Stemmie’s First Winter at Hogwarts!

Hi mum and dad
I just grew my first plant! I‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌ presume no one would really expect their closest companion to be a Mimbulus mimbletonia, but Stemmie (thats his name) quite rapidly made that decision for him to be me—and truthfully, I don’t mind it in the slightest. I brought one of his cuttings from a wizarding market before the start of the first year. The stallkeeper informed me that most people scare off by the poor things because they aren’t conventionally attractive, however, I thought the odd, knobbly texture made him look like a little sleeping creature waiting for someone to be.” All through the summer, he was perched on my windowsill at home, becoming a gentle, mossy green in the morning light. By the time school was to resume, he had grown two new blisters, both round and shiny like drops of dew. I took him to Hogwarts in a nice wool pouch that I had made myself—he quivers with delight when warm, which is the nearest thing a plant can be to purring, I guess.

He is now on the little table next to my bed in the Plant Palace. He is fond of the moisture there, and it seems he moves a little when the enchanted willow in the center, with its rustling branches, is as if they were talking in a language only plants understand. A few of my roommates don’t come too close—mainly because they are aware that Mimbulus mimbletonias can, well... 'react' in an unfriendly manner if startled. However, Stemmie has never aimed anyone unnecessarily. Most of the time he just smiles, soaking up the heat of the enchanted sun rays above.

I have come a long way with him and his journal is now my project where I jot down all his modifications: new blisters, changes in texture, and times when he seems to be more alive. The portrait of Professor Sprout on the opposite side looks like she agrees; sometimes her smile even broadens a bit when I am overly attentive to him.

I don’t know if most first years would bring with them a plant that they have grown on their own, but I’m certainly glad that I did. Hogwarts could be loud, busy, and overwhelming, however, Stemmie is a calming presence. It’s a sense of security that I have whenever he is here—amongst the roots, as well.

If I care for him well, maybe he’ll live long enough to see the years fly by. And truthfully? I like the idea that we might grow up ‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌together.
