”No amount of peace last for too long”
────────────────────────────────────────────────
𝓔katerina was seated in front of the willow tree, sketchbook in one hand and one of her paintbrushes in the other. Her watercolor paints at her side, with different-sized paintbrushes nearby. Ekaterina sat peacefully, the wind blowing in her hair, as she continued painting. It was rare to find peace like this in the castle because it is so loud, and everyone is always so rushed and about. It is always chaos in there. So anytime she was overwhelmed, she would come outside, find a relaxing spot, and paint. Right now, she was in front of the willow tree, halfway through her painting.

The wind blew softly through her silky, blonde hair with each stroke of her brush; her painting of the willow tree came to life more and more. She added subtle touches of complementary colors to her canvas, giving the painting a realistic look. She said all sorts of colors to make it look lively, yellows, reds, and even subtle hints of pink.

Everything was perfect, peaceful, serene, and calm. But then again, no amount of peace lasts for too long. As she was halfway through her painting, she heard the rustling of grass and the crunching of fallen leaves underneath feet. It was unmistakable; someone or something was coming towards her very location. However, Kat did not panic; she was silently hoping that whoever or whatever that was approaching her would just walk around her and leave her to continue her painting. She did not want unnecessary conversations with anyone, well, except maybe the person who came out was a professor. You see, Ekaterina had not made a single friend or acquaintance since her arrival at Hogwarts. And no, it was not because of her family's reputation, and it was most certainly not because of her looks, that much was quite obvious.

It was because she kept pushing people away. Multiple people have tried befriending her before, but it always ended in one word or no words at all. The word being "No" or her just walking away. You may think she is rude and a snob, but it's the opposite. She is just too shy and socially awkward, and doesn't know how to hold a conversation. So any time a student came up to her brain entered fight or flight mode, and it always picks flight. So she just hoped whoever was coming to her would just walk past her and leave her alone.

Zephyr didn’t have any real plans that afternoon. His classes were done, and he didn’t feel like going back inside the castle yet. Outside was easier and calmer, it usually reminded him of home. So he decided to walk around the school grounds like he usually did when he needed a break. The air was colder now but the sky was clear. He instantly relaxed with every step he took while kicking at a few loose pebbles on the path, hands in his pockets, humming a small tune under his breath without really thinking about it.

He passed by the lake and checked on a group of ducks he saw earlier in the week, and then headed toward one of his preferred spot—the willow tree. He liked climbing it sometimes. There was one strong branch he always sat on where he could sketch or just watch other students from far away where no one bothered him. Today he wasn’t planning to climb, but he wanted to sit at the base of the tree for a while, maybe doodle something or sleep. He didn’t care which. When he got closer, he slowed down. Someone was already there. A girl.

She was sitting in front of the willow tree with canvas and paints all around her. She was focused and for a second, he thought he should just turn around and leave. He didn’t want to interrupt someone else’s peace, especially someone who looked like she needed it. Not to interrupt her, he took a lighter step back then froze when he stepped on a crunchy leaf. Great, now she definitely heard me. He saw her shoulders stiffen, even though she didn’t turn around. He took a deep breath and stepped a little closer enough that she could hear him clearly.

“Um… sorry, I didn’t mean to scare you. I didn’t know someone was here.” Still unsure if he should stay or leave. “I usually come to this tree to sit or draw,” using his honest voice, “but I can go somewhere else if you want the space. I don’t want to interrupt your painting.” He glanced at her canvas. Even from where he stood, he could tell it looked good, much better than what he could do. “That’s really nice, by the way,” A bit shy. “The painting. You’re good at it.” He waited, unsure what she would say, but in the back of his mind, he was already preparing to walk away if she wanted to be alone. It’s not in his nature to push people. He knew what it was like to need peace and quiet but he hoped she didn’t think he was being rude.
