The scratchy material of the letter weighed her hands down, the parchment slipped under the crevice of Ava’s door in the early hours of the morning to be discovered by her. Messy handwriting was scrawled on the front of the envelope, and opening it confirmed her suspicions. As her eyes jumped and skipped around the page, she discovered a short note written by Colin, surprisingly asking her to meet him.
He was lucky she wasn’t the type to do her hair or wear makeup, or else the short notice on the note would have surely deterred her from going. Dressing in a pair of jeans and a lavender sweater, she was hoping that when he had said to meet by the Great Lake, it hadn’t meant they would be entering said water. Although the chill of winter hadn’t yet arrived, she wasn’t partial to the idea of being soaked to her skin so early in the morning.
The last time they had ‘talked’ near the water, it had ended…interestingly enough. Neither held feelings for the other, or at least Ava didn’t for Colin. Unlocking the door to her dorm and slipping out quietly, she couldn’t help but feel anticipation pool in the pit of her stomach. Remembering their quickly exchanged glance at the opening ceremonies, she was certain he had something to say. Perhaps she did, too.
The morning sunlight filtered through dew-dampened grass as she trekked down to the lake, and she wasn’t surprised to discover she was the first there. She clutched the note tightly in her fist and chewed nervously on her bottom lip as the seconds crawled by.
