To Walk with a Stranger

Frost and Alexx had met only moments prior, but the two were quick to chat. Alexx was fond of the Hufflepuff's kind nature, how she had seemed so open to speaking with her. It wasn't every day that someone walked up to Alexx and started a conversation with her. She was approachable, this was true, but not many other students might have agreed. It had only depended on their history together. But seeing as though the blond and the ginger had no history at all, that might have been what made the encounter easier.
Small hands found their way into jean pockets, protecting their fingers from the icy breeze. "Remind me of what they call you; you are Frost, yes?" She asked in her thick, French accent. Alexx only vaguely knew of Frost, but that was all. Like most, she had seen her in the corridors to and from class most likely, but forgot immediately after. How was she to remember every single student? Not every face stuck out. And it wasn't as though Frost was easily forgettable, but it was more the case that she was not so far out of the ordinary that Alexx would recall ever seeing her. If the student in question had never been caught by Alexx breaking the rules, then their face would not stick. That was good on Frost's part.
"Je m'apelle Alexx," She continued, smiling as they walked. "enchantée." It was a habit for Alexx to speak in French. Her mother made a habit of reminding her how important it was to keep their culture close; that when she was to introduce herself, it must be in French. Most people could guess easily what she meant, however, as they either knew the language or were smart enough to use context clues.
Leaves crunched under her feet as she stared off into the distance, not making eye contact. Alexx was bad at looking people in the eye. It made her shift uncomfortably, and she would always quickly look away. It was one thing her mother despised more than most. Eye contact was key. It went hand in hand with speech, and if you could talk, you were convincing. Alexx was convincing enough without the eye contact, however. You had to be in her situation.
If there was one thing that drew her attention, it was that small thought in the back of her mind that demanded to know why Frost approached her to begin with. Was it just that she knew no one else that was there? Or was she just friendly? Alexx could only assume that the latter was the case, as this Frost character seemed the type to just be friendly. It was a quality that Alexx did not so possess. Despite that, she wished she did. Alexx envied those who had that natural knack to being friendly.
But she did fine on her own, whether or not she was just naturally friendly. She had friends just the same, and kept her appearances up. It was not a concern to her as to whether or not someone considered her to be nice. The definition of "nice" varied anyway. Who was to say who was nice and who wasn't? Some thought Alexx nice, others didn't. Alexx didn't think many people were nice, but those many people basically ran the school and had more friends than Alexx had fingers. So who was to accuse one of being nice or not? Nice was but a label that wrongfully belonged to many and haunted the few who deserved it. She did not wish herself the burden of such. The only name Alexx would drag was her own, nothing more and certainly nothing less.
And it was degrading to be told whether or not you were something. You should be able to make that decision for yourself. But you couldn't say "I'm nice" because in reference to yourself, you probably think that you are, though others may think the opposite. Were we to trust the way you perceived yourself or who you were to others? And then were we to truth others if humans are ignorant and discriminate against one another to benefit their own appearance? It was unfair to make that choice for someone.
But Frost was nice, and Alexx would be lying if she said otherwise. Many probably thought so, and Frost may or may not be among that crowd. If she was, it was good for her. It was always good to admit to what you were. And Alexx was comfortable thinking this because she accepted that she was only human, and she labled those around her regardless of whether or not she believed in it. Alexx would not claim to be a saint. Not today, not tomorrow, not ever. It was better that way.

To Walk with a Stranger
Things were much less complicated on Frost's point of view. She had no experience with the art of overthinking. Never had she dug what was beneath what was visible. Everything just came easy to her. She had just made everything seem so simple when things just weren't.
The blonde had just looked approachable to her and, of course being herself, that was enough for her to spark up a conversation. Maybe she knew that she looked a bit lonely. It was only her nature to try and make the lonely a little less lonely. She nodded. "Mhm! Frost is my name but call me what you'd like, I guess." The redhead grinned when she had introduced herself in French. It must have been Alexx's first language. Mother had always wanted Frost to learn French fluently, but she simply liked learning Italian better. Not that it wasn't a lovely language, just that it was hard for someone of such a young age to balance learning Italian and French. Not to mention English as well.
But now that she was practically fluent in Italian and English, she had picked up some French from her mother and actually started learning just a bit. The girl knew enough to understand what Alexx was saying, but that was an easy phrase after all. "Alexx est un beau nom. Est-ce un surnom?" Her smile persisted, like always. Some would think it a weapon only a few had the ability to use properly. Maybe it was like a hammer chipping away at the ice around some of the hearts of people. But never would she forget when her mother told her that smiles could cut just as deep as knives. Why would anyone want to cut people? Smiles couldn't be that dangerous could they?
"Êtes-vous parler couramment le français, ou que vous aimez tout simplement d'introduire-" Her face went a little bit blank. She didn't know enough French to finish that sentence. But she meant to ask if she actually knew any French or just liked to introduce herself like that. But she assumed that she actually was fluent because of her accent. Frost cleared her throat. "Vous parlez au moins un peu anglais?"
The girl honestly didn't mind that Alexx looked anywhere but her eyes. She knew that everyone was different in their own way and would never get bothered by someone just being themself. Alexx seemed, so far, to be unlike herself in some ways. The blonde wasn't seemingly as open as she was. Not that it was a bad thing, but it just got her thinking if she herself was just a bit too approachable. But merely a more 'up in her thoughts but feet still firm on the ground' type of girl. There was something to her that just made her want to think. But it was a bit too soon to try and read her. Heck, she barely ever saw Alexx. Maybe once or twice in the halls before or maybe in classes, but other than that, nothing.
While most had more complex minds that thought about the universe or whatever, Frost didn't mind working with what a simple mind she had. Not that she thought she had a simple mind, just simply couldn't comprehend what some others could. Simple as in not very smart or wanting to discover what was to be discovered. No, not just yet had her mind developed that much. In terms of the open-mindness, that was something the ginger definitely had. A simple, but open mind. And Frost was alright working with what she had for now. There was no point in just waiting for knowledge to grow by itself.

