Studying in the library
Iris sat alone in the library, in a usual corner. She often came here to study. Today's topic of choice was History of Magic. She loved history as much as the next witch or wizard but sometimes the topics bored her to the max.
She let out a low groan. If she had to read one more word about some old guy who died hundreds of years before she was even born she felt like she would die. She sighed and buried her head in her books.
She thought that maybe she should try something else or maybe take a break. Regardless she didn't want to spend even another second doing history of magic homework or reading from the textbook. It was long and boring.
She wished that she could choose the context of what she read. Then, the book would actually be interested in since it would actually include topics that she would want to learn.
She took a deep breath and looked around. Had anyone seen her get annoyed with her very own textbook. She ran fingers through her hair nervously. Then she flipped through the history of magic book. She then grabs a pencil and begins writing.

Lauren pushed the library doors open gently, careful not to let them creak too loudly. The room felt vast the moment she stepped inside, the ceiling arched high above her like the inside of a cathedral. Tall shelves formed neat, endless rows, creating little pathways that made the place feel almost like a maze.
The air carried a faint, dusty sweetness from aging pages, mixed with the sharper scent of fresh ink. Lamps glowed softly on the long wooden tables, casting warm pools of light over scattered parchments and open books. Every now and then, she heard the quiet shuffle of someone shifting in their seat or the delicate flip of a page turning.
She walked slowly, her fingers brushing lightly along the spines of the books as she passed. Some were smooth and cool beneath her touch, others rough and worn from years of use. The deeper she moved between the shelves, the quieter it became, as though the books themselves were guarding the silence.
When Lauren finally chose a table near the back, she felt small but safe, hidden away from the rest of the world. The library didn’t demand anything from her except focus. It wrapped around her like a hush, steady and watchful, as she settled into her seat and opened a book.
The book was an ordinary textbook.
I’d better read A History of Magic. I’ve already read the other school books!
After a few minutes, Lauren felt bored.
Why is this so boring? I’ve never felt this way about a book before! Back in school, I loved history. What happened?
Lauren looked around, hoping to see someone like her.
She noticed a girl with black hair tied into two buns. She tiptoed over quietly, hoping the girl wouldn’t notice her right away. She didn’t want to cause any awkward questions. Peering over slightly, she saw that the girl, like her, was reading A History of Magic. The girl wore a red and yellow scarf with the Gryffindor symbol on it.
She must be a Gryffindor then!
Lauren nervously tapped the girl’s shoulder.
“Um… hello… I-I’m Lauren… W-What’s your name?”
Lauren asked softly, not meeting the girl’s eyes.

Iris nodded slightly and gazed at Lauren. She offered an awkward smile. She hasn't noticed the girl at first, but right before she had said hi, Iris noticed a slight barely noticeable shuffle of feet that have the girl away before she talked so it didn't make Iris jump. She scratched her head and waited a moment before talking.
"Yes.... Hi. I'm Iris. It's nice to meet you Lauren." She said with a slight nod to go along with her words. She gazed at the "History of Magic" book in the girl's hand and nodded slightly again, this time, in the direction of the book.
"Oh! You're also studying History of Magic? Do you like that class? I find some parts more fun than others myself." She said hoping to strike up a conversation but she was always a bit awkward.
She liked history and loved to learn new things but she had found History of Magic to be a challenge that she didn't expect... A good challenge though. She liked to be challenged. She likes when things were hard and didn't always come easily to her. It made life more interesting. She closes the book and gazes at the girl more directly while she waits for an answer from her.
