It was September 1st.

And Natalie Morris was about to board the Hogwarts Express on Platform 9¾. It sounded like madness to her. How could there possibly be a platform between 9 and 10? She had been told to run straight through a barrier between those two platforms, but it simply didn’t make sense. Wouldn’t someone non magical, called “Muggles” as she had heard, be able to see her? What would an ordinary person think of a child running into a wall and vanishing into thin air? She worried that she might have misunderstood something important and would end up doing it the wrong way.
What made matters worse was that her mom had important work to get to, meaning Natalie would have to do something as absurd as walking into a wall all by herself..

She grabbed hold of her trolley tightly, unusually nervous and suddenly conscious of every step she took, but she continued walking until she reached the wall.

A plain, brick, wall.

She looked around, unsure what to do, and then stepped closer to reach out and touch it. It was solid brick, exactly what anyone would expect. At this point she was starting to worry, but after some time of replaying the thought of her mom’s instructions to run right through it, she did. She closed her eyes and ran, fear rising inside her. In a few seconds she was certain that she would crash straight into it.

But she didn’t.

Instead, she felt something like mist, cool and tingling against her skin. She could have sworn the wall wasn’t that far. She retarded her speed and stopped as soon as she could.
And slowly opened her eyes.

The wall was gone. In fact, she wasn’t even on the same platform anymore. She took seconds to process it but… she did it!

Platform 9 3/4 stretched out in a long, gentle curve, framed by the high arch of its iron canopy. The sharp whistle of the train echoed in the air, mixed with constant chatter and a rush of movement around her. It all felt strangely comforting. But when she turned around, she was left stunned.

Beautiful.

The Hogwarts Express. A gleaming scarlet train. The brass fittings on it were polished so bright that they reflected every flicker of the station lights. Every few seconds, a billow of warm white steam was let out and the air filled with the scent of coal, metal, and magic.

Natalie stared for a moment before slowly walking towards it. Around her, students were saying goodbye to their moms and dads, hugging tightly before boarding. Suddenly, she missed hers. She didn’t even have a clue why her dad didn’t come and this thought bothered her a little.

Trying to push it aside, she lifted her heavy suitcase and climbed aboard. She let out a quiet sigh and walked in. The corridors were narrow and warmly lit by lantern sconces and the train hummed underfoot. Rows of wooden-framed doors lead into private compartments where she heard a murmur of chatter. Still undeniably mesmerized she found an empty compartment lined with cushioned benches in deep burgundy upholstery and stepped inside.
Sunlight flickered against the windows almost like the rhythm of her heart. She took it all in before finally sitting down.

Her journey was about to begin.

Natalie couldn’t imagine herself flying. She couldn’t picture waving her wand and making objects lift into the air either. But that was exactly what she would be learning, along with countless other spells and potions, at Hogwarts. She didn’t know what to think of it.

As the train sped past never ending patchwork fields, she watched winding rivers and distant forests blur together in the distance, her gaze fixed outside the window. She wondered what Hogwarts would look like. Maybe a white marble castle with dome like structures? Maybe just a normal stone school? Or perhaps a floating castle? Was that even possible?

She still felt disconnected from this new world. Magic was new to her, and she had a feeling the other students might not like her since she barely knew anything. She was sure pure bloods and even half bloods would know far more than she did.

Her mom, Jade Morris, was a witch too. After discovering that she was magical herself, Natalie had asked her countless questions. Once they reached school, she would be sorted into a house. Her mom had mentioned four: Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw, and Slytherin.

Gryffindors were brave and daring. Natalie wished she could be one, but she doubted it.
Hufflepuffs were loyal and hardworking. Deep down, she knew that was where she would be.
Ravenclaws were intelligent and witty, and Slytherins were ambitious and resourceful.

After this, she would be living in her house’s common room, learning how to cast spells, brew potions, and even fly on brooms. Later, she could join a sport called Quidditch or learn to duel using her spells. There were so many new things waiting for her, and the thought was both thrilling and overwhelming.
