan quickly formed the wand movement and called out, "Incendio Duo!"

It was a beautiful spell, but Cinder was too quick to react. Letting out a huff of annoyance, Dylan pulled his act together with a quick shake of his head. He had to do better this next round. He had to prove to himself that he could do this. Regardless of how much he didn't want to hurt the girl.

"Well, I guess we're evenly matched. Good luck next round, Cinder." Dylan spoke plainly. Covering his mood like he always had. He had to keep up his facade. Otherwise she would be able to read him like a book and know exactly what his next move was going to be.

Dylan had picked the same spell this time too. Pam tried not to giggle and laugh like an idiot even as a question rose unbidden to her mind. Why did the boy like fire so much? Not that it mattered. She just... really never wanted to be in the way of so much fire.

No way. No. Nope. No.

Cinder, it seemed, had taken a page out of Dylan's book, and cast the exact same spell. Incendio Duo. And Pam soon had a first-row seat to a whole lot of orange flames she absolutely did not like. Why so much fire?

Cinder's spell was... terrifyingly powerful and Pam winced as she watched Dylan face the full brunt of it. Okay, that is concerning. Is he okay-- "And Dylan was hit!" Pam found herself blurting the words without even realising. Yeah, no shit Sherlock. "Ohh, and his spell totally misses Cinder. Are you alright?" Pam wasn't sure if it was because of the fact that the boy was, quite literally on fire, but his spell went off in a totally different direction, missing Cinder completely.

Pam suddenly, conveniently realised she had no clue what exactly it was she was supposed to be doing. She was sure suddenly feeling pretty awkward. It was fine. She clapped her hands in what she hoped was an encouraging gesture. "Let's keep it going! Good luck!"

Did she sound hypocritical?