To Walk with a Stranger
Alexx could have burst out laughing. Was she fluent in French? Did she speak English? This girl was funny. "Of course I speak English! I would not go to a primarily English speaking school if I didn't!" She responded, chuckling. "And yes, I am fluent in French. Hell, I hope I am at least. I am French." Furrowing her eyebrows together, she thought about it. Was her French accent not a giveaway? Was she not French enough? How does one present themselves as French, anyway?
"But oui, it is a shorter version of my given name, which was dropped a long time ago to make just 'Alexx.' I prefer it that way." She responded, smiling softly. Only her family called her by what was her given name. She disregarded the name long ago as it did not please her. Now, most people did the same. "However, I must confess you liking your name much more than my own. It is unique in its own manner." Her compliment was sincere, but it felt rather dry and emotionless. It was not often that she complimented people. Kind mannerisms made her appear stiff and blank as if she were a lifeless corpse stuffed with cotton. It left a dry taste in her mouth, which she did not like at all. Every part of the process made her want to spit out her own words and scrape her tongue clean, even though such phrases were made to be as sweet as sugar.
A sigh pushed out of her, as it did quite often. It was clear by now the way she carried herself and went about making a conversation, though it seemed to be going as smoothly as any. At least, that was her take on it. She had definitely been a victim to worse cases. A slave to silence, no one could fault a learner. Thoughts ran through her, wanting to make her worry that she was boring Frost, or that perhaps she was not an ideal conversation partner (which, in all fairness, she would not blame Frost if she were to think that way, as she would probably think the same). But she would, nonetheless, thank Frost later for her patience, because she wasn't showing any social cues that would make anyone think that she was bothered; at least not in Alexx's eyes. In fact, the oddly comfortable setting, or perhaps vibes, even, that Frost let off, was allowing Alexx to ease into a conversation. Though it was a slow ease, it was progress none the less.
Deciding it was high time to change the conversation, because they were long past the introductory stages, Alexx coughed. "Might I inquire as you how you learned French?" She asked, genuinely curious. It wasn't like not many people here knew it, as she could probably name a handful that she knew of alone, but it was always interesting to hear where they picked it up. Of course, Alexx was French, so her methods of learning were no secret - it was a language she was brought up with. Some had family members in France, others were rich and their parents hired them private tutors, or some lived in France for a while (or visited often). There was a story and culture behind everyone, and it fascinated her.

To Walk with a Stranger
Oh, why had she not thought of that before asking her? What a strange mind the ginger had kept up in her head. Of course, Alexx spoke English, she was speaking it earlier at the campfire too. How silly it was for her to forget about that. Though she had always had a talent of remembering names and little odd facts about people, it did seem like sometimes she let information go in one ear and out the other. "You are? That's awesome!" Her face lit up and the pace of her walking speed sped up. The redhead didn't want to assume, but it did make sense because Alexx seemed to have a bit of a French accent.
In her opinion, Alexx was wonderfully cool or, how she preferred to say it, Awesome as heck. Even her name had an extra 'x', that totally made it cooler than a regular old 'Alex'. It was like in the animated films where a person got shiny eyes with stars in them, because that's exactly what Frost was like in this situation. "Yeah, your name is still cool as just 'Alexx'." The compliment that the other girl had given to her name didn't seem natural for Alexx. Though she was oblivious to most things, it was easy for the girl to spot forced words, unless they were good at covering it up. "Ah, thank you! I like your name too. I think you have a unique name as well."
It was quite obvious that though they were the same age, or just about, the blonde seemed to carry herself in a much more mature manner than Frost, who was undoubtedly quite childish. It was even more obvious whenever she was interacting with someone who wasn't. And in this case, that person was Alexx. "Oh? 'Cause my mum is French and says that she wants me to learn. She says it's useful. I think French is pretty too. Though I'm just starting to learn it. Sometimes I mix up French with some Italian if I don't remember the words." The girl let out a quiet sort of laugh at the last sentence.
It was true, she barely knew much of the beautiful language. Though now she did kind of regret not learning French while she learned Italian. Though it would have been quite a lot of work for such a young girl, she could have probably by now be able to speak both.ReducioOOF very sorry this took me forever. It's just... life xD
