Dylan was never one for large crowds. If anything, he was the complete opposite of his cousin, Avery. He was a lone wolf. One that preferred traveling light if at all. Avery was the complete opposite. She was the outgoing one. She was the one who always walked fearlessly into a crowd and did her best to make friends with everyone.

That was probably what she was doing at that exact moment. That or she was spending time with her boyfriend, Mikey. A smile curled on Dylan's lips at the thought of his cousin actually dating someone. He had had the feeling the two would eventually end up together and he himself had plenty of times rooted them on for the past year. Though seeing them together reminded Dylan of just how single he was.

Being single was great. It meant that he was free to go as he pleased and do what he wanted. Then there was the fact of Summer. His best friend. The first person he had met that was his age at Ilvermony. Who would have known that their accidental meeting would turn into a blossoming friendship. She was Dylan's closest friend. His best friend.

Yet something was different between them, and he couldn't place his finger on it. There was a tension of unspoken words between them. The words that were pushing the rift between them? Well, Dylan didn't know, and it frustrated him. If only he could figure out everything that was happening between them so he could fix everything before it all fell apart. He could not lose her. He could not lose his best friend.

Dylan leaned against a tree. His face that bore his emotions laid bare was cast in shadows too dark for anyone to make out. He just stood there. A sigh escaping his lips. This was his break from life. For now.

The meadow of flowers was close to where he stood. A reminder of what he had lost. Val. A girl Dylan had become close to, yet he was the reason they had gone their separate ways. If only he could have said the right words to make everything better instead of tearing everything between them apart. He hadn't even seen Val since their last meeting the day after the ball. The day everything fell apart between them.

Maybe that was his curse. He could never be with someone or love anyone without losing them over and over again.

Dylan opened his eyes when he felt someone slide in next to him. For a moment he thought Summer had come. Though stealth wasn't her forte. She was a bright light that Dylan easily found. Dylan was the dark one. The one that slipped through the shadows.

Dylan looked down and noticed a younger girl had slid in beside him. She was a few inches shorter than Dylan. Most likely a first year by the look of her. She had long brown curly hair that cascaded down her back and sweet brown eyes. Her glasses suited her complexion.

"Hello. I'm Dylan. And you are?" Dylan asked. His Welsh accent strong.

Ever since he had begun returning to his home country for breaks, his accent had only grown stronger. He had been worried before. His accent had been the last thing he had of home, and he couldn't lose it.

Then there was the girl. Who was she and what had brought her out to the grounds? Dylan nearly asked, but he thought that was rude. He would let the girl speak her name first. Then he would ask questions later. Respect was something his mother had taught him well on.
