A Familiar Face

@Rosaline Everhart

𝓙t was bright and early when Samantha headed downstairs to the Great Hall to indulge in some breakfast. Her stomach was growling even though the sun had only just begun to rise.

She had been at Hogwarts for a while now, but her eyes were still drawn to the ceiling. It had an early morning fog hovering over the students as of now. There weren't many students in the Great Hall; most were still nestled into their warm beds. Samantha had never been one for lying in, she liked being an early riser. Her mother drilled it into her from a young age. The early bird gets the worm, she always told her daughter, and Samantha had taken that rather seriously, usually rising before the sun did.

The girl had started her morning routine the same as always. She splashed some cold water onto her face to wake herself up before getting dressed. She pulled her hair back into a tight ponytail before grabbing a book and heading downstairs. She liked reading whenever she had any free time, if she wasn't busy playing chess, and right now she had at least two hours before her first class would start.

Samantha sat down at the long Ravenclaw table, placing the fantasy book she brought with her from London beside her. She loaded a heap of bacon onto her plate along with some toast and fried tomatoes. She sat with her back pin straight and started cutting into her toast, using her knife and fork. It was as if her mother was looking down at her table manners. She wasn't of course, but Samantha never dared to stray far from the rules that were set at home. Never forget your manners, she can hear her mother say with that same stern tone she always took on whenever she reminded Samantha that she was slouching or not using the correct table manners.

As Samantha was eating, she hadn't even seen the familiar face walk past her on her way to the Gryffindor table, simply too deep with her nose in her book as she chewed on some bacon.

It wasn’t the best time to wake up. With right hand on the bed, another one on her forehead, Rosaline slowly sat up. Rubbing her furrow brows, the young Gryffindor girl tried to lie back into her cozy warm quilt, yet her biological alarm didn’t let her sleep not even one more minute. The sun was still low, casting slanted light in the room. Her dormmates were all in their dreams, maybe sweet, maybe bitter, hopefully not nightmare. According to their smiling faces, she didn’t think those dreams were nightmarish at all. Hers was just plain and simple. But when she woke up the feeling quickly dissipated. Her stomach growled. She could only obey its demand and get out of her bed to change into the school robe. The crimson and gold crest on it wasn’t really her most familiar thing in the world. However, Rosaline was a well-adjusted kid, who wouldn’t be easily upset by it.

She tidied up her clothes and put her textbooks, notebooks, and parchment in her schoolbag. One of the parchments was loose, a little out of her schoolbag. It was her History of Magic homework, a lengthy essay she had poured her heart and effort into. Probably, the cause was her fatigue or the early morning dizziness that she didn’t notice. Her roommates were still asleep, so she had tried her best not to make any noise. Sneaking out from her dorm, Rosaline could see an empty common room, which was a rare sight. She yawned with her hand. Even though there wasn’t anyone in the room.

The way to the Great Hall was peaceful. The young Gryffindor didn’t face the dilemma like last time — lost in the castle because of the moving staircase. Into the Great Hall, she immediately smelled the aroma of the nice food made by Hogwarts kitchen staff. It was still quite early. Her stomach growled louder than last time. Face flushed a little, Rosaline observed around, luckily, no one was near her to hear that sound. The four tables looked so empty now. Though a girl sat at the Ravenclaw table who looked strangely familiar. She shook her head, probably a face she had seen during the sorting ceremony.

She made her way to the Gryffindor table. Her pace was fast since her empty stomach was protesting. As she walked, the loose parchment seemed to be on the brink of falling. Like Chekhov’s gun, when there was a sign, then there would be an outcome for it. It fell to the Ravenclaw long table while she strode forward. The parchment landed on the girl Rosaline had seen earlier. She reached her hand into her schoolbag, it was her habit, then noticed her homework was gone. Turning back to where she had walked by, Rosaline spotted it, just beside the girl. The Ravenclaw girl had flawless posture with a tight ponytail. That girl was eating her breakfast, and there was a book on the table. Rosaline didn’t want to bother her initially, so she just swiftly reached her hand to pick up the parchment. Yet as she got closer to the girl, she detected that the book beside the girl was a fantasy novel and definitely belonged to the Muggle World. The discovery intrigued her. Her fingers lingered on the parchment. She turned to face the girl, who was too concentrated on the fantastic novel world. To her surprise, it was a familiar face. “Excuse me, are you Samantha Jones?” Sha asked carefully with a soft voice. In case she messed up any memories since her brain wasn’t fully functioning so early in the morning. “I’m Rosaline Everhart. I believe we met before in London,” she added with a warm smile.

but please, don’t ask me who I am. A passionate, fragmentary girl, maybe?” ― Sylvia Plath
