[quote]🅸n the morning of a cold day, the Astors, on the other hand, were warming inside their house. Decorating the living room with all the things floating around, while Baxter, the house elf, managed the table, ready for food. Today was a holiday, and they had a special guest to welcome. This was not the first gathering Skylar had tended to, but not many, either, after she made an awkward silence at the whole table last time.

A manor was lit up a bit. It went from a big, damp stone building, crawling with dirty vines, into an elegant light gray stone house with steep slate roofs in just a few minutes. Fresh Ivy and climbing plants grew along the walls. A peaceful manor hid from the city, as well as the Astors hid themself from gossip.

Skylar had met Grandma Nelly once. She was a Bishop, not Astor. But she was related to her Grandma. Great-aunt, if properly called her. She seemed pretty close to Aunt Amelia in Skylar’s eyes. Maybe that's why she liked her Great-aunt more than her actual grandma.

When she first met, Skylar gave Great-aunt a little tour, showing where she had been running around the house. Almost lost by herself. Since there were many doors and many rooms. Some opened to the fields and gardens. Some were corridors that lay paths to the forest and highland. Some were damp and lakes. Most of them just connect to natural habitats. All the bedrooms and rest cornor were on the upper floors.

She could not deny that she was excited to show Grandma Nelly again. Also preferred to hear more of the interesting things her Great-aunt liked to say, as everyone knew Skylar spent most of the time with her aunt listening to adventure and mystery stories. Plants and Animals were favorite topics, of course.

After finishing all the work, stopping her memory lane. She adjusted herself and looked comfy in the mirror. Little feet rushed down the stairs when the bell rang. Welcoming an old woman, a warm hug like every family member, before noticing someone behind her. Grandma Nelly did not come here alone like the last time. A boy with dark hair stood in the cold. Her father invited both of them inside with manners. Skylar gave a weird, small smile to the boy before leading him to the dining room.

Edward returned the smile softly. It was his first time visiting his grandmother's extended family. She had always been proud of her nephew, "the professor" she called him, always telling Edward stories about his studies and adventures that he had written to her in his letters. Yet lately, those stories had stopped, and whenever Edward had inquired, her response had only been a sad sigh and forlorn look. Edward sensed something had changed but he wasn't sure what or why. Edward knew better than to press her on it, if it was something she didn't want to talk about or was making her sad, he didn't want to dwell on it. His grandmother had mentioned to him that the letters dropped off by her family's owls were now coming from the professor's wife instead. One such letter contained an invitation to a small family gathering for Christmas. His grandmother had said she wanted to bring him along as well, if he wanted to come; that she had already gotten permission from his parents to bring him along with her. He smiled and said he did. He thought it would be nice getting to know his extended family on her side better as well - he had learned that they were mostly Hufflepuff graduates like she was - and as she was his favorite person, he thought that he surely would get along with his family on that side well as well.

And so it was that he found himself on their doorstep, now being greeted by a girl his own age. He had a vague memory of having seen her once before when they were both younger, was it at his grandfather's funeral? He seemed to recall that they were placed together amongst the other children who were too young to be required to sit through the funeral proper itself. Of course, at the time, his sadness at the loss of his grandfather made the whole thing a blur. He recalled that she seemed quiet too, and he hadn't spoken to her either. But it was still nice to know that there was family around at a time like that.

Now, however, it was supposed to be a happy, festive occasion rather than a sad one, so he was determined to make the most of his visit. She had a small smile herself, he tried to give her one a bit brighter of his own - since it was Christmas and all - as she led him to the dining room.

[quote]🅼r. and Mrs. Astor had reached the table as their guest already sat before them. Skylar found her place near Aunt Amelia. Quietly glanced at the boy. Not sure she remembered him when younger. But she was quite excited to see someone her age in this house. Still, her face showed no emotion. Only her eyes could talk through her.

The Astor twins always gave their charm with a big smile, complimenting Grandma Nelly since she arrived. How thoughtful of them. That’s what Skylar read from her grandparents' look. Two little angels did everything right and were full of positive vibes, unlike the arrogant face of Skylar, even though she unintentionally expressed it to people.

The food popped up in a second. Baxter snapped his finger, pouring the drink, pumpkin juice for kids. “This must be my grandnephew.” Her grandma asked Great Aunt before everyone started the meal. Looking at him with adoration. “What a young, fine boy. I never seen him closer since the funeral. Why don’t you bring him sooner?” The praise voice went on. “Edward. Isn’t it? The boy seemed pretty smart, just one look at him.” The Astor twins laughed along with their conversation, leading everyone to laugh also. Skylar never understood what was funny to it. Maybe it was the table manners. She nodded and smiled weirdly along.

