Tenūsa was a second foreign school she visited. It was different both from Beauxbatons and Hogwarts. It was far and had some islands. The nature at first was looking friendly, yet changed to be frightening after some time. The days in this school were going not as Linda could ever expect. Nothing peaceful was in it and yet she wasn't sure how she felt. Now she feared that everything here was somehow connected and as if alive. She was tired and still trying to look like everything was under control. Another thing that bothered her was her bestie's behavior. It was obvious that something happened with her, as the girl Linda knew was nowhere close to her usual behavior. Linda had some guesses, but it was all just assumptions. She was worried, yet never asked any questions. Perhaps waiting Rey to tell her if and when she's ready, perhaps she was glad to just stay close. Her once happy bestie who used to talk and laugh a lot now was looking more distant. There was sadness in her eyes. It felt like there was more to it that Linda couldn't quite catch. Should she ask what happened? But she didn't ask. So far Linda chose to silently be there for Rey. Her bestie would tell her whenever she was ready. And if she didn't, it was going to be alright as long as they were staying best friends, right? Linda sighed. This circle of the same thoughts was starting to wear her off. But if it was what she was thinking it was, then there wasn't much she could do. And that little that she could do, she was doing it somehow. It was the best decision to give Rey space, she knew it. Though not knowing what happened was still adding to her worries. Memories, both happy and painful were flooding her mind now that they were going through dangerous experience, unable to sleep peacefully at night. Now she kept looking out for any shadow. Any smallest noise was making her feel tensed. Linda again started to go everywhere with her wand. Even laying on the bed having wand in her hands. Memories and fear were reminding her of how easy she could suddenly lose her best friend. Haunting her. Making her feel insecure. Would she be able to protect Rey if necessary? Or would she lose her? Just for a moment she imagined the life without Reyna. And it was a mistake as a sharp pain pierced her for a moment, making her stop thinking about it. This made her hopeful that she had enough strength to protect her bestie. Sigh left her lips and she glanced at the sky, glad no one was here to see her drowning in her memories. The summer they were spending at Reyna's house. They were both so happy, exchanging the gifts, building new plans. Days in Hogwarts that felt happy and safe, despite them going to Hogsmead just some months after tragedy. And now here, waking up to find something close to bed, someone dragged away. The fake sense of safety was now feeling unreachable. Unbeknownst to her, she soon would be joined by someone and she won't have time to dwell on the past anymore. However, until that moment came, she was sitting alone hidden from the view, making it perfect place to spend with herself. The smell was offering a fake sense of safety. Perhaps sitting alone wasn't the best idea, but she needed this time o settle her thoughts. To prepare herself to face whatever else could happen while they were on this trip. Closing her eyes she finally managed to relaxed. Yet still her wand was close to her hand, ready to be used in a second if needed. There was now a distant sound as if she was no longer alone. However instead of opening her eyes, she just continued keeping them close, enjoying the moment of silence before she would find someone near her. Will she ever feel more confident in her magic knowledge? Linda didn't know but hoped she would. |

Reyna had been pondering the best way to tell Linda about her miserable summer, all of the terrible things that happened ever since school had started, but she could not seem to find the words, the place, or the time to do so. Back when they had both arrived at Teñusa a few days ago, she had thought that this vacation was going to be relaxing and she could finally become happy. Oh, how Reyna was wrong. No one slept, and there was a reason for it. Monsters were under their beds, and if at any time they thought they were safe, they absolutely were not. She almost regretted coming to Teñusa, coming on this stupid trip. Because of it, she had one more nightmare to add to her recurring ones that haunted every minute of her life. Really, Reyna should see a therapist. Everyone but her had moved past the events of the summer. Her grandpa dying. The funeral. The journal. The only good things that had come out of it were Hans, who had almost been killed because of the stupid monsters, and the journal her grandpa left her. The journal had been filled with tidbits of information about his life and all of his healing tactics, whether illegal or legal. And now, they were all hers. Reyna could not get past a single day without thinking about him, and the only thing that helped was reading that journal. That was why she desperately needed to tell someone, to spill all of the very thoughts that were haunting her brain. And she knew she needed to tell Linda. It wasn’t that she hadn’t told anyone. She had told a few people; she just hadn’t shared the full truth, all of her thoughts. Reyna recalled Zephyr and their conversation at the beginning of the year, and she smiled. It had helped to get that weight off of her chest. But Reyna loved procrastination. Not by choice, but because of the fact that she was scared. She didn’t want to break apart her emotions, her thoughts, and her deepest fears into a million pieces. No. And talking about it made it seem real; it forced her to accept the fact that she would never, ever see her Grandpa again. Just thinking that gave her a heartache. Slowly, Reyna became braver. Slowly, she became better. Slowly, she found the courage to approach Linda when she was sitting alone. After all, it was the perfect place and the perfect time. Now, all she had to do was find the perfect words. Reyna stood there for some time behind Linda, unsure whether Linda even knew Reyna was there. But she found the words. She found the courage. “Hey,” she whispered to Linda finally, actually approaching her and sitting down. “Is this a good time to talk…?” Reyna fidgeted with her fingers, taking deep breaths to stabilize herself. She recalled her Grandpa’s journal, his words. She remembered dancing with Hans at the Gala, and most of all, she remembered the time when Linda and her friendship had been perfect. Like a cup of hot chocolate, her heart filled with warmth and joy, and suddenly, she felt ten times better. Linda had been trying all this time to help her, to offer her support. She had been nothing but an amazing friend. Reyna had been the shitty friend. Pushing Linda away, making Linda worry, and she knew it was her job to fix it. To restore their friendship. If she wanted to feel the warmth, the joy, and the perfect friendship again, she had to do this. She had to be brave. “I think I owe you an explanation…” she added, and she gave Linda a soft smile. “That is, if you are interested.” |

