The Thrill of Flight

It was another morning after the school break, Zephyr was already up earlier than most of the other first years. He was always an early riser, even when he was still on their farm in Swansea. He spent the school break bonding with his family, visiting their relatives and the town festival, and just playing with their animals. As much as he wanted to practice and train more in flying, he couldn't just do that while in the Muggle world, could he? And what was even more annoying was that he received a new broom as a gift and couldn't even use it there. As soon as he was back, he prepared for a day of practicing and training around the pitch, to get better at flying. That Saturday morning, the sky was clear, and the cool air made him feel awake and focused.

He dressed quickly, put on his jumper and trousers, and laced up his boots tightly. On his way out of the dorm, he grabbed his broom with that excited smile he couldn't get rid of. He ran a hand along it fondly, already feeling the familiar comfort in his grip. For him, a broom was no longer just a cleaning tool, it was now a form of transportation and an extension of him, and he wanted to treat it carefully.

Before taking off, he spent a few minutes stretching, just warming up and preparing for a few hours of training. What he learned so far was that, in flying, it's not as simple as holding on to the broom and leaning forward, you also need to know how to control and maintain your strength and how to read the air currents. The wind could help you or ruin you if you're not prepared.

It's also not about speed or daring maneuvers; he needs to understand himself, too, trusting his reflexes and predicting how the broom would respond to every possible situation. Every flight was a conversation with the wind, the better he understood it, the safer and freer he would feel.

Now that he had the taste of flying, quidditch and broom racing, he wanted to be more than just a casual flyer. He wanted to compete and join his house team. He wanted to feel completely confident in the air, to know every movement of the broom as instinctively as walking. He wanted to soar, to push himself, and maybe even teach others, one day, what he had learned on his journey.

He swung onto his broom as he gave a brief glance at the castle. The morning air smelled of frost and earth. He bent his knees, leaned forward slightly, and lifted off the ground, and as soon as he soared, he felt that familiar thrill of flight that nothing else could match. Today would be a good day to learn.
