That meant it was the time of year to spend with your family, to be grateful they were there, But what happened if they weren't there. Physically, yes, they were there but emotionally? Hell no.
That had stopped ever since her brother Finn came to Ilvermorny, Her brother was better, smarter than her. Except no one recognized that it was her who had taught him everything. At least her brother was still nice to her.
And then there was the other problem. The nightmares she had been having of her and Kaya in the forest. Amber could not get them out of her head, she could not sleep, think, interact, and it was affecting everything. Her grades, her social life, her temper. And the two of those things fed into a fire, a hole of things burning as she walked through the campus that day. The nightmares caused her parents to hate her and that only made the nightmares worse.
As those thoughts filtered through her head that breezy day, as the leaves fell from the trees, a tear fell from Ambers eye but she brushed it away. The wind was marking it difficult to see and crying world not help. Crying didnβt help anyone. Emotions were useless.
She just has to bury it deep, forget about it, and somehow survive another miserable day. One day at time she would make it somewhere. To the good times, she hoped. And she kept walking, clinging to that single, small thread of hope, praying that she would one day reach the end.

β½Why was Dylan always in a dark place? That was something Dylan himself didn't know the answer to after everything that had happened to him in life. You'd think Dylan would have gotten used to it by now, but that was far from the case. If anything? He had learned to cope with his grief and pain more than push past it and go into the light.
Dylan didn't know what to do with himself as the news of his grandfather still swirled in his mind. It was supposed to be a time of thanksgiving. A time where Dylan was supposed to be spending time with friends and family and living his life, but he couldn't quite bring himself to even smile.
Nightmares still haunted his nights as he replayed what had happened at the wedding over the summer. It was a nightmare in itself. Haunting for a soon-to-be thirteen year old at the time. He could still hear Avery's screams and the cries of help from people around him as he faded in and out of consciousness. That day had been his closest encounter with death. He was a lucky survivor of the cursed event when so many did not suffer the same fate.
A broken sigh escaped Dylan's lips as he kept his head pointed toward the ground. His mind observed the blades of grass that were crushed beneath his feet.
Of course he was too late to notice that someone else was on his path. How typical of him to only notice someone the second he crashed into them.
"Oh! I'm so sorry I didn't see you there. Are you okay?" He asked with a blink of surprise.
A girl with fiery red hair stood before him. She was older. Probably a third or fourth year by the look of her, but he wasn't completely sure. He just hoped he hadn't hurt her. His reckless behavior of not paying attention to his surroundings was something he made a mental note to himself to attempt to keep in check, but with his luck? Well, that probably wouldn't be the case. β½

But obviously none of that was appropriate to say to someone you had just met, or just crashed into for that matter. βIβm all right. Thank you. Are you okay?β She asked.
As she looked into his eyes, she saw pain, she felt it, down tot he core of her body. A similar pain that she felt in her own self. Suddenly she felt the urge to talk to him, to talk to someone about this⦠this predicament she was facing with her parents.
Maybe this was a sign. But she couldnβt bring herself to start ranting, to burden this guy who was clearly younger than her, who clearly did not deserve to know about the terrors of her past, her nightmares. She didnβt want to make him feel any more miserable than he already was. It was a war against herself.
βWhere were you heading? Perhaps, we might be going in the same direction?β Amber asked.
It was a distraction. A way to avoid the thoughts she was having and possibly a way to keep this boy here and talking to her. She didnβt want to leave. She couldnβt leave. She still felt the lingering tears in her eyes, which she hoped were not too evident.
She should have been strong and walked away and kept on going with her life. But for some reason, she couldnβt. She was tired of being alone. She was tired of running away. Amber was tired.

β½Dylan felt the darkness creeping closer. Threatening to consume him whole. There would be no stopping the darkness from spreading within him. Breaking down every wall and consuming every last drop of light within him. Times were hard. Desperate. He was barely keeping his head above the waves that threatened to pull him under and never allow him back to the surface. If he let go, he would succumb to that fate. He would lose everything.
He barely heard the older girl ask if he was alright. There was something about the softness in her voice as if she understood the pain that brought him off the edge. "Oh, um, well, no. Not really fine, but I'll survive. I always have." Dylan responded. He winced. It was far from the ideal response that the girl was most likely looking for, but he was just being honest. Even if he was being far from completely honest. If he was completely honest, his world would crash down all around him and bring everyone else that cared about him down with him.
Why did things have to be hard in life? Why could he not still live in the good times. The times where he, his grandfather, and his cousin used to spend hours exploring the woods without a care in the world. What had happened to the young and innocent little boy that could not bear to see someone hurt without even a scratch. The thing was? That little boy grew up too quickly. Too quickly for his own good.
He had lost his boyish charm and traded it for the shell of a man he was now. What had happened to him? Well, that lay deeper than most people saw. Pain, anguish, sorrow, and being stripped of the one place he felt safe and at home.
Dylan had nearly died the past summer. He could still hear the pain in Avery's voice as she screamed his name and begged him to keep holding on. That wedding had been bad. If it hadn't been for Avery and Mikey working swiftly to try and save him, he would not be standing right there in the moment pushing through all his pain and sorrow. Sometimes Dylan wondered if the young boy had died in that cursed wedding. That was the easy way to cover up what had actually happened to him.
Dylan blinked for a moment. Where had he been going? What had he been doing before he stumbled upon the older girl? Well, he did not know the answer to his own question. How typical. "Well, I don't know. I guess I was just wandering?" Dylan was questioning himself. What was going on with him? Why was he falling apart and unraveling right now in front of a girl that probably thought he was going crazy because he could not hold himself together another moment longer.
"Well, I guess my manners left when we bumped into each other. Sorry about that. I'm Dylan. Dylan Astor." Dylan sighed again. It seemed he had been doing a lot of that lately. Maybe it was his sign of resignation or the fact that he was finally succumbing to the darkness. Letting it consume him slowly. Painfully. Piece. By. Piece.
Dylan shook his head. Breaking free of the thoughts that consumed him as he looked into the older girl's eyes. Deep within he thought he recognized the pain that lay beneath the surface. A pain close to his own. Maybe he was not alone in this. Maybe there was something that understood him. β½
