The, recently turned, eleven year old liked it when everything fell into place; she loved order like nothing else. However, whenever she found herself in events that required using organizational skills, she'd often hear snide comments enter her ears. It could be from a family member, but also whoever she had mustered up to act in yet another play she wrote and got to perform at the local theater. Most of the kids disliked her stern tone and straight to the point attitude. Currently, she received plenty of commentary from her maternal grandmother, Maryvonne Beaumont. Apparently, the elderly lady decided to invite the Xiang family over for an easter dinner. She even got out her special dinnerware set for the occasion. Samantha, after at least an hour of getting ready, was tasked to set the dinner table. But it seemed like this task was yet again too much for the young girl to handle according to her grandmother. "Oh dear," grandmother Beaumont sighs and steps in besides Samantha while putting her ruby earrings in. "They are supposed to be placed the other way around, Samantha," she scolds the girl sternly as she shows her how the glasses should be placed; water on the the left side and red wine on the right while the glass for the white wine was placed below the two in the middle. "See Samantha, a downwards facing triangle. Now, if we had a champagne glass..." Samantha had stopped listening to her grandmother at that point, not bothered by how the table should be laid out. She just wanted to sit down and have this dinner over with. "Grandmother Beaumont?" She started sweetly after the elderly lady had finished her lecture on table etiquette. Receiving a hum from her grandmother, the girl continued. "How come you have hired two chefs for the dinner, but not any staff to accompany them? I mean, you don't want to let them think we're poor, do you?" "Oh, Samantha―" her grandmother's shrill voice entered her ears, causing the girl's nose to scrunch up slightly. Luckily, her mother steps into the dining room before Maryvonne could continue. "Samantha," Dianne laughed softly, "don't be rude and finish setting the table." As always, Samantha did as her mother asked. To her surprise, her mother seemed in a much better mood than usual. It was probably because Samantha's father, William, wasn't around. Not that Dianne didn't love him, no, she loved that man dearly, but Maryvonne would never stop with her puny insults if he attended the dinner as well. Aunt Lillian had finally come downstairs to join them as Samantha finally finished setting the table. "Ah, Lillian, there you are," her grandmother huffed out as she walked over to the blonde woman, fixing some of the creases already forming on her light blue cocktail dress. "You look wonderful aunt Lillian," Samantha's eyes sparkle as she looks at the wonderful dress her aunt is wearing. She looked like a fairy princess with the flowy fabric. Usually, she was allowed to call her auntie Lilly, but now that her grandmother was there, she wouldn't dare to. "Yes, yes," her grandmother waved her comment away with her hand as she frowned at Lillian, before smiling again. "You remember Elizabeth, don't you?" Lillian simply turns to Samantha, her eyes slightly hazy as she smiles at the girl, thanking her for the compliment before turning back to her mother. "Yes, mother, I do." Her tone is rather flat and bored. Samantha had assumed from this that she didn't like the woman, but she soon got to know why Lillian didn't exactly jump to talk about Elizabeth as her grandmother continued speaking. "Oh, yes, she is wonderful. Just like her mother, lovely woman that is," she almost beams. "So unfortunate she married Wenjian, your mother and her are very alike in what kind of person they decided to marry," she sighs at Samantha as Dianne's eyes harden at her mother's comment. While Maryvonne had nothing personal against William or Wenjian, she just couldn't seem to get over the fact that they were muggles."If only Elliot was still with us, we'd have something to be proud of." And just like that, before the dinner had even started, Maryvonne Beaumont had once again managed to turn everyone's smile upside down. Before either Dianne or Lillian could respond, the doorbell rung. "Oh, that should be them," Maryvonne exclaimed before hurrying to the door. Dianne stepped towards Samantha, placing a hand on her shoulder. "It will only take a couple of hours," she simply says before stepping towards the hallway to greet the freshly arrived guests. If her mother had intended it to come across as reassuring, Samantha hadn't perceived it that way. A couple of hours seemed torturous to have to simply sit and talk, as she assumed it did for every eleven year old. Luckily, her aunt nudged her side and told her Elizabeth had a daughter around her age. "Just try and talk to her and the dinner wil be over in no time," she whispered to the young girl with a soft smile before placing a hand on her back to lead her to the hallway to welcome the Xiang family. |
