Charms was a class that Livia did not quite mind, even if she did not find it quite as enrapturing as Defence Against the Dark Arts or Potions. Charms provided topics that were necessary, spellwork that was simple and effective. Livia equated it to the grunt work of wizardry; although it, in effect, was not exactly the most interesting, one could not graduate from Hogwarts, or go about daily life, without it. Lumos had helped her countless times, of course; but, despite that, she still found she preferred Transfiguration's Sauce-Making Spell or Defence Against the Dark Arts's Flipendo.

Another factor in the young Slytherin's relative dislike for Charms was that, given its simplicity and arguable pointlessness, it did not come as easily to her as the material in many of her other classes. In fact, before the holiday break, she had received an E on one of her papers – an utter horror for a girl who most often achieved nothing but the most stellar of Os. Since then, she had poured herself into her Charms studies, fuelled by spite and a desire to prove herself better than her lowly peers. Reservation kept her from directly asking the new professor how she might improve; though Professor Townsend appeared amiable, Livia had not yet sized up the Charms professor.

That left her with two reliable methods of improvement: studious observation, or asking her peers. And she would most certainly not deign to do the latter. Even as she sat back in class, having already written a practical summary of the importance of a proper incantation and wand movement for the spell of the day, she glanced around at her classmates and forced herself not to scowl. Only the kindness of fate, and proper training on becoming emotionally reserved, made her able to watch with a façade of neutrality. Still, she sat rigidly, her fingers folded together so tightly that the bones of her knuckles flashed white.

As she eyed the others around her, who seemed to be performing the spell with varying rates of success, her gaze caught on a girl who held some semblance of familiarity. Livia's upturned, ocean-green eyes narrowed; yes, she knew Geneva's name from class, but she could also ascertain that Geneva had attended the quick Quidditch game Livia had hosted. She could not recall whether or not the other girl had done anything of remark, so she nearly averted her gaze, only for her eyes to widen upon witnessing a flawless cast.

According to all known laws of society, there was no way she should not have been happy for Geneva. After all, such a flawless cast had to be unlikely for nearly anyone. However, pink, glittery Professor Townsend entered the scene, all bright smile and warm, jubilant voice, and Livia's wide eyes narrowed again as her lips pulled down into a scowl. She glowered at the scene as Professor Townsend extolled great praise upon Geneva, and a bitter, acidic feeling arose within Livia's squirming stomach. Her nose wrinkled of its own accord. Forget the perfect cast! Surely a perfect paper ought to be praised as well. Livia duly desired that her glare would bore a hole through Geneva's wand as a disgusting, but not unfamiliar, hunger surged through her. Her heartbeat quickened, the resounding thudding echoing in her ears, as the only thing she could think was that the praise should have been hers.

Out of all her Hogwarts classes, Charms was the place where Geneva felt most at home. True, Transfiguration was fascinating, and History of Magic intriguing, but Charms just seemed to come naturally. For the first time in her life, she could put a mere thought into action with a flick of the wrist. And it was thrilling.

She was no stranger to being good at things. All her life she’d been labeled a “gifted child,” a phrase that soon became more tiring than pleasing. But this was different. Hogwarts was a place where she struggled to feel like she truly belonged, even when she was warmly welcomed. It was their world, a world of magic, and it was still hard to believe that it was her world too. Charms was her bridge. Her skill proved, at least to herself, that she could excel in this unfamiliar place, no matter where she came from.

Of course, there were still plenty of areas she was not skilled in, one of them being Quidditch. Despite her quiet dreams of somehow becoming a breakout prodigy at the new sport, she hadn’t achieved much of anything at her first practice match the previous month. While personal recognition wasn’t exactly her top priority, she hated being distinctly bad at anything.

Which is why she was keenly irritated to notice another first year, Livia Machavariani, who was as involved in all the Hogwarts teams as an upperclassman. Livia was not only a duelist and a Quidditch player, but she had also captained the Quidditch team at one point. And as if that wasn’t enough, she seemed to be an exceptional student… or else she just put on the airs of one. It was really too much to fathom in a twelve-year-old. Maybe Geneva could bear it if Livia had been a kind and friendly person, but she was constantly looking down her nose at everyone in stony silence. Geneva couldn’t stand it.

