Laasya climbed onto the Hogwarts Express as soon as her parents stopped hugging her. She, along with all the wizards and witches entered the train and scrambled to find a compartment. Luckily, Laasya managed to find one that was empty, as Pearl did not get her needed sleep and was meowing very loudly. “Shush!! You’ll disturb everyone else!” Said Laasya while trying to calm the grumpy cat down. Eventually, Pearl finally began to sleep, but then the train passed through a bumpy area, causing Pearl to wake up and start meowing. Laasya sighed as she tried to coax Pearl to go back to sleep.
After some time the trolley cart with all of the goodies arrived at Laasya’s compartment. It was filled with sweets of every kind. Laasya spent a minute trying to decide what to eat as she was never allowed too many sweets back home. She finally settled for a pumpkin pasty.
Laasya began to think about her memories back at her home in East London, most which weren't very nice. She was lonely back home, except for a muggle girl named Amber. She remembered how Amber would always sneak her cookies and chocolates, would come to her house every Saturday to hang out and they even played a prank on Amber’s older brother once after he told them both to be quiet. No one found out it was them. Laasya would have loved to tell Amber about her Hogwarts letter but she was at her grandma’s home for the summer and there was no signal to call her over the phone.
The noise of someone approaching her compartment brought Laasya back to reality. Laasya was thinking in her mind “Maybe I’ll make another friend.” Laasya waited in suspense for them to knock or continue moving to another compartment.

Denise was scared... No, absolutely terrified. She stood there alone, coming by herself since she didn't want to bring her grandmother. Her grandmother, adamant that magic isn't "real" or claiming that there is only "black magic" with nothing in between, didn't know that Denise was by herself in the hidden Hogwarts Express and thought that she was in a public express in London instead.
Denise, who was confused at first, after finally following a wizard family (well, you could tell from miles away with their clothes and well, the owl in the cage) got there, late but there. She looked around, still terrified and nervous about what it is to come. She knows everything will change, and she still wanted to hug that old life of security of knowing everything in the non-magical world, well they call it “muggle” apparently.
Denise, with her heavy and battered trunk after a few tries, was finally able to push it up into the train and stare. Everyone was chattering loudly, familiar with everything, friends, classmates, teachers, well… this new world. Denise knew that making friends might be difficult, since she didn't know that she was a witch until about several weeks and was a social recluse in her own hometown.
She wandered around, hoping to see an empty compartment but it didn’t help that she came in late. There was no empty compartment. After two tries, giving up her search, she saw a compartment in the distance with only one other girl through the foggy window. Well… it’s better to knock now, Denise had to sit somewhere. She knocked nervously and the door opened. She said and waited for the response, “Hello, my name is Denise Yarbrough, I’m a new student so sorry for bothering you. Ca-can I sit here?”

The girl had asked Laasya if she could sit there. And she was also new like her!
“Sure! You can come in!” Replied Laasya cheerfully. “Hi! I’m Laasya and you must be Denise, right?” “My parents aren’t wizards or witches, but somehow I ended up one! I remember getting my Hogwarts letter that day from a professor and my parents being so confused. Well, I hope they aren’t now that my shopping at Diagon Alley is completed, hopefully they know a bit of the wizarding world.” Laasya began. She wondered if she should slow down a bit but excitement got the better of her.
“So you like sweets? My parents never let me have too many but they let me once in a while!” Continued Laasya. “What about your family? Were they wizards or muggles like my family? And what about friends? Did you have any? I didn’t have too many, only like one.” Added Laasya.
The train then unfortunately passed over a bump, and Laasya’s cat Pearl, who was sleeping next to her to jolt awake and since she only got a low 1 hour of sleep, as expected she started meowing loudly. “Sorry, sorry. She is quite cranky if she does not get her sleep.” Said Laasya while trying to calm Pearl down.

