It was a warm summer day. The week before she'd talked with Simon, how he was only ever an owl away, except she didn't have an owl... and muggle post wouldn't work to find wizardry addresses right? She'd written out many letters to her friends pouring out her heart into them. But never sent them, only because she couldn't, not without an owl.
Once her mother left for work, Emiline grabbed her bike and cycled the 15 minute route towards London and before she realised it she was in Diagon Alley. She knew what she had come to get, but which type? There was the small scrawny ones she'd seen flying overhead at breakfast many times over her two years at Hogwarts. The snow-white ones just seemed too pretentious for her liking, like don't look at me like that bird, geez.
Feeling the weight of the money in her pocket, she pushed open the door for the Magical Menagerie and is met by the warm smell of animals, which makes her nose crinkle. How the owners could spend their whole time in this shop was beyond her. Stepping inside with a sigh, she looked at the many caged rats to her right. The image of them trapped made her think of a video she was forced to watch about battery hens. However, these rats have lots more space and weren't being sold to become chicken nuggets or an egg producer.
To her left she saw a variety of different cats which Emiline gave a wide berth. When she was younger she went to go pet a stray cat with really fluffy fur and the cat bit her fingers hard, she still has a faint scar from it on her left index finger. Moving quickly past the cats, her eyes landed on the vividly coloured Pygmy Puffs. With a grimace she turned away from them, way to bright and energetic for what Emiline needed a pet for. As she stepped back, she nearly bumped into the toads and lizards- Why anyone would choose to have them is beyond Emiline. Toads are just..... ew. And lizards don't do much, other than eat, sunbathe and sleep in her opinion.
With a shudder she moves further into the shop, to the owl section. Her heart quickens as she knows the reason she's getting this pet, not because she wants to, because she needs to. She needs a way to be connected to her friends when she's not in Hogwarts. She needs to be able to talk to someone, anyone when it gets too much. Looking at the many types of owl, the small screech one was off her list, along with the fluffy-eared one, he just looked mean. The snow-white owls looked nice, but the cleaning not happening. The Barred Owl was a definite no as those eyes were just creepy.
Then she saw the one she needed. The one with speckled brown feathers and beady yellow eyes staring right at her. Like it understood why she needed an owl. "Hey owl, I hope you like lots of flying." She laughs softly, but subtly checks the owl's wings to see if they won't be strained. "Come on then" She said to the owl, "Let's get you home"