Geneva’s train of thought was broken by Professor Townsend announcing that it was time to practice casting. Slightly ashamed, Geneva pulled out her wand. She never meant to zone out in class like that, and she usually enjoyed discussing the charms from an academic perspective. But there’s only so much that can be said about a charm in theory- at some point you just have to try it.

Today’s class was over the Unlocking Charm, which Geneva was quite familiar with from her readings, but had never had a chance to try. Steeling herself mentally, she pointed her wand at the locked chest in front of her. As she pictured the movement diagram in her mind, she deliberately traced a backwards “S” in the air. “Alohomora!”

To her immense delight, the lock popped open. With satisfaction she received Professor Townsend’s ample praises, which were wholly deserved. And suddenly, out of the corner of her eye she glimpsed a souring face. Livia. So, the perfect girl was jealous, was she?

Cooly, Geneva turned back to her chest and swiftly performed the countercharm. “Colloportus!” When the lock clicked solidly back into place, she cast a casual smile over her shoulder. Her eyes glazed over the students and towards the back of the room, but what she really wanted to see was the look on Livia Machavariani’s face.

A thudding, the intensity of which was impossible to rationalise, echoed through Livia's ears as she observed Geneva soak up Professor Townsend's praise like an over-saturated and dingy sponge. Her nose maintained its improper wrinkling, her eyes their narrowed glare, and it took much of her willpower not to cross her arms over her chest in imitation of a petulant infant. The pleased expression upon Geneva's face served as bellows for the sizzling rage Livia had, so far, managed to keep quiet. Livia straightened her spine and reached for her wand, knuckles tightening around the chestnut stick as she decided she very well could do better, if anyone were to care to watch.

As she made to divert her attention from the previous object of her green eyes' attention, one thing halted her movements. She froze, wand lifted in a poor pastiche of a conductor's baton, as Geneva re-assumed the position for casting. Livia's brow furrowed. Slowly, she set her wand down, peering towards the other girl as inconspicuously as she could. She expected something they had already been taught, just flashier, gaudier. However, the incantation 'colloportus' fell over waiting aural orifices, and a small, but very audible, gasp emanated from Livia's open mouth.

The student nearest her affixed her with a molten glare, one that made her cheeks tint in a shade of dusty rose, but she had no apologies to offer. The sight that would greet Geneva was quite laughable: the girl who always tried to be an emotional bulwark was staring openly – eyes wide, a mixture of surprise, awe and horror on display; her jaw slack; her mouth stuck ajar as if she couldn't quite recall how to shut it. As she became aware of her own discourteous behaviour, her cheeks reddened further, and she space between her eyes began to throb.

Even though she averted her gaze as soon as she had a proper hold of herself, the damage had surely been done. Her breathing came quicker, and she forced her jaw to snap shut, although she couldn't quite conceal the slight grimace that accosted her when her teeth hit each other. The scowl was back, and in lieu of acting out again, Livia was now drumming her fingers against her desk as if that might keep her calm.

She made the mistake of glancing back towards Geneva, and she wished she could say it was because she was intrigued. All she could justify it with was one idiom that was rather veracious at the moment: Your ears must be burning. They certainly were, and although Geneva hadn't said anything to her, when Livia's eyes met the other girl's, she found herself simply apoplectic. Why was she smiling like that? Did Geneva have to be so perfect and, all the while, flout it in everyone else's face?

A huff of breath hissed from Livia's half-formed sneer as she once again narrowed her eyes and shot Geneva a nasty glare. Yes, yes – it was quite unladylike and certainly of the highest calibre of rudeness to indulge in such bastardly behaviour. But at this moment (and, for once in her twelve years of life), Livia could not have cared less about politesse. She did not bother to school her features into practised neutrality as she picked up her wand. A glower solidified itself onto her face as, determined to one-up Geneva, she murmured, 'Alohomora.' The word itself was pronounced without an ounce of imperfection, or so she thought. However, to her utter dismay, the lock remained locked in front of her, a testament to failure. Her expression darkening, she could not resist the urge to glance towards Geneva in hopes this catastrophe had not been witnessed.

It was better than she could've hoped. Although the classroom was busy, and she was surrounded by the sounds of rustling papers and murmured incantations, Geneva thought she could hear a sharp intake of air behind her as her locking charm succeeded. Glancing over her shoulder with a grin, she caught sight of Livia's comical expression of shock before the girl quickly looked away.

