﹕Basics﹕ Trunk﹕ Backstory ▼﹕ Threads ﹕ Connections﹕I. MotherMAD MORGAN... That’s how mother had often been referred to by peers during her years at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. In reality, her name was Arabella Morgan, and she was gifted in divination, supposedly coming from a broken line of Seers. Or so she claimed to be. Although a negative reputation preceded the woman in the wizarding world, given her embarrassingly low grades and inability to function properly among wizard kind, she was well-regarded among Muggles as Miss Future, engaging with tarot readings and fortune-telling rituals for those who believed in her.
Living in Westminster, in a small but cozy apartment not so far from downtown, Arabella lived out her dream of having a peaceful life, away from the shallow worries of her pureblooded and narrow-minded family about how witches and wizards should behave. Although she had her wand with her at all times, the woman struggled with the most basic of spells, bashfully laughing it off whenever things didn’t turn out as she expected, or whenever her son stared at her with confused eyes.II. FatherFROM WHAT he’s been told over the years, his mother fell in love with his father as soon as she began her tarot endeavors. William Sangster, a golden-haired skeptic who worked at a Muggle secondary school. He was the beautiful stranger who sat by the coffee shop near her place almost every day. He’d order the same thing every time, devouring a different philosophy book whenever Arabella set eyes on him.
It was a love story for the ages, she’d say, starry-eyed: a Muggle skeptic and a secret witch. And from that love came Jude Morgan.
Mother struggled to talk much about father's death: when it happened, what seemed to cause it, and how she managed to deal with grief. Whenever Jude got too curious, her lips trembled, tears flooded her eyes, and she quickly changed the topic to something more fun. Over time, Jude learned not to question her... He didn't like seeing his mother so upset, after all. Instead, he gratefully listened to the wonderful tales Arabella had to tell, allowing himself to bask in the faint memory of the father he never met, wondering what their relationship would've been like had they met.III. JudeTO ARABELLA, JUDE was a constant reminder of their lost, short-lived love. Skinny and lanky like his father, curly golden hair and clear-blue-sky eyes, although often shimmering with mischief, rather than eagerness to learn. The freckles around his face could be replicas of the ones Sangster sported, but all the photos of the man were far too blurry for him to compare. Whenever she caught him staring too much at his father’s pictures, Arabella would run her fingers through his hair and tell him about another one of their many romantic dates…
Other than his looks, though, Jude couldn’t be more different from his father. Quick-witted and snappy, the boy couldn’t go a minute without talking. Whenever he wasn’t talking, you’d be sure to find him humming under his breath to some popular song he’d heard before. He was a noise machine, making his presence known wherever he went, sharing his opinions with whoever was close enough to hear him. More so, his clumsiness and short fuse were all gifts from his maternal side. Same with his inability to read the room.
Mother reminded him to be polite, but Jude failed to see where he'd gone wrong. With the attention span of a goldfish, the boy struggled in class. Remaining perfectly still was an even bigger challenge for him. Now that he's super grown and mature, Jude liked to believe he's doing slightly better than before. Even if most adults still give him a nasty glare, mother agreed with him!IV. MagicMOTHER NEVER HID magic from him, although she had yet to prove that her divination skills were something other than a scam to pay their rent. Yes, she was a witch, but apart from a few cleaning spells here and there, the woman presented more like a Muggle than anything else. So, Jude never got to explore beyond what his mother showed him. He didn’t even get to have wizard friends! Or tell others about it. (Arabella was very serious when she warned Jude not to tell his Muggle friends about what they were able to do.) He had never even been able to cast a spell on his own.
“Oh, Ju,” Arabella had said when she found a very disappointed Jude pointing her wand at a broken vase. She didn’t look moderately mad at her vase, but seemed more interested in the tears pooling in her son’s eyes. She placed a hand on top of his curly locks, kneeling beside him. “Don’t be upset. It’s okay if you’re not a wizard… You can be just like your father that way,”
It wasn’t what he had wanted to hear.
Years passed, and he hadn’t shown a singular sign of magic. The longer it took, the more upset he got with himself. Knowing mother was a witch had been the coolest thing in his entire life, and… the chance of not being able to go to a magic school and cast spells, it lingered over Jude’s head like a grey cloud. Arabella’s attempts to encourage her son to try Muggle hobbies to find himself were only met with resistance, as the boy demanded to know more and more about the wizarding world and his wizard family.
Despite the struggles, Jude reigned victorious.
At last, after turning eight, he displayed magic in a way he’d never be able to forget. Running around the park with his classmates, in an exciting game of tag, Jude failed to put a good distance between himself and Emily Harlow and now faced the small lake blocking his path. Before the girl could lay a finger on him, however, Jude saw himself shooting up in the air. In the blink of an eye, he was on the other side of the river, as far away from her as he had wanted it.
He ran to his mother as soon as he saw her. “I’m a wizard! I’m a wizard, mum!” Jude Morgan told her in secret, eyes sparkling with excitement.V. FamilyTHE REST OF his family was an even bigger mystery to him. He had never once received a bloody birthday gift from relatives, and his mother refrained from engaging in the boy's suggestion to visit them. Mother would comment on a few names here and there, which have stuck to the back of his mind like bubblegum, but he's never put a singular face to them. No pictures. No letters. Nothing.
