Rory ran his hands along the silvered cages of the small shop, careful to pull back whenever the inhabitant seemed a bit too agitated to allow it. The small cages filled with birds of varying breeds and varieties had him completely enthralled. They were fascinating, the beautiful creatures that they were. The shop was filled with the calls of a dozen birds at least, their coos and trills in response to each other were absolutely enchanting. If Rory was a bit more confident he would have made bird noises back at the creatures.
The warmth of the shop was enough that he had removed his coat, draping it over the crook of his arm. Apparently a lot of the birds liked warm weather more, which gave cause to wonder why they were even sold in London.
He was here to buy an owl for the next school year, but he still stopped to look at each of the birds. They sold hawks, which apparently could be trained if someone simply tried hard enough. He wanted one when he was an adult, not that he knew if they could be used to send letters or not. He assumed that they could be but he really had no idea and he didn't want to bother the shopkeeper anymore with his huge list of questions.
"Hey dad," he turned towards his father, putting on his best begging face. "I don't suppose I could get the big owl?" There was this absolute beast of a bird in the cage before him and it called his name. Just think of all the adventure's he could go on with a bird like that. He could send letters all the way across the continent in no time!
He dad laughed, "No, Rory. You can't have that one. Pick something reasonable, you know the deal." Rory frowned, but he didn't mind too much. He was pretty certain that wasn't going to work. He walked down another row of cages and paused. One in particular had caught his eye. It was an absolutely beautiful owl with large dark eyes that almost seemed to peer into him. It was perfect. And a respectable size which meant that his dad had no reason to tell him no.
He checked the tag on the cage, labeling it as a yet unnamed female tawny owl. She was perfect.
He pulled his dad over, gesturing at the cage, "This one, this is the one I want, she's beautiful!" She was only ten galleons too, something that his dad wouldn't have any qualms about. It was a pretty good price compared to a lot of other birds in the shop.
"So long as you're sure." His dad responded, placing the small coins in Rory's hand and grabbing the cage to carry it to the front of the store.
He let Rory deposit the coins in the shopkeepers hand, and carried the cage for Rory who was a bit nervous about being able to handle it properly. He wouldn't be able to forgive himself if anything happened to the beautiful little owl.
As they were walking out his dad spoke up, filling the quiet, "So what are you going to name her?"