Denise felt good listening to someone who wanted to talk to her. And she was relieved that Laasya was just like her, having no idea about the wizarding world until several weeks ago. Denise replied, “I grew up with my grandmother. My grandmother was confused too. Like really confused. She thought the professor was lying until the professor performed a levitating spell which made her pass out right then and there.” Denise paused, thinking of maybe not going too personally to mention that she went to Hogwarts and lied to her grandmother who, after becoming conscious of still not believing that it happens. Denise still couldn’t believe that she was a witch who can perform magic, something that Denise thought was only true for books, dramas, and movies, not actual real-life.
As she and Laasya brought sweets and saw that Laasya liked them too. “I love sweets. My grandmother was cautious too, like your parents since well, they are bad for you. I don’t have any friends that are witches, just muggles. I don’t have any friends in my village either and I don’t think I could maintain a friendship back home since I would be at a far distance from them, I did have a few friends at a local hospital, but they were terminally ill, so we grew apart over time.” Well, technically speaking, they started to avoid her after her first instance of magic, which was well, rather violent since she burned a girl’s clothes on fire, making her an outcast in her own home. Denise was relieved to hear that she was not alone, that she was there with Laasya who likely also had crazy outbursts of magic and it was great and everything.
“Your cat is very cute.” Denise complimented as she petted Laasya’s cranky gray and black striped cat when the train jolted.
“The professor also spoke about houses and I did some research. Apparently, they are a big deal here. The Gryffindors are supposed to brave, like famous figures like Harry Potter, Ron Weasley, and Hermione Granger who defeated dark and evil wizards. Most are famous. Ravenclaws are supposed to be smart while Slytherins are supposed to be cunning, and a stereotype for being evil apparently? Hufflepuffs, I couldn’t pull much but they are kind. I honestly don’t know which house I’ll get into. Honestly, I think I might just cry at the thought of the hat telling me that I don’t have to go home because I’m actually… well… a witch.” Denise rambled in fascination.
Denise continued, “I have no idea which house. Maybe Ravenclaw, I think I’m smart. I had a teacher, Ms. Higgins, she was my favorite and I learned that I like biology and science. I’m not good at math though, eugh.”
“What about you, Laasya?” Denise enquired.

Well, that was a relief, Denise was not irritated by Laasya’s cat’s meowing. And the two were getting along perfectly. “Me? I don’t really know which house I want to be sorted into, let me think.” Laasya answered to her new friend’s question. She thought for what seemed about a million years then said “Maybe Ravenclaw because I’m pretty smart like you. Or Hufflepuff cause I like the idea of loyalty and hard work.” The train continued moving and Pearl started to sleep without any disturbance.
“By the way, sorry if this seems rude but what did you light fire on the girl’s clothes for? Just curious, if you don’t want to answer it’s fine.” Laasya added.
Eventually the train passed through some rocky areas and alas, Pearl woke up and started meowing loudly yet again. Laasya sighed as she tried to coax her to go back to sleep. “By the way want an every flavor bean? I heard there are some that taste like trash. Hope I don’t get one.” Laasya reached into the bag and pulled out a bean. She tasted it, “Cherry, thankfully.”
“By the way, I think we have to change into our robes for the Sorting Ceremony, I saw some students wearing them and they look classy.” Laasya added.
Eventually the train finally reached Hogwarts. “Bye! Best of luck at the Sorting!” Laasya waved to her friend as she got off the train.

Denise thought about Laasya being in Hufflepuff or Ravenclaw, which honestly was not a bad fit, considering Laasya’s personality, based on what Denise knew about her.
Eventually, Denise got comfortable enough to speak about the girl she set her clothes on fire, “Well, I didn’t mean to light her clothes on fire… I was upset, and it just lit, which surprised everyone. That girl was a bit of a bully, so she blamed me even though everyone saw that I didn’t use a matchstick and do it physically, but I did it accidentally through magic.”
But honestly, that incident didn’t matter anymore to Denise. She will be part of a new community of friends and magic, everyone who is just like her and has faced her experiences. Suddenly, Denise didn’t feel so lonely, finally leaving her village of Comrie in the southern highlands of Scotland. Laasya offers her a bean, which is, well, Every Flavor Bean apparently. Denise cautiously took the red one, hoping it would be a decent flavor, and spat it out. “Eugh, it’s chili.”
Denise did not have a good spice tolerance, so she had to get some pumpkin juice to cool her tongue down, and she realized that she would never drink pumpkin juice again; it tasted disgusting. Soon, Laasya and Denise changed into their robes, and Denise couldn’t help but admire herself in the window reflection, feeling new and excited.
Soon, the train stopped. There stood a magnificent castle, it was… beautiful, more beautiful than anything Denise saw in Comrie. Denise waved bye to Laasya before following all the other first-years to the boat to Hogwarts. Denise was nervous but also enthralled by the possible adventures of what was to come.
