Nerves in Conversation

Secene: Great Hall
Section: Slytherin Table
Point of View: Piper Clarkwood, third person

I was walking to the Great Hall, my Slytherin scarf neatly tucked in to my house robes. "Hey, Piper!" A Slytherin greeted me as I arrived at the Slytherin table and sat down. I was shy, as usual, so I just did a sheepish smile and looked around, trying to avoid people's gazes.

It was very pretty, and some of the Christmas decorations were still up; it was only a couple of days after Christmas after all. During the setup, Piper remembered, a balloon had untied from its string and flew to the ceiling.

Oh, and there it is! On the ceiling, nearly touching a floating candle, was the green and red balloon that had untied from its string. I giggled. "What'cha giggling abou'?" A Hufflepuff asked. "Oh, nothing," I replied quickly. I didn't know any of these students, yet they kept on talking to me. Why?

Couldn't I be left in peace and quiet, where I wouldn't worry about what to say, how to react, and all of that? Why did people want to talk to me now? The Hufflepuff walked away, looking sad, so I said, "It's nothing too funny, I promise."

Why was the Hufflepuff so sad? But anyway, food had just appeared on her table so she decided to eat it. After breakfast, I went to the Hufflepuff table, just to make sure they weren't sad still. They weren't, as a matter of fact, they were laughing and giggling at the balloon to!

I smiled, then followed my house back to the common room, glad I was brave enough to talk to another student. I guess I'll keep getting comfortable, one awkward conversation at a time, until I can speak with any student without being nervous.

My name is Piper Clarkwood. I am a Ravenclaw, always will be. I was placed in Slytherin because my brother, fiddled with the buttons. I am very intelligent and pretty creative. You'd find me sitting at Ravenclaw tower with my new friend, Julia Evans.
