Winding Fog
A couple weeks before receiving her Hogwarts letter, Aliyah sat perched on the roof of her family’s home, an activity she had technically been banned from doing annoyed one too many frantic searches, but the view of the fields, the rocks, the mist, and the sea was too good to resist.
Watching a great storm tumble in from over the sea, she slipped down, knowing that such a storm would knock her down from the roof. As she slipped back into the house, she felt a strange presence behind her, like a small creature watched her go.
The next day, there was a heavy fog, brought by the storm. The cliffs were shrouded in mist, so Aliyah’s family warned her not to go outside. She went anyways, wanting to explore the creature in the fog. She spent the whole day searching to no avail, only catching a glimpse of a feathery tail and small paws. Her first thought was a cat, but no cat would venture this close to the cliffs with the fog endangering every step.
Days passed looking for this strange creature, but as the fog faded away, so did sightings of the cat-like creature. Aliyah had grown up wanting a cat and fed several strays over the years, but had never felt so invested in following one.
Once her letter came, the hunt for the mysterious cat was forgotten in a whirlwind of travel and shopping and preparation for the upcoming school year.
Her parents took her to Diagon Alley for the first time, where they looked at books and robes and at the end of the day, they went to the pet shop. Her parents asked her if she wanted a cat, but Aliyah said no, much to their surprise. No cat could replace her family while she was at school.
It was only during the giant storm a few days before leaving for Kings Cross that Aliyah remembered the fog creature she had chased for so long. Slipping out of the house and into the ominous fog, she walked over to the cliffs, sitting in the edge of one. Behind her, there was a small, furry silvery ca with dark grey markings, looking like it had faded out of the mist. A silver siberian, if she remembered correctly. The only car that could enjoy the icy Irish weather. Realizing that the cat had been following her, Aliyah grinned. She had found her cat.