As the quiet voice of her bestie reached her ears, Linda opened her eyes. Hey. She replied with a soft smile on her face. Moving a bit closer to Reyna she moved her body a bit more towards her bestie. Was it an attempt to create more sense of safety? Or was it just to be able to see in advance whether some danger was approaching them? Linda didn't have the answer to these questions, nor they mattered at this moment. I think it is. We are alone here with a rare moment of safety. She let the words stay in the air. She wasn't going to rush her friend to speak. But she felt relieved as the thought of finally knowing what's been going on. However, at the same time she felt a bit nervous. What if her guess was right? Was she ready to hear it? Will she be able to find right words to support? But she knew she will. For the sake of both of them and their friendship she will find what to say when it was time to speak. Linda knew it was going to be a hard conversation as Reyna was seemingly preparing herself to share something that definitely wasn't the happiest moment. As a soft smile appeared on her bestie's face, Linda knew it was time to listen carefully to what was coming next. Answers. To the questions she had but never asked. Perhaps to the questions she didn't ask as well. Her worries were now about to be answered. Linda smiled encouraging her to speak and showing she was there. Ready to be there for Reyna. I'd appreciate it, specially if you are ready to speak. I'm here for you, Rey, so take as much time to share it with me. She offered a hug, not insisting, but inviting if Reyna wished to hug. In any other time she would simply hug her bestie, but now felt different. It felt more important. More sensitive. And so the simple hug was now carrying another meaning. A promise that was spoken aloud was now offered by action. Since it was going to be a hard conversation, perhaps Reyna would feel a little better feeling this promise from Linda. And so she was ready to listen. Her face was now relaxed. Her eyes only showing care and attentiveness. The place itself now felt like it decided to give them a moment of privacy. A moment to share things that were hard to be spoken about. The silence filling the space around them for a moment before Reyna would continue speaking didn't feel uncomfortable. Linda didn't even notice it. And I want you to know, I am with you and I am still planning to continue staying your bestie. |

It only took a minute of Linda’s comforting words and warming silence to let her spill the beans. She had kept it for so long, without telling almost anyone other than Hans about what had really happened to her. She was sure Linda knew her Grandpa had died. But the rest of the details… there was no way she knew. And she appreciated her being there despite how moody she might have been. “It started in June of last year. I received a letter from my mother stating my Grandpa was in the hospital because of an untreatable disease. I skipped a few days of school to go see him and when I was there…” Reyna tripped up her words and brushed away a small tear at what she was about to say next. She took a deep breath and continued. “The doctor told me he was going to die. He had a few more days left.” A tear rolled down her cheek. “I-I had to leave and go back to Hogwarts so I couldn’t watch him-“ Reyna couldn’t say it. She moved on, she was sure Linda knew what she meant. “It was difficult after that. Everyone was busy planning the funeral. My mother put me up to writing the eulogy. I-I guess I was okay then because I was doing something. The funeral itself was kept relatively small. Few family and friends but there was a lot of greeting people, which, I have to say I hated.” “But, I met Hans. He-“ she paused, “He helped me. And we became friends. And then I got back to school, and I just couldn’t live normally, couldn’t go back to how it was before. I felt like everyone but me moved on and I was just stuck, trapped in a hole with nowhere to go.” The story was getting more and more depressing by the minute. "And then there was the journal. " Reyna sighed, "My grandpa left me a journal with all his teachings, his healing notes and concoctions. And all for me. I read through it and have kept it close at all times. I feel better now, closer to him.But it'll hit me sometimes and I'Il just become sad. And sometimes I feel like I had the closest bond with my grandfather so maybe that’s why it’s affecting me this way.” She paused to breathe trying to stop the tears. There was a fire burning in her. She was so sad she was tired and angry. Tired of those stupid feelings controlling her life. She wanted to be happy like she was before, she wanted to repair her friendship with Linda, with all her friends. But all she felt was pain. And she didn’t know how to move on. But if Reyna was ever going to reach happiness, reach what she wanted, she had to push herself. And this was pushing herself. Revealing the real truth, blood, sweat and tears. And she hoped Linda would understand. |

Linda felt comfortable in the silence. It was inviting and not pushing. It still carried the sense of safety, even though today's meeting wasn't going to be easy. When Reyna started to share what happened, she listened attentively. There was no rush. They could sit here as long as they wanted to. The beginning of her bestie's sharing and how hard it seemed to talk about already were enough to let Linda have some answers. It was going to be only more hard and she already guessed what was the end of this sad and heartbreaking story. So she couldn't watch him in his last moment. Couldn't watch him leaving forever. Linda understood. It didn't have to be spoken out loud. Offering Reyna a hug she kept listening silently. Move on? That was hard expectations. It takes time. You will not feel better and happy in some months. Her voice was quiet with unspoken understanding. If it took her a year to accept her best friend's death, surely it would be around the same or even more for Reyna with her grandfather's death. Her own grandfather died long ago, she had no memory about it. It's okay if it takes you longer. I won't tell you that time will heal. In my experience it doesn't actually heal. You just learn to live with it, still missing, but gradually able to smile more and do things happily. She looked at Reyna and let her know that she was there for her. Rey, I value our friendship and our bond. Not just because of the happy times we spend together. So it's alright if you are not feeling happy. I'll just stay with you through this time. After all real friend wasn't going to leave once things are no longer as happy as they were. And they definitely had busy times earlier. But Linda didn't have anything to blame Reyna for. I just felt worried about you. So quiet voice filled with nothing but care. She had just a simple wish. To not lose Rey. Anything else Linda believed they could survive. She could handle anything else. |