Perhaps it was slightly uncharacteristic of Geneva to be so vindictive. But if there was one thing she absolutely hated, it was people who were so full of themselves. So despite the slight tinge of her conscience at her behavior, she justified herself by the thought that Livia deserved it for being such a snob. It was high time for someone to knock her down a peg.

Before Geneva went back to her work, Livia had turned towards her again, this time looking her straight in the eye. The girl's face was painted with fury, so much so that Geneva was taken aback. It was one thing for Geneva to show off her skills a bit, but this girl seemed personally affronted! She couldn't have looked more hostile if Geneva had just slapped her in the face. Geneva felt her face redden. Who had given this arrogant girl the idea that she had the right to all talent?

She was about to turn away- she didn't want Livia to glean any enjoyment from her anger- but in a moment she was glad she hadn't, for Livia had raised her wand. With a scowl plastered across her sharp features, she muttered an incantation that Geneva could hardly hear. It came as no surprise when Livia's lock remained stubbornly closed- her casting had lacked conviction. Still, Geneva turned back to her desk with grim satisfaction. Serves her right.

The few minutes left in class were uneventful. Homework was assigned, and students started to pack their bags. As the first years began to file out of the classroom, Geneva couldn’t resist coming up behind Livia with a sympathetic smile. “I saw you were having trouble with your unlocking charm today, and I just wanted to say I’d be happy to help you with it outside of class,” she chirped. “Just let me know!”

The assignment of homework was a mercy; Livia wasted no time in quickly arranging her parchments into a neat stack. She ordered everything precisely as it belonged in her small messenger bag. The discomfort that plagued her was something she had not felt much since beginning her first year, and it reminded her of the time she had played piano for adults at a gala, and, when her finger had slipped, she had hit a disharmonious tri-tone instead of a perfect fifth. This was worse: instead of remaining stony-faced, as was her usual reaction to things, she had lost her cool, and others had been privy to such a contretemps.

Thus, she refrained from hurrying to leave. She waited, things mostly gathered, and steadied her breathing until she was finally able to look upon her departing classmates with tepid detachment. A gaggle of girls pushed through the door, and Livia still refrained, not wanting to be caught between so many individuals all at once. So focused was she on the flow of students exiting the classroom that she did not exactly realise Geneva was nearing her.

The other girl's voice made Livia stiffen, but she turned to face the far-smaller girl, hoping she did not appear too tense. She acknowledged Geneva's appearance before she could process the other girl's words. She found it quite difficult to fathom why Geneva might be smiling at her, but she tried to smile back for the sake of a decent interpersonal interaction. It did not reach her eyes. Only then did she finally register what Geneva had said. Help? Help!? Accepting help from someone who had witnessed that earlier fiasco was akin to just admitting failure; in other words, it was a non-option.

She set her jaw and hefted the strap of her bag over her shoulder, huffing a tired, weighty breath. 'Thank you, but I do not need your help,' she hissed, unable to keep her tone as flat as she would have preferred. After giving her desk a quick scan to ensure she had not forgotten anything, she would hurry after the departing students, unwilling to spend even another moment around Little Miss Perfect Geneva.

Geneva's offer of help was not well recieved- or, conversely, it was, for she'd gotten the reaction she'd been aiming for. She had, if not injured, at least insulted the tall girl's pride. But instead of a sense of victory, she still felt on edge, as if the young Slytherin's scales had been rubbed the wrong way. Although she'd come to terms with her Hogwarts house (in fact, it had become a second home), she had to admit that Livia's behavior was the kind she'd expected of all Slytherins when she first came to the school. Arrogance, conceit, disdainfulness and pride. Now that she knew her house was more than that, she was almost ashamed to have to share it with such a girl.

As she watched Livia's retreating back, her words still echoed in Geneva's ear. "Thank you," she had said, without an ounce of gratitude in her icy tone, "but I do not need your help." Well. Though it was likely obvious to both of them that Geneva's offer had hardly been genuine, Livia's statement was certainly untrue. Geneva could pick out at least five different things she'd done wrong in her casting, but the stuck-up girl would just have to figure them out herself. And if she couldn't manage it, all the better. Geneva stopped to give a polite smile to Professor Townsend before striding out of the room.