A middle-aged woman glanced at the guest.“Do you have any expectations for the gift today? Aunt Nelly. Feel like last time was a bit of a small sprout you get. Maybe this year might be bigger.” Said Amelia. As people knew, the Astors prefer exchanging their plants and herbs as a Christmas gift every year. The family members had to pick some seeds randomly in the garden. Then grow it in the potting plant before present it as a gift. This way showed how they loved nature and were proud to present that all the plants in the house were not only from magic, but also from their dedication. They were doing everything right by the Ministry rules.

Skylar's eyes widened. “Do you like lovage, Grandma Nelly. I planted them a lot this year. Oh! Maybe…” She was excited and got two legs standing up. “Maybe I can show yo…” Her words then stopped mid-air as her mother's sharp eyes gazed. Skylar sat back in her chair lower her voice. “I… I will show you after the meal.”

Amelia laughed softly. “My dear Skye… always crook up in the garden. I could guarantee you that her plants are indeed impressively looking. Aunt Nelly,” The kind eyes then turned to the boy as she chuckled. Amelia gently gave a smile to him. “How about a young boy? Do you expect any gifts today?” Skylar waited for his answer patiently. She was curious if her cousin would possibly like plants too.

The dowager Cornelia Bishop, known to her friends and family as Nelly, had a genuine warmth about her, with wrinkles which exposed a lifetime of bright smiles and easy laughter, a Hogwarts graduate of Hufflepuff extraction, she too like the rest of her family of birth was an enthusiastic herbologist, albeit in her case mostly amateur, her dower house in the Kentish countryside had massive gardens where she grew all manner of plants, both magical and mundane, with fruits and vegetables for eating and herbs for both cookery and potion-making, she was a healer by nature of both body and soul. She always made sure to make those around her feel loved. Here, surrounded by family sharing a hearty meal, she was in her element. She shared stories to update the extended family on her own immediate family's lives - she admitted that it had been hard sometimes living alone after her late husband died, but maintained that he would have wanted her to go on to be happy and live life to the fullest as a widow and so that's what she was intending to do, nothing was more important to her than family.

Meanwhile, Edward sat quietly as well, he smiled softly but felt awkward whenever he became the center of attention, squirming a bit uncomfortably at the scrutiny, but having been taught well by his parents and grandparents he answered their queries with not just politeness but a certain amount of warmth of his own - any family of his grandmother's was his family too, after all.

When he was finally asked directly about whether he was expecting any presents, he blushed,
"Oh, well, you needn't go out of your way on my account, but if I were to receive a gift, I would be most grateful no matter what it was. If it were a plant, I'm sure Granny (as he alone called her, being her only grandchild) would teach me how to tend to it whenever we got back home, and I'd do my very best to make sure it thrived" he says, with a genuine tone, glancing now over at his cousin Skylar, wondering what's on her mind, given he found it hard to read the look on her face.

[quote]🄰melia laughed, small but genuine. “What a humble young boy.” Everyone in Skylar’s family looked agreeable, smiling through their ears. It was surprising. It was the first time she saw her parents could have the same opinion as her aunt.

She did not smile, but her enthusiastic eyes shone bright. Even though she was thrilled to learn that her cousin seemed to be interested in plants like her, devoting maybe. She still had to put her poker face on the table because she didn’t want to receive her mother's sharp eyes again.

It was last year, this time, she made an awkward dinner talk, asking the terror question out of curiosity. It should not happen ever again. She repeated herself every day. She did not want to be an outcast of her blood, or a black sheep in her kin. So, she behaved herself with silence, smiling softly, a tug on her lips that she thought was smooth enough to be called a manner. Then Amelia turned to her. “Perhaps Skye could give you one.” She smiled, happily with her own ideas. “Since my dear Skye already started the topic, she can give you a little tour, so you can pick something in the gardens. Right? Aunt Nelly?” She then turned to Great-Aunt.

Her parents came back to frown, uncomfortable to say anything, but still continued their meal. It seemed like they did not feel good about leaving the guest to Skylar’s care.

“It’s great to see someone the same age as my dear Skye. You see,” Amelia added, glancing at Grandma Nelly. “I was a bit worried she wouldn’t be able to make friends at Hogwarts, considering how we, Astor, worked so dedicatedly, gathering only once a year. So, I think it would be wonderful for her to know some familiar face before going to Hogwarts.”

Skylar was embarrassed, avoiding her eyes. It was truth she was a bit nerdy in a way, but also reckless most in the house members, always injurted herself just to smell some toxic herbs. Amelia always looked out for her. But this time, Skylar did not get used to how her aunt interpreted her caring to be so directly.
